Use bubblewrap!
In fact i found a site where you can make your own for free by using Plastics from a 5ltr bottle.

The best flash diffuser I've ever come across was called the Lightsphere (http://www.systeminsight.co.uk/Event_Photography_Lightsphere_Details_1.htm). It dropped about 3 stops of power but gave a wonderful light quality even when there was nothing to bounce it off. Not cheap either.
