What is the problem you are having? Just won't connect? Is it giving you any error messages?

What's your setup (router make / model), how is it all connected?

Any more information?

ok
when we run the test to set up live, the isp is comfirmed but then the dns fails.

its connected to a linkseys wireless router model befw1s4 by ethernet cables onto a portbable tv, it has no problems running games, just cant connect to live.

Do you have a PC connected through the same router? (I'm guessing the one your typing on now?).

If so, go to the xbox dashboard, network settings bit and see if you can manually set the DNS to the router's IP address, which will hopefully farm those requests out to the DNS the router has setup.

As well as what DaFoot has suggested, it's worth checking the Xbox is receiving an IP address / Subnet Mask and Default Gateway from the router (via DHCP). This can be found uder 'Edit Settings'.

The is assuming your router is dishing out IP's automatically...

I had ruled that out as the 360 appears to have connection of some sort to outside world, just can't resolve the live servers....

Also, AOL does not support online gaming if that is your ISP.

How do you access the router to change settings?

Do you use a web browser to access a control panel eg http://192.168.2.1/ ?

In the above example the router's IP address is 192.168.2.1

Start > run > cmd <enter> then type ipconfig in the black box.

The 'default gateway' will be the router address.

Curious, what did you change it to in the 360 dashboard?

you could try setting it all manually

assuming your router address is 192.168.1.1

ip address: 192.168.1.60 (or anything really as long as its not in use on another pc)
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (most likely but same as you get with ipconfig on pc)
defaulty gateway: 192.168.1.1

dns: 192.168.1.1

we changed it to the default gateway which was 82.47.194.1 as pc med suggested

Can I suggest it may be prudent to stick to DHCP for now? ;)

Save adding another layer of confusion. :D

That doesn't look like an internal LAN address to me. IP we want will probably start 192. or 10.

How do you change settings on the router when you need to?

Probably right DaFoot - it's never easy to sort these things 'over the air'.

If that's the default gateway that's showing up it sounds like there is no router in line. In which case, I am not sure how the 360 is connected up here ...

curious ... as you say!

How is the PC connected to the router? Wireless network?

I wonder if the router is handling connection types differently, ie not assigning IPs to wired connections or something silly like that. Would be an odd way to setup a router though....

Would be very odd - certainly not the default settings I wouldn't have thought. Equally, I wouldn't have thought the OP would set up the router that way - I can't think of any good reason why they should.

As the 360 is showing connected to the ISP (just not live), it seems it is gettings an IP address ...

A quick question - is this the first time LIVE is being set up? Has it ever worked before?

Rich: you can game on AOL - i do it currently and i get no lag whatsover, and it'd wireless too!

OP: Try resetting you Xbox 360 Network settings to factory default - dont worry, this wont wipe any game saves or anything...but it should make sure that the 360 is attemping to receive it's IP config automatically...

You could also set it up as a DMZ on the router...(can't tell you how though as i wouldn't know)

Can you confirm what connection your Xbox is conencting to? As i have a sneaking suspicion you're daisy chaining...?

Also, what ISP are you on?

If you don't live far away (I'm in Hillsborough), I don't mind popping over for a quick look.
*should be* a quick job to sort it.

Don't put your address on the public forum, use the PM system ;)
