Think , if you look at a street map you will find those pubs are in Pitsmoor, even Burngreave Cemetery is in Pitsmoor, some of the other pubs mentioned are more Woodside and Neepsend.

Just to complicate things, where the Crown now is or was, stood The Rutland Hotel, the original Crown was opposite the Gardeners Rest.

Hey painterman, putting Neepsend on one side, I was born on Fox Street. Lived there and on Woodside Lane. I always regarded Woodside Lane as Pitsmoor. I think Woodside has become a district in itself, didn't used to be though. It was a long thoroughfare was Woodside Lane. Where I lived it was regarded as Pitsmoor (top end).
It seems a shame that Woodside Lane has been disregarded in recent years, It's been there a long time.

As a matter of interest where would you draw the boundary line of Pitsmoor ? Would it include Nursery St for instance, and the Wicker ? I assume Spital Hill would be within, but it is really a continuation of The Wicker I would have thought. Whilst I am on, I used to have a pal on Woodfold, one Dave Blockley, and we used to do a fair bit of pushbiking round the area. Was there ever a take -away chinese chippie around the top of Woodside Lane in the mid 50's called Lin Hong or Chin Hong or is it my wonky memory playing tricks?

There could well have been, when i was a kid i remember going in a lorry with a couple of other kids Aaron White's daughter was driving, we went looking around the demolition site and i can remember finding a set of false teeth made of gold i can remember it being from some chinese place but can't remember if it was a chippie, can remember the scutch my mother gave me when i took the teeth home, she binned them :D
would have been somewhere near the bottom of Woodfold

I lived at the bottom of Wood Fold, where it joined Woodside Lane. I can't recall a Chinese Take away or anyone with Gold false teeth. But I'll ask my Mum, she'll remember. Fancy throwing away a set of Gold false teeth, they would have been worth a few bob.

I remember there was quite a lot of papers about with Chinese type writing on, so presumed it was a Chinese family who'd lived there, but it was quite a few years back and if it wasn't for the teeth i'd have probably never remembered.

I realize it's getting off subject, but I got to thinking about the Pitsmoor, boundaries. I think, to be fair, anything from Rugby Street down, could be regarded as Neepsend. Anything from the top of Cookswood Road would have to be Shirecliffe. Anything from the right hand side of Burngreave Road, Burngreave. Which leaves poor old Birley Street.

Back in 1972 I’d just started work at Thomas Rudd & Son which was on Woodfold earning the princely sum of $6.40 per week gross. The first pub I went in regularly was the Rock on Rock Street (the landlord turned a blind eye to pimply 16/17 olds on a quiet Wednesday night, provided you sat in the corner and behaved yourself)

Me and my mate Mark reckoned on needing 62p each for damn good night out. 13p a pint and 2 x 5p piece for the juke box gave us four pints each (more than enough at that age to get a wobble on as we walked home) and about 16 records of our choice. If we were feeling flush it was round to the white house chippy for a bit of supper.

The Gate at the Toll Bar, was that the pub next to the gas station? I always get mixed up with the names of that one and the pub opposite the old Pitsmoor school.
The pub at the Toll Bar had a parrot in a cage, anybody remember that? Couldn't half swear. And a guy who used to collect glasses, looked as if he'd been a boxer at one time.

Don't often see many blokes(or lasses) playing cards nowadays, when my Dad had The Manchester in the 50's nearly all the blokes in the dram played solo, brag etc, plus dominoes of course and it was usually for money, though small stakes it was illegal as was taking the bets on the gee-gees. What other games were played in the pubs then (darts of course)

In the 40's, 50's and 60's, Pitsmoor covered a large area, the border at that time was from around the toll gate [Barnsley Rd / Rutland road] to Carlisle st, and from Nursery st to just past Carwood Rd on Petre st, so the Hallcar, Corner Pin and Carwood were in Pitsmoor too.
The areas of Burngreave, Ellesmere and others were named sometime after 1970 after we left the area, we lived on the corner of Carwood Rd & Petre St, Which was Pitsmoor, Sheff 4 at the time, it's now evidently Ellesmere.

There was a landlord at the Manchester Hotel called Walt, he had a son called Ian.Cleaning the living quarters on a saturday was my job (for my spending money). After getting married we still went in there John was the first landlord I remember, after him came Peter and Janet Flynn, then Bob and Linda. Now its called the Harlequin. Had some good nights out there and they had a good football team

Alan Ward had it too, but I can't remember if it was before or after Pete Flynn.

The Buckenham Arms was on the next corner up, corner of Grimesthorpe road And Buckenham Road, my father took over the Buckenham in 1959 and we left in 1964, Charlie took over later.

I also have fond memories of Sid, Reeney's Dad. He was a great bloke, loved by all, young and old. I loved my afternoons in the tap room with Sid and his mates. Sorry to hear about Reeney.

Has anyone mentioned the Gower Arms on opposite corner to Grapes on Gower Street. We lived just above in a row of 'back to back' houses. Fronts faced onto Gower Street and the other house at the back faced into a yard, which was what we lived in. There were toilet blocks in the middle of the yard. The houses across the yard had access to Clun Street. We got rehoused in 1963 due to slum clearance.

Sorry, but that name doesn't ring a bell. I do remember a girl called Barbara Turner who lived further down Gower St, and there was a family called Moore lived in our yard but that's about all.

Dont know when yr talking about but my parents owned that pub in the very early 80's and they got rid of the crap. They sold it to Marstone brewery so dont know if it went down hill then. We had it totally refurbished and it looked good.
