Doing some IT contract work over the summer, and so have to be paid through an Umbrella company. Think I've got it all sorted (parasolit.co.uk). But wondering if anybody had any advice or tips about dealing with umbrella companys?

Oh, and before somebody makes the joke. Not, the kind that makes handy devices for keeping you dry in the rain

Well im with one at the moment. I have no gripes with this system as i tend to get a gud wage at the end of the week...

But there is one problem- you dont get paid when you want to take a holiday...

Just make sure they have your tax details right, or you'll get whacked with extra tax.

Also, you'll be paying Employer's NI as well as Employee's NI. I currently pay about 70 GBP of that each week, I think, with a final take home of around 650 a week after deductions from my contract work.

Make sure you take full advantage of the expenses you can claim. This saved my loads during my last contract. Your umbrella co. will be able to provide you with a list.

Remember that they may deduct holiday / sickness pay from your money. You have to ask them for it when you take a holiday, are sick or finish your contract. I was told this was down to a EU directive.

As far as i am aware, it is now illegal for companies to include your holiday pay in your wages. Take advice from ACAS or CAB before committing !!
