I was just re-reading the thread from the beginning of this year, which was started up as a result of the Jamie Oliver / Hugh FW programmes. At the time, i had a nightmare trying to buy organic chicken as sainsburys were constantly sold out and were having to source new suppliers. It's pretty much back to normal now but i wonder if that is due to new suppliers or if the demand has dropped as time has gone by.

If you were one of the ones who decided to stop buying cheap chicken and go free range / rspca freedom / organic, have you stuck to your decision or have you gone back to cheap chicken as the media frenzy has died down and the credit crunch has come in?

Not at the moment, we do not really get enough. One of my hens was so traumatised by her former life and was in such a sorry state when we got her that she rarley lays. when the other two arrive we may get a surplus of eggs, but they will probably get scrounged by the family. The eggs taste so good everyone wants to take a couple.

Hahaha! Because I'm one of those people who would hate them to be outside in the winter and bring them in for a warm.. Maybe even let them sleep in the front room at night! :hihi:

(like I did 3 years ago when I was looking after the next doors rabbit.. We had no bloody wardrobe left in the morning!)

:D:hihi: And I can tell you it's sooo tempting. Mine hang around outside the back door crying for me if I am in the house. Today we all dug up the potatoes together

I could'nt eat the stuff now, I used to be partial to kentucky but I can't eat that either. The thought of those suffering birds just makes me sick to the stomach

But even free-range chickens suffer in the end because they die.

Anyway, I'm going back to cheap Quorn because I can't find any organic stuff... :hihi:

same here..... we don't have as much chicken as we did... also we now on Hellman's mayo too instead of shops' own stuff as they use only free range eggs.... ( though Marks use free range as well).

I will still choose free range chicken, and I'd rather not have any chicken at all than eat intensively farmed stuff.

I'd buy free range and organic if I could afford it, sadly I can't.

I'd love some chucks in my garden but the council won't allow it

The farm shop near us sells free range chicken breast fillets at roughly the same price as Sainsburys non-free range.

i had tried free range previous to the Hugh Fearnly Witless-stall debarcle and found them very tasty and juicy indeed. The price doesn;t really worry me, just a few quid more for top quality. However the week after the telly programmes Waitrose were stocking about 98% free range, the rest being farm assured. The GM was chivying the staff saying get the shelves stocked with free range everywhere! However now you are lucky if you can find one free range chicken. It shows you how fickle even ethical supermarkets can be. The credit crunch is obviously influencing their offering. Nothing wrong with their farm assured by the way, they source very ethically.

Chicken or the free range?

True, but the point I was trying to make is that you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for free range, you just need to shop around a bit.

Which farm shop is this please? I'd be interested, thanks!

I only ever buy free range chicken now, I prefer the taste. A good while ago couldn't get any free range and wanted to do a chicken roast. I honestly didn't like it at all and I cooked it exactly the same as usual. It might just be that I got used to the taste? Or is it all in the mind? Who knows...

I grew up in a house where every penny was precious, so consider myself very fortunate that I do have the choice. Lets face it, if it was a choice between feeding your family or not, would you not buy it as well?? I'm sure I would

I've not eaten cheap chicken in ages, I don't care how poor I am, I'd rather eat something else and not eat chicken if I can't afford free range (or at least RSPCA approved) chicken.
