I downloaded the new messenger and it just won't work properly. I sign in and it loads up, then 1 second later it closes itself.

I've got rid of all detectable viruses and spyware, cleared my cache, tried re-installing... now i'm lost for ideas...

Has a previous version of Messenger worked on that machine?

yeh it has that's why im so confused.

Did you uninstall the previous version first? I've never used Messenger so have no idea exactly how it's meant to work.

I have installed newer versions of other programs before and the uninstaller has not removed all files so it still loads half the old version as well as the new one so none of it works. You sometimes have to complete the uninstall manually by deleting the folder and removing registry entries, not for the faint hearted!

Give Gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/) a try. It has a windows version and you can sign into MSN with it.
