I don't think nationality has much of a bearing, you should ask for references when employing anyone to do work for you anyway :) jl-heating 21-07-2008, 06:53 PM most of them cant read a tape measure, and sometimes they forget the damp course which also causes problems. :) if you get round the above it is usually to a good standard,(well the jobs i have seen have been) Strix 21-07-2008, 06:59 PM Mr Strix's track relaying machine is operated by a team of Poles - fantastic set of blokes, really strong work ethic, very handy too I'd be happy to employ Polish builders - if they had the necessary paperwork :suspect: mikomi 21-07-2008, 07:38 PM The problem I'm having i have regular tradesmen on my contracts but it seems that the so called credit crunch has made them a bit greedy, as they have put their rates up which to me is a bit stupid .I'm not going to pay what their asking for so i thought i might try Polish tradesmen if my regulars don't reconsider. Mac_Plas 22-07-2008, 02:18 PM with the polish mate, they dont understand the english way of building. for example health and safety, i have been on site when they had 240v cables running through the cellar, which was about 4 inches under water. i didn't see there work but they couldn't speak english which again in my eyes is not the best way to go (some1 falls or there is a fire) there was some russians and albanians there too. wmoham001 22-07-2008, 02:59 PM The problem I'm having i have regular tradesmen on my contracts but it seems that the so called credit crunch has made them a bit greedy, as they have put their rates up which to me is a bit stupid .I'm not going to pay what their asking for so i thought i might try Polish tradesmen if my regulars don't reconsider. I thought same as you mate and used some polish builders. How is wish i hadn't! Firstly, apart from the gang master, no one else could speak english, and he was rarely there. When he did turn up, he lied all the time, told me one thing and the workers something else. Basically, cut long story short, they messed up so badly that it cost me a fortunate to put everything right later by using competent local builders, on top of all the money i had to dish out on the first set of materials. Eventually i got so sick of them that i kicked them off the property using certain english words that i'm sure they were familiar with :hihi: mikomi 22-07-2008, 08:18 PM I thought same as you mate and used some polish builders. I agree. Its no wonder this country is in dire straits. The only polish labour I have employed has been 'fairly' competent and definately hard working. But they were being told what to do and when to do it (by us). No way would they have been able to do a skilled job on their own. For starters they couldn't read (and could barely speak) english, meaning that building regs and health and safety might as well have been double dutch to them! In adddition to the fact that they clearly didn't know what they were doing when it came to 'the tools'. I have to reply to your comments about British builders asking for too much money. Firstly my husband completed an apprenticehsip over 20ys ago, feeding his family on less than £90 a week, he has qualifications including an higher education diploma and deserves to be paid accordingly, However he earns less than half of what he worth and sometimes comes home with less than £300 per week, polish builders do not hold the same qualifications pay no tax and no insurance so can afford to work for less. My son has offered his services as a trainee bricklayer and skilled labourer for as little as 25 per day and nobody has offered him anything, ......... When Britain is refusing to pay you your pensions, because the economy is bankrupt,as you are all employing non-tax paying staff what will you do then .........................
