spooferman 21-07-2008, 12:58 salulition to stoping smoking
Don't buy any, don't borrow any. don't smoke any. sorted
Mrs H Solo 21-07-2008, 13:04 I stopped buying cigarettes when I returned to the UK from Germany in '93 (after commencing smoking in '71) as I couldnt afford them, but I still had the craving especially when I was out drinking, I used to have op's - probably 2 per night, and because I could no longer inhale as it made me dizzy and sick - so after a long eventually which lasted 18 months I finally smoked my last one and have not looked back since, except I have put on 2 stone and cannot shift it.
lukeowl1979 21-07-2008, 13:11 I gave up on July 4th last year - mainly because of the ban (even though I rarely frequented pubs). I suppose health was the main reason - I had smoked for 12 years and was a pretty heavy smoker. I do feel much better for it, my breathing is easier, I have lost the cough and haven't been as ill this year as I had been in previous years. My taste has improved, as has my sense of smell. I quit on my own (with the patience and support of those around me) and made use of the inhalors that you can buy from places like boots and the Nicotene gum. Above all else, I found it much easier than I thought I would.
Danny_Boy 21-07-2008, 13:20 Did you once smoke cigarette's but have now stopped the habit -
Yes
What caused you to stop?
Having a baby (not me personally my partner)
How long have you been now stopped?
Stopped for a year and a half started again for about 4 months and have been stopped about a year & a half again but this time the cravings are no where near as bad as the first time I stopped.
How much money do you think you have extra to spend now?
Between the 2 of us we smoked 40 a day so I would say about £70 per week better off.
Would you suggest to others that they stopped?
Only if they wanted to as otherwise they will never stop properly and always keep going back.
Do you still fancy smoking a cigarette?
Every now and again but its getting less and less with every week that goes by and I am sure that I have now completely kicked the habit.
Mr Doctor 21-07-2008, 13:57 - realised it was making me unfit
- wanted to do more exercise, and smoking was a direct obstacle in doing this
- was costing monies
- there'd have been the smoking ban within a year, and I didn't fancy being an outdoor smoker
- one of my friends was also considering giving up - to do so together seemed a good idea since we were the only 2 in our social group who smoked, so if we weren't encouraging each other all the time, it'd be easier
I've not smoked since New Year's Eve of 2006/7 (ie. 19 months ago). Overall, I smoked for about 2 years, and a little socially when I was younger. I'd drastically cut down before NYE, and become a social-smoker only. I then just quit cold turkey. I still occassionally fancy a cigarette, but in reality, I know that even second-hand smoke makes me cough a LOT, and makes me feel a bit sick, so I guess I never will again; thankfully.
I stopped because it killed my dad (not mine, his).
Buttercup80 21-07-2008, 14:20 I stopped 2nd January 2007 and haven't smoked one since. I had my first one when i was twelve and stopped at 26. When i stopped i was smoking 15-20 per day unless i went out drinking, in which case that would easily be doubled. I quit using Allen Carr's Easyway to stop smoking book and can highly recommend it. I know a few people who have done it that way after smoking heavily for years. I saved myself a lot of money but one of the reasons i stopped smoking was that i had moved out my parent's home and couldn't really afford it. I now spend the money on a mortgage which is a much better use of it.
I would recommed any smoker to stop but it's really none of my business what other people choose to do. None of my friends thought i would ever stop but i did, with very little fuss, so if i can then so can most others. I don't ever want to smoke, but occasionally have split seconds where i miss it.
Classic Rock 21-07-2008, 14:31 I didn't stop. I just never started.
Never ever smoked, never will.
If I HAD smoked, I'd have probably given up because of the expense!
I stopped when my granddaughter was born in 2005. Babies and smoke don't go.
SaxonLeigh 21-07-2008, 15:13 Did you once smoke cigarette's but have now stopped the habit
yes, started the day after my 17th birthday, 7 years ago.
What caused you to stop?
had quite bad anxiety problems which caused chest pains, at the time i blaimed the chest pains on smoking because every time i lit a cig i got chest pains. it was most likely that i had anxiety because i know smoking was really bad for me. i also had had enough of smoking, it tased disgusting.
How long have you ben now stopped?
i will have been stopped 10 months on the 29th of july
How much money do you think you have extra to spend now?
in just under 10 months i have saved £1168.57 (at last years cig prices).
Would you suggest to others that they stopped?
i would suport & encourage anyone who wants to stop to stop. i cant make anybody do anything they dont want.
Do you still fancy smoking a cigarette?
i cant really say that i do. i know some people who have been stopped for years that they still have cravings & occasionally get a slight urge to smoke. i cant say it feels like that for me, i'd say its more of a memory of what it was like when i smoked, i remember doing something & smoking while i was doing it. smoking isnt really something i miss so i cant say its something i fancy doing again. i can honestly say that quitting smoking has been the best thing i have ever done in my life. its most certainly wasnt the easiest thing to do but in a way it was really enjoyable & extreamly empowering. i did it all by myself CT, no patches, gum, lozenge etc & i did it for me, i now know that i can do anything i put my mind to.

That could be a "free" holiday, quite an incentive.
I am planning to stop in the next few days, not picked a date yet due to a few issues.
I only tried once before and lasted a day! (pathetic) I am normally such a mild mannered polite person but I turned into a monster for these 24 hours. I shouted at a lady in a shop, or rather raised my voice because she was a bit 'slow' and snapped at all my near and dear! This scares me, I don't want to lose all my friends and family! :help:
pinklady 21-07-2008, 18:17 Did you once smoke cigarette's but have now stopped the habit
Yep, started at 13 ..... was smoking 30 a day before i quit

There doesn't need to be an apostrophe in the word 'cigarettes''.

Did you once smoke cigarettes but have now stopped the habit?
yes on and off from 14 to 24, at the most 20-30 a day.
What caused you to stop?
Guilt, plus I stopped enjoying the taste, but found a worse replacement, which I have now quit too.
How long have you been now stopped?
About 8 years.
How much money do you think you have extra to spend now?
Can't really work it out
Would you suggest to others that they stopped?
Yes the smell is awful and it takes up a lot of your time! I also think it looks nasty. I wouldn't go up to people and say it though, if that's what you mean!
Do you still fancy smoking a cigarette?
Yes socially and I probably would if I enjoyed it at all but it just makes me feel ill. The idea of being a smoker like a used to be seems really bizarre.
koenigsinger 21-07-2008, 18:41 I started smoking aged 19, smoked until I was 34, then stopped for two years, fell off the wagon when things started going wrong between me and my ex, smoked then for another 18 months, nearly 2 years. Stopped last July after having to call an ambulance at 4 o clock in the morning because I was having chest pains and couldnt breathe, turned out to be another chest infection and pleurisy, and finally, the idiot button popped out and I stopped, no gum, no patches, just stopped. havent had one since, and dont fancy one, even when out with smokers
Can I just add to this thread, anybody who's thinking of quitting, get some Boots own brand NicAssist Lozengers.. Don't bother with the others, get those! They're fantastic! I think they're about £12 for 96 and last ages.
I've tried every brand out there and whereas most do work to a certain extent, the Boots ones never let me down.
For me, it completely took the craving off..
Eventually, you move onto lower mg lozengers (start off with the 2mg) and you should be off the ciggies within 3 or 4 months! All you do is suck a lozenge for about 2 mins, then place it into your gum. After 5 mins, suck it again and repeat until it's all gone (about 45 mins).
Brilliant they are!
for my health couldn't breath right it just slows you down, it was a weight for thirty years well shut of, made the decision and stuck to it, i cant believe i stunk like that love the smell of a cigarette but not the person that smells of ashtray terrible

How long have you been now stopped? Just over a week and he's doing quite well.

They were ludicrously expensive when compared to duty free tobacco. :hihi:
Smoked from 16 to 55 when I retired. Size of pension meant that £100+ a week on beer and fags was no longer an option. So drastically reduced ale consumption and gave up fags.

I sincerely hope that he can manage the next few days. He is then over the hump and with a good chance of stopping.
To take the taste away, I washed my mouth out by gargling salt water.

So do i, he's doing really well. I bought him some sour sweets the other day to try and take the taste away, seems to be doing the trick  He's become really grumpy though so i put that down to lack of cigs :hihi:
Did you once smoke cigarettes but have now stopped the habit?
Yes, started at 14 but did not smoke regularly until 18. Gave up at 24 for three years, Smoked menthols for one year then gave up again this Jan
What caused you to stop?
I don't know, jut something I decided to do before I reached 30.
How much money do you think you have extra to spend now?
I'm guessing at least £15 a week.
Would you suggest to others that they stopped?
Only if they want to, I don't think you can do it to please other people unless you want to really please them!
Do you still fancy smoking a cigarette?
Occassionally, tried to have one when drunk a month or so back and was nearly sick. Thats the reason when I started the second time I smoked menthols, I'd kind of brain washed myself to make the taste make me feel ill. The week before I gave up everytime I had one I imagined myelf being sick (which i hate) so it got to the point that I could not smoke.
Did you once smoke cigarettes but have now stopped the habit?
yes
What caused you to stop?
health and didn't want to stink of cigs any more
How long have you been now stopped?

Yes but I wouldn't nag them to do so

Anyone stopping smoking this week could easily afford a three weeks cruise on a liner with the money that they save at this time next year.
The holiday would not cost them anything.

This is true.
I booked myself a two week luxury holiday a few years ago based upon this premise and started smoking again 3 weeks later.
As a result, I'm now hooked on travel and have to go to Spain ( in between decent holidays) just to buy cheap cigs.

So this shows that you must always count the pounds saved in the bank, before starting to spend.

Nope. This shows that Cloudybay will always be profligate.
Bloomdido 25-07-2008, 22:45 I started recently after a year off. Hated being addicted again. I stopped when we moved house. Didn't want to tarnish the new place with nicotine. Was easy after the first few days and I don't miss them at all now.
dnairn8417 28-07-2008, 00:24 I smoke about 10 a day and have done for about 20 years. The last time I tried to stop I lasted 2 weeks, I did it with my husband and we fought constantly and I knew it was because we both wanted a cig.
I want to try and stop again. Maybe we can start a 'support thread' and all those who want to stop can support each other as it's not an easy thing to do.

Get a thread ' Going '. if it will help you. You will be pounds better off.
I did it and I use to go through forty or fifty a day. The ceiling above where I normally sit in my home, was light brown.
