Hi all
I am an overseas student studying in Sheffield U, and I am thinking bring some special gifts for friends and relatives when I go back to Taiwan this December. Is there any special local product which can represent Sheffiled or UK? Someone said "Hudson's Relish", hmm, it is special and not expensive, but carrying too many glass bottles in my luggage seems not a good idea. People said Sheffield is the city of steel, so maybe I can get some lovely spoons, forks or knifes from local stores? Any suggestion? Many thanks.

Most of the department stores in Sheffield sell cutlery made by Viners who are a very old Sheffield company.

Viners cutlery isn't made in Sheffield any more!

Try Sheffield Scene on Surrey Street by the Town Hall or Don Alexander on Ecclesall Road near the Berkeley Precinct.Don Alexander (http://www.sheffield-made.com/)

Or buy online at Made in Sheffield.com:
Made in Sheffield (http://www.sheffield-made.com/)

Is that the excellent "Sheffield Scene" shop on Surrey Street? Ziegler, you could get some top gifts in there....... In the past I've bought a "Made in Sheffield" t-shirt, coasters and postcards depicting local scenes, books on local history and local sport.

Well worth a visit!

Regards,

Spacehopper.

Cutlery is such a nice idea; however, since Sept 11th a lot of airlines have put restrictions on such things as knives. You don't want them to be confiscated at security. It all depends on who you fly with. You'd better check with the airlines before you buy something expensive. Also it's heavy carting all that stuff in your luggage. I guess you won't be mailing it being a student??
I like the Sheffield t-shirt idea. Maybe a mug or a book of local photos.

Sheffield has two football teams, you could get something based on one of them.

It's Henderson's Relish not Hudson's, and you don't have to carry bottles - They will send it almost anywhere in the world - I had a regular order for over 25 years. If you're in Sheffield, then you can order it in person at the 'factory' on Leavygreave Road (the tram stops within a short distance)

Interestingly, of the many Sheffield 'ex-pats', whom I've met over the years, it is one of the first topics of conversation.

Look up Arthur Price Cutlery of Sheffield inside House of Fraser, Meadowhall. You will find real Sheffield Cutlery. My wife works there, and will advise you.

Richardsons knives are made in Japan with Korean steel. They retain an office in Sheffield - hence Richardsons Sheffield.

The Viner family sold out years ago and the name has been used by various people. I think that the name is now owned by the American Oneida International. I'm not aware of any manufacture in Sheffield, but the name Viners of Sheffield Ltd lives on without any Sheffield manufacture, or even an office! They are just a marketing company that sells bought in knives with Viners of Sheffield stamped on them.

Sheffield is just a brand for mass produced foreign stuff these days. Some tiny specialists remain, but here are few cutlery firms left, and most of the tool firms have gone or are about to go.

And to cap it all... Bassetts is owned by Cadbury Schweppes.

Isn't Yorkshire tea made specially to be compatible with our soft water. It may not taste so good in other areas.

It's made for different waters for different parts of the country. You need to buy a blend for the sort of water "back home"

Bassetts may be owned by Cadbury Schweppes but they have always been made in sheffield and are therefore a sheffield product.

No they are not.
Richardsons knives are made in Lion Works, Russel Street, Sheffield.
I visited the factory a couple of weeks ago and they were making knives from Sheffield steel on presses and grinders made in Sheffield.
The only foreign connection is they are owned by McPhersons, an Australian group.

Now I would never have told him any of that, however true.

I wouldnt have wanted him to be disappointed after making such careful purchases.

Is that the difference between men and women?

Or the difference between bleeding hearts and normal people?

or what??

It's called truth.

Yes Carl it might be

But Tony did not have to make that post

He was not called upon to "tell the truth"

He wasnt challenged

He could have done what another 1800 members did and not comment

But interestingly he chose to "tell the truth"

I am asking, out of interest, why it is that he would do that whereas as I wouldnt dream of so doing.

I am curious about human nature, I thought you were too, or was I wrong and what you most enjoy is making cutting remarks in answer to various of my posts?

Nothing personal at all B – it was a statement, not an attack. And I agree with you, he didn't have to post it. Guess I am so appalled by the low level of honesty I've seen since I returned to England, and the misery caused by lies and deceit, whether by ‘white’ or any other type of lies. Again, this is in NO WAY personal B. I disagree with many of your points of view (and m’s), but I respect your right to do so, and I respect your integrity. I just believe, wholeheartedly (and through experience), that telling the truth (as far as one is aware of it), no matter what the consequences, IS the best policy – both in the long and short term.

I'm confused again. Where do you get TRUTH and is it a genuine Sheffield product or a cheap foreign import?

I email to the Richardson Sheffield
They confirmed the So.Eat Cutlery ranges were made in China
but designed in Sheffield

Well, I guess I would still bring them back as gifts
They looked indeed great

just wondering is everything made in China now?

Well i seem to have got the actual eastern country wrong - sorry.

Richardsons still trade on the name, but manufacture where it's cheapest.... like most people.

This is the trouble with Sheffield. It has its head up its rear trying to hark back to some misty eyed past that was in reality a tough place to be where people died young from cholera, typhoid, malnutrition and industrial accidents.

It's about time that we got real!!! Forget being 4th or 5th. Sheffield is way down the league tables when you look at real things like jobs, retail, investment and the like.

What this city needs is to get rid of 80 years of old labour attitudes and look to the future.

IMO what this city needs is to get rid of the people who constantly denigrate it. It's a great city built on industries which stretch back to the Roman era. Unfortunately, it was too dependant on those industries and now that the east is a serious competitor in most of our markets the city is suffering.

Fortunately, we have had far sighted leaders in the recent past who have given us major sporting facilities and a transport system which is held up as an example of modern thinking throughout the world. This despite the constant whingeing of people who seem not to have the city's interests at heart.

Lights blue touch paper and stands back.

Yup.... that's the Old Labour that permeates through every aspect of Sheffield. It doesn't matter who is ruling, Old Labour stays in charge.

The past is gone, finished, done, and we have to create new things. Creativity is stifled in this city. It can be summed up nicely with nearly all new public art - neatly summed up as knives forks and spoons nailed to gates ;)

Let's move on, get the politics out of progress, and make Sheffield somewhere to be proud of once again.
