hi all,

I've rung my insurance today to inform them i will be having a lodger as i've been told it's the right thing to do....

BUT

they won't insure me unless my policy changes to Standard cover only, they won't give me accidental damage....

i find this really unfair and why should i be penalised when it's my home!?!

As it's on tape i now have 7 days to find new insurance as they are cancelling mine....

I'm fuming, if i'd not said anything they would have been no the wiser

What have other people done in this situation, have you declared it to your insurance? What have you told them?

Getting someone in who isnt a releative increases the insurer's risk so although you may find it unfair, they've also got to think about their increased exposure to the risks involved which are understandable.

It's probably outside their underwriting criteria. Lots of companies want "normal" risks - ie 2 adults, 2.2 nippers, semi in nice neighbourhood. However, if you think they're being mean now, better you get out before they decline your potential home-wreaking claim due to 'non-disclosure' :suspect:.

I would try some other places - there will be plenty who do cover lodgers. I'm sure lots of people on here will have lodgers so maybe someone can recommend a company.

Another thing to consider is that if you have a mortgage I believe you are supposed to tell them too, as it is a change int he use of the property. I don't think this is likely to cause you any problems, but always worth checkign whatt he terms and conditions say!
