Sheffield will be commemorating the national fly-posting campaign organised by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy by producing a 'league table' of the city's worst offenders. Nearly 1,500 posters have been removed by Council staff over the last two weeks and, not surprisingly, most of the worst offenders were local night clubs and bars in the city centre.

Top of the 'league of shame' was the Fez Club with 555 posters promoting events at the club, followed by Phonetics with 282 posters and Takapuna with 217.

The table of posters collected advertising local venues between 26 September and 13 October was as follows:FEZ CLUB 555
PHONETICS 282
TAKAPUNA 217
ELEMENT 157
AQUA 119
BED 104
LEADMILL 55
GATECRASHER 43
THE ARCHES 42

Councillor Harry Harpham, the Council's Cabinet member for Streetscene commented: "I am really angry that we have to spend around £1,600 a week removing these illegal posters when this money could be used for other important services. We hope that by 'naming and shaming' the night clubs and bars featured on the posters they will control the promoters using their buildings to avoid illegal displays. If not, we will continue to prosecute."

New legislation under the Government's Anti-Social Behaviour Bill will give the Council the power to impose fixed-penalty notices on the clubs being promoted and it is hoped this will act as a deterrent to anyone fly-posting in future.

It's ironic that The Star is supporting the council's anti-fly posting campaign when they are one of the culprits. At either end of our road are posters attached to lamp posts advertising for Star deliverers. These have been there for some time now and have slumped down and look tatty.

Are they prosecuting for fly posting? Or is it that they haven't removed them AFTER the event?

Fly posting is illegal as far as I know, the fact they don't even removed them after the event just makes it even more cheeky.

Does that include tying the posters to boards and then to lamp posts?

I'm not sure if this is what you're talking about DaB, but I've seen a lot of clubs using these "sandwich" boards now instead of posters. The promoters are also including a message saying how it is an offense to remove the sandwich board... lol! If I worked for the council I would remove the board and put it in lost property - that way they could clame they thought someone dropped it and they were being helpful!

I'd like to know in which way moving them constitutes an 'offence'.

COUNCIL GETS ITS FIRST FLY-POSTING CONVICTION

The tough line taken by Sheffield Council on fly-posting has been supported by magistrates when a local club was fined £200 with £100 costs for illegally displaying advertising posters in the city centre. This is the first time ever that the Council have successfully prosecuted a club for fly-posting.

City Wild Limited, who operate the Fez and Po Na Na clubs in Charter Row, pleaded guilty to not removing illegally-displayed posters promoting the Fez Club when requested this summer. The company did not appear in court.

In October the Council produced a league of shame listing the events featured on the illegal posters collected around the city centre. The Fez Club topped that list of offenders. This initiative was intended to emphasise to venues and promoters that illegal fly-posting would not be condoned and action would be taken against persistent offenders.

Councillor Harry Harpham, the Council's Cabinet member for Streetscene commented: "We are very pleased for the support given by the courts for our strong line against fly-posting and hope this will act as a deterrent for other venues and individuals. We are determined to stamp out this illegal action and there will be more prosecutions to follow until it stops."

So a poster advertising a local event is illegal.

A bloody great advertising hoarding un-ethical instant coffee that's stuck in the middle of the pavement and labelled "JC Decau street furniture", which gets in your way when you're trying to walk down the street is legal.

Well hooray for corporate rule...
