View Full Version : Paypal Users Beware - Phishing Email
Just to warn all people with Paypal accounts - earlier I received an email supposedly from Paypal informing me that fraudulent activity was suspected on my account and to login using the link ASAP. However, the embedded link did not match the text in the email and when clicked the URL was not a proper Paypal URL. This made me know it was a hoax (along with the fact that the email address they sent it to isn't even registered with Paypal!). If you do login via the hoax page I suspect they will store your login details and clear out your account at a later stage, so don't do it. Always login via www.paypal.com and not by email links.
fredsredhat 22-04-2005, 19:36 thanks will keep an eye out.
Just to say, always log in via the home page yourself anyway. Never click on links in emails even if they appear to be legitimate at all times. Don't take the risk.
Had one of these myself a few days ago.
These things are getting so common that I just funnel all the Paypal mails coming to the mail address on this laptop in to my Spam bucket! Oddly enough, I never get any spam pretending to be from Paypal on the account that IS registered with Paypal.

Lindseyw 22-04-2005, 21:06 Cheers for that - I'll keep an eye out :)
Thanks to the moderator who changed the thread title from "fiching" to "fishing", however it turns out we're both wrong - the correct term is "phishing".
Draggletail 22-04-2005, 22:58 I understand that unless the paypal address has an 's' after http
i.e https:// It is likley to be bogus ( I think) :)
The additional 's' stands for 'security' (I think) :)
Don_Kiddick 22-04-2005, 23:05 just forward the whole thing without altering anything to
spoof@paypal.com & they'll trace & prosecute where appropriate

The full definition of HTTPS is : Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer, or HTTP over SSL
Full security page by the nice people at PayPal is here :

This was received after being told that the user was no longer registered. My collegues email was slightly different but basically said the same thing.
Don't know what the scam is exactly but all seems very dodgy to me !
I get these emails all the time, plus similar ones supposedly from various banks: Barclays, HSBC and numerous American banks that I never have and never will have an account with. All are deleted unopened.
the scam (posted by Lea) is probably that the postal order is forged. I did hear about some where your account would be credited and the forgery wasn't discovered until later, at which point you've already sent the item and the money is then removed from your account and returned to its rightful owner.
Oh I see. Thanks for that Cyclone.
We both reported it to ebay anyway so hopefully they will investigate.
I get these emails all the time... In fact aside from stupid adverts and idiot American drug companies trying to sell me Viagra, it's probably all I ever get on my Pipex email and quite a lot on my Wanadoo.
Phanerothyme 15-12-2005, 13:02 yep, just had a slew of these accross my accounts.
You must always remember that no legit bank credit agency or establishment will NEVER ask you to verify your security details.
I have had these type of phishing e-mails from what looked like Barclays, natwest, ebay and pay pal all I do is bounce them using mail washer. then do a through check with spybot and hijack this
