View Full Version : Removing things from the internet
craigmason 20-07-2008, 09:27 most people on here know my past history
now that i have changed i want find a job but i think that when employers google me and find it out i am missing out on jobs how do i remove my past history from the internet?
wow, umm, the only way of doing such is emailing the owners of the site(s) that hold the content and request removal, you will have to prove it is 'you' though.
but what employer would google someone? its actually against personal rights to do such.
rubydazzler 20-07-2008, 09:39 How can they google you to see what you've posted on various forums, if they don't know your usernames? Just googling someone randomly doesn't even mean it's them, especially if it's a fairly common name.
If you're not getting jobs, it could be for many different reasons. Maybe you don't have the requisite qualifications, experience or just don't interview well?
Best of luck with the jobhunting in the future. It's not easy getting a job after a period of unemployment.

The perils of using your actual name as your username. Maybe if you changed your username to something a bit more anonymous you will feel a bit more relaxed. I have known people on here change their user name so it is worth a try.
What makes you think that employers are googling your name?
I just goggled you m8 and you look fine to me - nothing there to put off any employer.
Good luck m8:thumbsup:

Apart from this (http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2005/12/329633.html?c=on), maybe?
seanpint 20-07-2008, 11:44 Hahaha thats brilliant! I hate racists, no need for it at all. If it is you and your not getting jobs because of it then I say its well deserved.
craigmason 20-07-2008, 12:19 I have not been involved with these racists for the past year as you will find out if you look on here .
the only bad comments come from indymedia and Joe Chapman so if you are involved with either i would be very grateful if you could get these removed for me and yes slh73 that is me when i was young and stupid and believed everything they said.

People make mistakes in their lives, and sometimes live to regret it. I remember craigmason made a full retraction and apology on here some time ago and said how much he regretted past comments and actions.
I think that's the mark of a brave person and he should be commended for it, not insulted and laughed at.
Also, big cheese, your comment, not very nice or mature is it? If you had a special needs person in your family, I don't think you'd be so quick with the flippant remarks.
... rant over ... and breathe .... :)

I have to agree - it takes a much bigger man to stand up and say I was wrong than it takes to make pointed comments on a forum.
Good luck with the job hunt however removing things from the internet is notoriously difficult as even if/when they have been removed by the host they can still be found for some considerable time in various search engine caches :(
I do remember that photograph and although it was correct at the time, as it is no longer the case you may be entitled to use the Data Protection Act to ask website owners to amend their records to reflect your current views including your full apology.
seanpint 20-07-2008, 13:46 Good lad :) Its nice to see that people can be brainwashed but then come out of it and say sorry :). Why not use the info you found out about them and work against it and help get rid of racist pigs like them?
...use the Data Protection Act to ask website owners to amend their records to reflect your current views including your full apology.
I'm not sure how the data protection act applies as its not his data. If the photo was freely taken and distributed, I don't see how they can later ask people to stop using it.
Still, you could refer the site admin to posts such as this and the apology they refer to above. If they are decent, I would expect them to adjust the text. If I was the site admin and my initial contact from you was a mouthful about the data protection act I might be less willing.

I love that picture - it looks like the Take That Reunion Tour 2035!
craigmason 21-07-2008, 10:12 I love that picture - it looks like the Take That Reunion Tour 2035!
I wish that picture would disappear down a black hole along with the people in it
shuwarrior51 21-07-2008, 10:43 Agree with (some of) the above sentiments.
"To err is human, to forgive divine"
Everyone makes mistakes but it takes humility and bravery to stand up and admit publicly you were wrong and offer apologies!
Best of luck.
but what employer would google someone? its actually against personal rights to do such.
Since when? Anyone can google anyone!? I don't get why you think it's against someone's rights for someone to search for them in google?
alkatraz 21-07-2008, 13:16 I think the intended meaning was that it is against the law to allow of a person's historical activities to cloud your judgement in suitability for a job as you must decide solely on the candidate's current suitability for a role.

Which is also incorrect.
It is a fact of modern life that Google is nobody's friend but to be fair to craigmason he really does seem to have turned the corner and moved on from his past.
I'd like to think that there is a responsible, reasonable employer out there who will give him the opportunity that he wants. Folk like craigmason very often end up as the best workers simply because they are committed to turning their life around and they have an incentive to work hard and impress.
Good luck Craig.

I'll second this Craig, good luck from me as well.
craigmason 21-07-2008, 17:44 can everybody with connections to the anti bnp lot get my details removed from the internet please
:help::help::help::help:
alkatraz 22-07-2008, 09:00 craigmason - had you not considered that this entire thread has now been indexed by google?
Teh internetz has you!

Probably not, hes now got the first 3 entries on page one..
Craig, i dont think its going to work getting stuff removed. I think even Bill 'walks like a girl' Gates would have trouble getting things removed of the internet.
Besides, if your up front with a prospective emplyer they are more likely to respect your honesty than punish a mistake..
johnbradley 23-07-2008, 07:32 Change your name by deed poll. Problem solved. Good luck. And once you've got a decent job then you can laugh at this picture like we do:)
craigmason 30-07-2008, 12:20 just got a very strange e-mail on this subject
it is however very difficult for ex-fascists to gain the trust of
anti-fascists, but not impossible. if we believe that people can't
change their ideas and behaviour through experience and struggle, we're
all wasting our time doing anything in the economic or political spheres.
i am also very reluctant to try to change history [erm... it's
happened]. you *were* a bnp supporter, you *did* go out [on the street
and on the internet] spreading the "word". i would be opposed therefore
to removing your picture or name, but i do have and alternate proposal.
write something for sheffield indymedia about being an ex-fascist and
post it on the newswire: what you thought and did then, what you think
and do now, what you advise someone who would think of joining them [or
their mates] etc, etc.
just saying "i'm not a fascist anymore" does *not* seem to be enough to
be. from my point of view, you need to do more than that: to actively
make ammends and help prevent the rise of fascism.
it would also be useful for us, if you're serious about cleaning up your
mess, to post comments on the offending articles. email this list when
you're done [with urls] and we can then promote those comments to give
them greater prominence.
i would be interested in your and other imcers' opinions on this.
what should i do?

indeed rubes i agree
obviously we cant all know fo shure if what craig says is teh truth and that he now accepts people for what they are........people (if theyre decent people theyre decent people, no matter the faith or race, colour etc)
BUT if he indeed has turned a corner.....just like roy stated at one point
fair play.
that piccy still makes me chuckle tho :P
craigmason 30-07-2008, 12:41 believe me i have well and truly turned the corner i now treat everybody i meet the same as paul mcartney said in his song ebony and ivory
We all know that people are the same where ever we go
btw what ever happened to roy?
melthebell 30-07-2008, 12:58 think he was banned for life?
i may be wrong but
craigmason 30-07-2008, 13:03 think he was banned for life?
i may be wrong but
good at least he will never be able to spread his racist attitude on here again
shuwarrior51 30-07-2008, 13:29 In regards to asking "what should you do?"
I'd do exactly as the mystery person has advised. Write a small article on how you got involved and what led you to get involved and then why you saw the error of your ways and a paragraph on discouragement and advice for anyone else.
One person changing their viewpoint is a good thing but the bigger focus should be on WHY people develop these attitudes int he first place. if you can help throw suggestions out there in a well written piece and offer advice to people who may themselves be sat on that fence feeling how you felt then that might go a long way!
craigmason 30-07-2008, 14:01 I am not very good at writing so i will post it on here so i can get peoples views so here go's
I started off my participation with the bnp thanks to a chap called Roy James who e-mailed me daily telling me how good this party was and how they stand for the everyday person and invited me to join him on demo's and also online in chat rooms thats how i got involved with the bnp and far right in general .
I eventually realised speaking to some people on the sheffield forum and reading online blogs how hurtful i had been to everybody online through no fault of there's.
But with encouragement from certain members of the sheffield forum who i cannot thank enough for all the help they have given me to turn that corner for good.
Now that i have turned the corner i can honestly say never get involved with the bnp as they are just a big load of bigots who are only looking out for themselves
right what do people think is there anything i should add /take away?
shuwarrior51 30-07-2008, 14:17 when you were approached by this Roy fella, how were you feeling? What situation did you find yourself in in life? How old were you (vaguely)?
I'm more interested in finding out how they prey on peope to gain followers as i believe eveyone is pure and cetain parts of society breed hatred and intolerance!
The_DADDY 30-07-2008, 14:26 good at least he will never be able to spread his racist attitude on here again
Comments like this make it look like your trying too hard matey..
Are you sure your 'change' is for real?
Here are some easy solutions to help you out craig.
Write emails to the admin of the site with your name and pic on and ask for the comment with your name on to be removed or doctored.
Secondly, you can flood it out, find websites that have higher ranked search results, and start using their forums, services etc etc, you can flood it back to page, 10, 20, 30.
The more googlable references to your name, the lower down the list the unpopular sites become.
Thirdly, set up the craig mason website and use it to improve your chances of employment.

already written to the site with my picture on but they don't seem interested in removing my details can you recommend some website's with higher ranked search results a website sounds like a good idea
right now shuwarrior51 i was about 30 when i first met roy i was very vulnerable as i don't get out much so have no friends so any chance of friendship i jump at that was my downfall nowadays i am very choosy about what websites i visit i only visit sites that chat about my hobbies (planes fishing and gardening and this one the rest of my time is spent playing pc games)
melthebell 30-07-2008, 16:53 pesonally id just forget it all exists and get on with posting on sites you enjoy, like already has been said.......itll all fall off the bottom after a while.
i mean ive posted tons..........loads more than you on 5,6,7 forums over the years and not that much appears on google tbh
ignore the political bigots craig.
If you aint got nothing good to contribute to this thread, please go forth and multiply elsewhere, this aint a topic on what craig has or has not done, it is a means to helping him, improve his situation.
Back to the point, personally craig, i'd set up my own website and give these people the true facts of your life, i.e. your hobbies etc. With future employment in mind.
I'd also flood out the stuff that was history with stuff that is relevant to Mr Mason today.
As for knowing which sites outrank which, afraid not. Never needed to do it myself.
But no doubt the more you surf and contribute the wider www community, the further back into history it will go.
craigmason 31-07-2008, 07:42 I do have a page on myspace
right everybody i just want to get my past mistakes in my life sorted out so if anybody has any outstanding issues /grudges let me know so we can sort it out and all move on .
alex3659 09-09-2009, 15:30 How have you done lately, have you managed to move on and get on with your life???
