View Full Version : When computer + knowledge = arrogance

Have computers created a new breed of arrogance and smugness. Computers are everywhere nowadays and it is becoming increasingly hard to find a household that does not have a PC.
I have noticed that computer knowledge, even in moderate amounts in the hands of some individuals can breed smugness and arrogance.
Arrogance never wins an argument, arrogance never contributes to debate. Arrogant people view themselves as intellectually superior; this is the basic tenet of being arrogant.
They never admit to their mistakes. They always know what’s best for other people and they revel in the blunders of others (on a forum this usually manifests itself as a reminder of your spelling or your grammatical errors).
Your request for help from an arrogant person will be met with a response that is worded in such a way it immediately makes you look idiotic and inferior instead of informing you in a civilised manner.
The arrogant person will be very conscious of how the world treats him; it is what fuels his smugness. He is the centre of his world, which can often be a symptom of a buried feeling of inferiority.
The only way he can value himself is by putting down those who surround him. When you ask an arrogant person a question they will never answer you the first time round, regardless of if they heard you perfectly, and they will always make you repeat the question again.
This is to show you how they cannot be bothered with answering your mundane, mortal earthly questions. Additionally, when they finally do answer the question, give a sigh and a slight wave of their hand.
This indicates how the question bores them and is inconsequential. They are intolerant and closed-minded. They also appear humourless.
One thing is for sure, they only play this role out when they have the benefit of protection i.e. they are remote to the debate to which they are "contributing" or they have cased the enviroment around them to make sure they can exercise their actions without being beaten to a pulp by a "commoner".
Arrogant people usually adopt a low profile in real world enviroments such as council estates, public houses (unless it specialises in real ale) on public transport and in fact anywhere they might be in earshot of a ruffian.
The biggest collection of arrogant people is to be found at any location holding a Linux seminar or user group.
I have found Linux users to have the highest proportion of arrogant minded individuals than any other group. Linux users will stand on tabletops (although only in a safe area) and shout with conviction about the benefits of using an operating system that requires endless maintenance due to a lack of drivers and an inept Kernel.
It is this requirement of at least an intermediate knowledge of computers that fuels their smugness.
Of course if you take the Linux user out of his normal enviroment i.e. the IT learning centre or the user group, he will immediately become passive and silent, even soiling his gusset as his fight/flight response kicks in.
You can spot them on the street all quivery and pale, pumping themselves up like cats as they approach a computer shop. They change from a flump to the fonz before your very eyes as they see an opening that will allow them to flex their smugness muscles.
No matter where they are it would be unadvisable to get into the Linux Lynux debate as the very pronunciation of the word can return a heated and incredibly boring response.

Is that better for you pedants.

Nothing wrong with being arrogant, got me where I am today...:suspect: ... just make sure you're good at whatever you're arrogant about.

And yeah, paragraphs would be nice.

I think computers have just introduced another source of 'experts' in our society. Some of these experts are arrogant, just as arrogance is found in other fields. The cliched surgeon Sir Lancelot Spratt in the old 'Doctor' films is a classic example of the genre in pre-computer times.

I started using 'small' computers about 22 years ago and have found that the arrogant expert has been with us all that time. I may even come over that way myself on occasion - you'd have to ask people around me! However, I have found that the least knowledgable people are often the ones with the biggest chip on the shoulder about things.

I've known three programmers over the ears who had truly phenomenal knowledge, and two of those were, shall we say, difficult to get on with. the third guy just didn't talk to people at all. :)

LMAO, :D I have witnessed this metamorphosis in said persons!! It never ceases to amaze me or rile me how arrogant and ill-mannered people can get with others (complete strangers, who neither deserve nor ask for it) when they have the shield of their pc and internet connection to hide behind.

But there are plenty of non-arrogant, helpful computer experts too - like several contributors to the Forum's Computer and Tech site I could mention

In my opinion, anyone who act's smug or arrogant about their computer knowledge is infact a Numpty

There is way too much knowledge out there for any 'one' person to think they know it all.
Thankfully we on the Sheffield Forum seem to have our fair share of computer 'literate' people who are not smug or arrogant (although i was accused of being arrogant the other day :hihi: )

I think the Sheffield Forum should be labelled a 'Safe Zone'

I have never had to "maintain my kernel" because it doesnt need it. It keeps running and running and running (unlike my windows computer which seems to require frequent reboots). Sure I have to install pacthed kernels when a security flaw is found, but this is trivial to do (run the update agent in red hat, tick the new kernel box, download, reboot and your away with no problems).

You can get drivers for almost anything in linux nowadays btw.

Anyway its each to their own. If you dont want to fiddle with computing type stuff then use windows. If you want to play games use windows.

If you want something that is more stable, but requires greater knowledge of computing to use, then use linux. If you dont want to pay large license fees for software then use linux.

etc etc. Both have pros and cons and different people need/want a different tool for the job.

and I have never met an arrogant linux user in my life.

A hatred of all things Microsoft.
An overwhelming urge to condemn, criticise and deride Bill Gates at every opportunity.
A denial that their operating system can or ever will be hacked or infected ever, either now or in the future at any point in time.
An obsession with astronomy.
A need to travel everywhere using public transport, specially the rail system.
An urge to carry everything in a small to medium sized rucksack.
Inferior social skills.
An unhealthy interest in real ale.
A burning desire to use a palm pc in public places, usually in conjunction with moccasins and a fleece jacket.
These are some of the traits I have observed in Linux users.

Without wanting to offend people who’s views differ from mine, and not wanting to disturb the sensitive nature of some of the forum users that may read this post, and striving to strike a happy medium so as not to upset the harmony of the forum or cause distress, particularly from users who prefer the Linux operating system as opposed to a Microsoft operating system I hereby state that the above list is merely a personal observation and not a defacto statement. I vehemently deny that by posting this I am surreptitiously or otherwise setting out on a course to arouse, wind up, invoke, incense, incite, rouse, infuriate, madden, enrage or annoy other posters and hereby distance myself from any actions that could be interpreted by others as anything other than a personal observation.
Edit: The above list does not of course include ALL Linux users. It is merely an observation from my perspective that this group simply contains a higher amount of smug arrogant people than any other I have encountered.

I have been involved professionally with computers since RAM was known as core, and when we ran a paper machine under auto pilot with only 16K available, before Mr. Microsoft himself said 640K ought to be enough for anyone. So if you feel arrogant I'd like to know why.
I enjoy helping the computer illiterate become proficient . I do not feel superior. On the contrary, I feel blessed with having these beautiful devices at my fingertips for so long.

yes there are security flaws, but they get fixed fast once found (unlike windows).

As a long time Linux user, I exhibit a few of the traits you mention... oh wait, I don't. However:

I do enjoy real ale, but I'm not obsessed.
I own a Palm M500, but so do a lot of people.
I have 2 cars (no buses for me) and no rucksack.
I use MS products daily.
I do own a fleece jacket (not really sure the point of that one)
I have a passing interest in astronomy I suppose
Like any competent computer user, I update security patches regularly
I have a healthy and broad social circle (mostly non-geek)

On the other hand, I know a fair few people who do meet these criteria. Of those, not many I would consider arrogant. In fact, some of the more arrogant ones adopt a more 'yuppy' style and these ale drinking types tend to stick with their particular group.

Spot on Views........................

One point not mentioned tho, which Linux is completley useless at is playing PC based Games....
By games i don't mean the crap that gets installed with the Linux, But 3D modern games....Unless you install a windows emulator.....

How about just install WINDOWS

Which gets me onto another not Hardware....
An as far has hardware is concerned have you seen SLI on linux, Erm i think not as support for new cards, is unheard of....

Linux does have some uses don't Get me wrong, it makes a great webserver, an its good for wardriving tools....
But as far as that i'm not really that bothered.
I use windows as linux does not cater for my needs...................

As a late starter with computers (never used one before 2000 when I started an unrelated college course), I found that by far the most arrogant of beasts is the young IT teacher.
Always implying that you are stupid with a capitol stu just because you don't know what they know.

Its not really a tyrade against arrogance, more a tyrade against Linux users.

I can imagine your one of these people that I regularly read posting to mailing lists. Usually with content like this:

Subject: URGENT - READ NOW!!!!111ONEFIVEELEVEN

Message:

I'v trying to install Linux on my puter and $item doesnt work?

I need help ASAP!!

I see these endless types of posts to mailing lists. Not only does it annoy people that there is no explanation, no detail. These people also genrenrally dont bother to search google, and genrally post to the wrong mailing list. The LKML must get at least 20-30 of these a day. Despite when signing up you get told the purpose of the list is not support. You wonder why some of them get arrogant when people cannot seem to think for themselves, or are incapable of reading the manual, or searching google. Would you be fine if people kept asking you questions that they could get from the book sat on their desk. I think not.

Games are getting to the point where developers are writing versions for Linux, every unreal game made works on Linux, I belive Doom 3 does also. Plus genrally, most of the servers hosting the online games are Linux. SLI works fine on Linux with the NVIDIA drivers.

There is nothing wrong with the Linux Kernel either, Just because it doesn't support some obscure piece of hardware does not mean its crap.

*Cough* Where did Microsoft steal the GUI idea from, they sure didn't think of it themselves *cough*

Linux can be run without a GUI for a server, or with one for a desktop. Where as you get GUI's on desktop and server with Windows, and you have to buy two separate products.

The one thing I do notice is that if someone gets wind that you do any sort of computing job that you must know everything about every aspect of computing. I'm a web developer, I do not know how to fix your broken PC.....I've discovered it's wise just to pretend you're an accountant or something ;)

But I do hate people who don't have enough knowledge to be arrogant that are arrogant about computers and will quite happily advise people INCORRECTLY on computing issues which they read a paragraph about somewhere in the net. That really grates on me....especially when I'm left to pick up the pieces of some bad advice given by these so called 'experts'.

Also why do people argue about Windows/Linux? I use Windows, I'm perfectly happy using Windows, Windows itself hasn't crashed on me for at least 3 years, individual applications very occasionally crash, big deal. I do not need to be told that linux is a much better operating system, I really couldn't care less. There are better TVs out there, better cars, better everything but I'm happy using what I use.
