Yeah, wonder why anyone would want to open one... some strange people about.
yeah i had a look at that strange graffiti....does anyone know what it's about? did anyone actually dare step inside? i stuck my head in and a pigeon set on giving me a heartattack flew up in my face!!
heard that they're making that church into a music school. i think restore it, we don't have enough large errie churches anymore.
also has anyone walked down cemetery road and looked into the cemetery just after the gates....there's a large branch which looks loads like the lockness monster!!
Carl_Malibu 21-04-2005, 11:23 I think its a passage from the bible, with every male word replaced with female
Theres also "haloween '91" scrawled next to the inside of the door
They have been "restoring" it for years, I very much doubt itll change.
sheff_minx 22-05-2005, 11:07 Sent shivers down my spine looking at those pics... makes me want to go and have a look myself though...
I lived from the age of eight [1949] until 1980 , mainly round the Ecclesall Road area and when we were kids a lot of our time was spent playing in the Porter Brook , where the Frog Walk bridge is , and in the lower peart of the General Cemetery.
In those days all the lower half was overgrown and neglected -----a paradise for little kids----dens , hide and seek , ropes swinging from trees......etc......Another way we used to get in , apart from the Cemetery Avenue entrance , was over the wall , near the bridge on Stalker Walk.
When we got a bit older we used to go in to smoke and be alone with the odd girl who'd put up with us . I remember there was a big building [forgotton what it was ] and underneath , round the back we found a way to get into a huge basement. One day , a copper , sort of pounced on us and asked what we were up to . We told him that if we'd seen him we could have easily got hidden. "In fact , " we said , "we could hide hundreds of men in here ." [!] . He probably thought we were potty.
Our biggest ambition at that time was to break into Eardly's Soft Drinks factory , just outside the cemetery gates but we never had the courage------or bottle ! Safer to stick to the cemetery !
melthebell 22-05-2005, 13:02 there was always rumours of satanists and rapists etc lurking in the undergrowth.
Any more pictures of Rhanno would be greatly appreciated!
( just joking - - before you send the boys around )

i am assuming that you have enhanced the photo to show the angel like figure?
these photos sent shivers down me! good though
There'll probably be some more photos on Friends of the General Cemetery (http://www.gencem.org)'s web site.
They are a local charity involved in restoration and other work in and around the General Cemetery, I used to do a bit of data inputting work for them myself up to about 2 years ago.
i remember when i was very younge venturing into the church before it had been bricked up, it was so cool. cant remember much now tho, not even the writing on the walls, looks interesting, although there are probably a few squatters in there now.
WallBuilder 22-05-2005, 14:07 http://photobucket.com/albums/v332/WALLBUILDER/
Four pics of the place showing the extent to which it is still overgrown, I may wander over there next week to ttry and get some pics of the buildings including the recently refurbished gate house.
Just in case anyone is interested the other two pics are of Akira a white Akita who I had the pleasure of looking after for several months, he'd be about five now and was rehomed through the council kennels at Grenoside and I'd love to know what happened to him, anybody know?
Plain Talker 22-05-2005, 14:39 Lovely photos, Wallbuilder! thank you for sharing those with us!
Me and my dog have had the most fantastic "walk" through/round the general cemetery, today.
the friends of the cem' organised a nature walk, to look at the different species of trees planted around the cemetery, and their significance/ symbolism in folklore and religion. He also described, how, in the 1830's when the cem' was opened, the area along the Porter was farmland, and grazing.
It was really fascinating. I learnt a lot.
I also had great pleasure birdspotting, as I pootled around the cem' on my chariot. I saw a jay, the very first one I had ever seen (or at least the first one I have ever recognised as such), and I was so amazed at how beautiful its plumage was.
It was so nice of the chap who gave up his time today to do so. His talk was great fun to attend. the weather was lovely, too.
It was a great pity that there were only Four of us; the leader of the walk, myself and a couple who came, plus two dogs (mine, and a beautiful cross-saluki bitch, that the couple who attended brought with them).
Afterwards, I and my dog took a stroll up Ecclesall Road, and called in Coffee Revolution, and shared a sandwich and a cuppa, before continuingour stroll along to Endcliffe Park, and towards Whiteley Woods.
I was disappointed on getting to Whiteley Woods to find that Yorkshire Water had blocked off the flat access into the park, and that the access was up the steep bank and my chariot sort of said "Naaahh! Don't fancy that much! (LOL)" so me and daft-dog tirned round and made our gentle way back.
I think I have tired him out! (bless!)
Still... it's been an absolutely fabulous day. We have really enjoyed it, I have enjoyed it, and the dog is a tremendously happy poodle, cos he's had a fabulous long walk.
Yaaay! :)
PT (and dog!)
I had a shed load of pictures from the cemetary which I took on my degree, must dig them out. WIll post a link if I find them,
WallBuilder 28-05-2005, 16:31 http://photobucket.com/albums/v332/WALLBUILDER/
I managed to amble over to the cemetary a couple of days ago and so have put another few pics up for people to have a look at. When you do wander round the place it is odd to see all the grand head stones and monoliths as you don't get this in most cemetaries.
Still awaiting news about Akira [see earlier post]
It is unlikely that the graves have been 'ransacked'. This is just what happens to heavy stonework in a poorly maintained cemetery. Graves naturally settle a little bit. If they aren't topped up with soil this tends to undermine the stonework which can lean or fall over.
The 'grass circle' is the site of the statue of James Montgomery which is now alongside the Cathedral. It was moved, I believe, because of fears of vandalism (from all those weirdos you see around there  )
Hugh in Walkley
Looked with great interest at the photos until I came across the swear word on the last photo. Didn't think it was required
Plain Talker 28-05-2005, 17:14 What swearword?
I couldn't see it, all I could see was a pic of a gorgeous akita type dog.
(puzzled, now!)
PT
The very last picture has a description saying 'view from the road' then 'pretty [swear word] ominous'. I got curious too!
Plain Talker 28-05-2005, 17:19 the very last picture is the second one of an akita dog, and ther is no swear word on there

Hmmmm your extremely sensitive, it must be nigh on impossible for you to watch television after the 9:00pm watershed.
Great pics Carl & Wallbuilder
WallBuilder 28-05-2005, 20:54 Who's trying to give me a heart attack? I thought for one horrible second that I'd inadvertently made some mindless spray can using yob famous.
Some of the bigger family graves were broken into by youths [I suppose] in the early 80's. The long curved 'wall' in one of the pics had 'doorways' in it were a lot of bodies moved from another site were re-interred. I can still remember walking past once and seeing how the stonework had been smashed and prised away with a scaffolding bar, the bar was still lying at the side. [the word sick comes to mind]
Henrietta 28-05-2005, 23:12 I used to live on Denham Road and spent many a post-club summer dawn in the Cemetery, watching the day come up. It was a beautiful serene kind of place.. much more like an overgrown park than a graveyard :) A lot of nature and hidden things to spot there. There are two laylines which cross, I believe next to the cleared open patch where there was a small circle of trees which got chopped down ? :suspect: Bit vague, that description! :|
I know this is slightly , "off topic " but when Henrietta mentioned , "Denham Road " , it got me thinking of that whole area , including the General Cemetery.
I loved [and still do ,in a way ] the whole network of streets in that district and how they've basically remained unchanged over the years.
For a long , long time we lived on Southgrove Road and then Wayland Road and I went to , "Pomona Street " school from 1949-1953. I've mentioned on this thread about , "froggy " , Stalker Walk and the Cemetery being our " playground.
Also , of course we used to play round all those streets and knew loads of people as people were more settled in the '50's.
We knew every inch of the district between Sharrowvale Road , Cemetery Road , Montague Street , Pear Street , Ecclesall Road and Hickmott Road. There were loads of places to hide and we always found something to do ------good or bad !
We went through the usual stage of tormenting the neighbours-----knocking on doors and running away , tying doors together and knocking on both , swopping washing round on washing lines , rolling dustbin lids down passages and walking or climbing from one end of a block to the other which you could do then as outside lavatories were all connected by a wall.Pretty harmless stuff by some standards.
The whole place holds very fond memories for me -----and I guess for lots of other , "exiles " and it's something that's still worth returning to visit Sheffield for !
Carl_Malibu 29-05-2005, 15:41 hmm apologies for the crass use of language.
Youth of today eh?!
*cough*
nice to see a thread of mine be brought up again.
Enjoy the pics!

I belive the general cemetery is now closed to new business.
Google maps says it in Norton. Its not, its in Sharrow.

From Ecclesalll Road, go down Cemetry Avenue. and the entrance is there, or from Cemetery Road, the entrance is opposite Grange Cres Road.
Go early in the morning if you want to see loads of rats.
K.
Carl_Malibu 24-08-2005, 10:03 the church has been holed up now
as has crookesmoore church
makes me think more people are watching this forum than you'd think...

K. Thanks for the map, ive been to the cemetry today and im surprised how beautiful some of the old grave stones etc are, they are really lovely the detail in some of them. Its a good walk round i was a bit disappointed as i couldnt find the grave for Mr George Bassett the sweet guy... id seen on the web where he lies etc ... i grew up at hillsborough in the shadow of Bassetts so i would have liked to find this little bit of history.
Not being nasty or anything.. but I really do find it a bit weird and creepy that people are nosying around graveyards with cameras taking pictures and such forth :)
Surely the occupants are entitled to a bit of peace eh?
LOL!
pete_fcs 28-08-2005, 23:09 here's two of mine from 1986, making the cemetery look like a sunshiny-happy place to go:

Is it just me or does the first one look like someone is standing behind the pillar on that plynth?
pete_fcs 28-08-2005, 23:54 glad you like 'em!:)

I have walked through the graveyard for years and have seen the vandals slowly destroying parts of it and so wanted some pics before the planners and developers got their hands on it and built more apartments. Luckily over the last year or so there seems to of been a lot of work done on maintenance so maybe the place will be safe from development.
I also like the way that unlike a modern cemetary there are lots of big imposing mnoliths and other unusual headstones.
Use to work down the road at Sheffield Twist Drill (now Greens) use to go for a walk through there at lunch times. Yes at the time it was very run down and stones had been moved from on the top of the tombs but now TFGC organised by Angus are doing a great job at putting things back to the way they should be.
roy_disco 12-01-2006, 08:31 i know this is an old thread but i've just found it and have a pic taken from inside the church i thought people might like to see.
it seems to be pagan graffiti in there rather than satanic.
http://www.idiolect.org.uk/~envioustime/galleries/urban/smalls/church.jpg
biggestdav 12-01-2006, 20:08 There used to be a small gap which you could see into the church (been cemented up now) but it was interesting to see all the feathers on the floor and the writing on the walls. Have you got any larger photos where you can completely read the writing?
