Anyone on Wanadoo 1MB connection in Sheffield and experiencing TERRIBLE service in the last few weeks. Dropped connections all the time and no service at all between 6 and 7 at night, and afterwards continual connection but ZERO net traffic. Thinking of changing, this is getting rediculous....

I'm in Stannington and they said we could only get 512k Wanadoo connection.. Cos we're too far away from the exchange at Wadsley Bridge, yet when I tried Plusnet's web site they said we could get 1 Mb... But Wanadoo were slightly cheaper for an uncapped service...

Plusnet have just changed all their packages

I'm still on one I like, but my mum may wind up tied to BT who have been dire for dial-up

Aye, BT's dial up is almost as bad as AOhell's... At least BT let you use your own browser and don't force you to use the annoyingly sh*te AOhell browser.

Just a shame their tech support department are completely retarded.

We've been on Plusnet for about a year now. We have never had any probs with downtime or lost connections - and we're pretty heavy users :-)

I am currently in STannington with this awful connection on 1mb with Wanadoo. they assured me it would be fine......before on just 512k it was great....but they wont let me downgrade it now...

Telewest are charging my mate penalty fees of £200+ cos she is moving house to an area that Telewest don't cover so cannot keep to her contract!!!! That sucks.... so in my opinion so does the company !!!

If they don't provide the service in that area that's their problem..... I cannot see how they can charge the fees???????

Anyone else had the same problem????

Thats appalling....

I asked them to down grade my bb speed to the cheap one
3 for £30.

They refused as it was for new clients only so I stopped paying. They disconnected me, I called up paid the bill and registered as a new customer.

Wayhaay.. 3 for £30!

20-04-2005, 20:33
Did they not chase you for outstanding fees then?????

I told my mate not to pay....but she doesn't want debt agencies involved etc

I think it is very wrong....if they not in the area to continue providing a service to a customer they shouldn't charge any fees they should forfeit them!!!!!!!

My opinion... I know but seems the fairest way all round!!

No, I just let the bills run up for a couple of months, they cut me off.

Once I paid the outstanding balance that was the end of it.

Which is why they let me register as a new customer.

What did the test show when they tested the line with BT ?
The lack of service issue between 6-7 is quite a common one but its not the wanadoo servers its actually the BT exchange as they are at peak capacity. But I bet you can't get BT to admit it - but there are ways of checking it on the web if you can get out via alternative methods.

yeah but she won't have the chance to register as a new customer if they not in the area at her new address!!!

You may have got away with it purely coz you re-joined....I cannot see them getting Debt Collecting agencies involved can you for a customer who has come back????

We got the 1mbWannado in the past week, and it's been ok, sort of. It randomly disconnects sometimes, but it seems to have calmed down doing that now. But I think it still disconnects when someone is on the phone and they hang up.

Apparently we couldn't get the full 1mb when it was Freeserve because we were too far away from the exchange but it doensn't tell us that now on the website, it says we can get up to 1mb. The connection is actually 1.1mb.

It's better than before, so I'm not complaining!

I'm in Netherthorpe (near Arts Tower) and I have an AOL 1mb connection. And it's awful.

I get the same problems as mentioned on here - random disconnections, terrible crackle on the line, disconnection when the phone rings.

It's currently raised as a fault with BT. Not terribly hopeful that they'll fix it!

Freedom2surf -excellent connection, fast, no problems, good customer support, cheap, no limit. What more can you ask for!
We're thinking of swapping to Bulldog though as it's about 2 pounds cheaper....

I have a supanet connection - been with them 2 years - rarely disconnects - no download limits - free helpline etc

I also pay for a 512 connection but it connects at 589 everytime....

Could upgrade to 1Mb or more but this is enough for me!!:hihi:

BT test showed 1mb was feasible but it might opnly run at about 750 max.....when it works though I get a good 900 KB no trouble at all.....WHEN it works that is.

Called up WANADOO and they told me to move my PC and modem right up close to the phone main socket.......I tried that and it make no difference at all. They were trying to tell me it was my fault I had an extension cable running off the main socket!!!!!!

I had a similar problem as the poor telewest customer charged £200. My housemate moved out and neglected to cancel/change the telewest contract that was in her name, consequently on tryin got change the name on the bill i have not been able to do anything (unless i pretend to be my housemate wheni phone) because i am not her. on finally convincing them i just wanted to change the name and nothing else they said it would be ok and i wouldn't need a new 1 year contract (i dont intend on being in my house another year) when the paper work arrived it told me i would be entering a new contract!!!!!
i phoned them and asked what the hell was going on and the person i spoke to was less than useless. i told them they'd be losing a customer as i dont want a new contract (as if i get one and move, the area i'll be moving to doesn't have cable and i'd have to pay the remainder of the contract while i'm not using it!!!!) they didn't want to do anything about it, so i've cancelled my direct debit to them and am now with BT! at least i can transfer the contract with them to wherever i move :)
grrr
rant over

I went through all this too with AOL:
plugged into main socket, new dsl filters, uninstalled and reinstalled AOL, uninstalled and reinstalled modem drivers, tried a new modem, ran full spyware and virus checks, tried with and without firewall/virus checker, ran a broadband patch for my modem, ran an AOL autofix.... and still no luck!

I've got a BT engineer coming tomorrow, so if it is a general line/exchange problem, maybe it will get sorted.

What is your contesion ratio?
My understanding is that there are lots of new cheap apparently quite high speed broadband deals at the moment, and I think wannadoo was mentioned.
You may have a 1Mb connection but may be sharing with 200 people. My mate was asked to have a look at his neighbour's new internet connection, which was sporadic, his fastest download was 3.5kb, it was much quicker on dial up. Turns out the deal he had was a complete rip off, designed to fleece unsuspecting users, who couldn't read, or understand, small print.

Don't listen to their tech support, they're almost as stupid as AOhell's.

We had all the "move the PC bang next to the phone line" crap as well, WTF?! As if we can shift a big desktop PC into the hallway FFS!

In any ADSL fault, you will be asked to test at the main wall socket, as this eliminates any of your other devices as a possible cause.

Also, should the ISP not be able to identify the fault, they would pass the fault to BTwholesale, who would dispatch an engineer if the fault is still not found, and he would do what you are doing, which is try the connection with a machine and a device in the main wall socket (BT engineers carry a laptop and modem)

So, most ISPs will ask you to test in this mannor.

I'm on wanadoo broadband at home and is left on all day as its f.t.p.ing photos from my webcam in Tinsley to the 244.org.uk website.

I've never experienced any problems apart from one day earlier this year.

At work I set up Plusnet and other companies too whom are happy with the service

Good point - but when BT turn up - where do they plug in ?

The Main socket hence the reason that its requested that you test from the main socket - if the BT engineer turns up and there's no fault and its just a duff extension cable - guess what you will receive the bill for the wasted visit - so its not that stupid is it?

What gets me is 90% of all faults seem to be the customers inability to follow basic, simple instructions or customers who's lift doesn't go to the top floor - hardly the operators fault if he or she is dealing with a typical numpty is it? The most common one is customers who plug in the modem to the pc - usb connector but forget to plug into the rj11 cable to the modem :)
and thats Wanadoo's fault for assuming that the customer may have one working brain cell.

BT did some kind of telephone test from their end and told me either my equipment was at fault or the ISP was to blame. They said everything was working perfectly up to my mains socket, so it was not their fault or problem.

....Wanadoo said it was BT problem and "this has nothing to so with us" so apparently it is all my fault and nothing works past my main phone socket....which is crazy as I am online now and able to receive crystal clear phone calls and make them as usual......

passing the buck..........yet again

Dont know what the Wanadoo contention ratio is.......I thought it used to be pretty good unless 200,000 people in Sheffield have suddenly signed up!!!!!

I'm on Wanadoo 512k connection now, at the moment it's working fine but I'd rather be on PlusNET's 1 Mb service, cos it's twice the connection speed for about 3 quid a month less money (for the capped service anyway, it's an extra 12 quid a month for unlimited, the Jury's still out on whether it's worth it though).

funny that you're all running to Plusnet - guess where the majority of Wanadoo's tech staff end up? Same place - same issues with BT however...

very strange, even since I complained to both WANADOO and BT about the awful service, the service has been 100% spot on.....co-incidence??? They must have done something to my line and not told me.......preferring instead to blame each other and not accept any responsibility.
