My Aunt use to take us to work with her at a nursery in the 50/60s, don't remember the name or street but it was a 45min walk down a side street from the top of west st.

Not much info i'm afraid, it was a great big old house with a stone wall around it, i'd even say it was a mansion at one time,it had a play house outside for the kids, big play ground out back, the rooms inside were enormous, big winding stair case.

would love to know the name of it, i spent many hours there with my aunt, she was a cleaner there, Lily was her name.

Did you mean 45 mins or 4-5 mins Poppins if it only took you 4 or 5 mins it could have been Notre Dame in Cavendish ST. That had a stone wall round it and a Nursery in the grounds. The description of the inside sounds very like it
If 45 mins I don't know of it.

Hazel it was at least a half hours walk, it was way down near the bottom ? i'll ask my sister if she can remember the name when i write to her, in fact it was almost like walking to the bottom of the moor but off a side street, it was a mansion to say the least, then again my being small back them maybe it just looked big to me.

it doesn't sound like Notre Dame (Cavendish Street) to me, which is only a couple of yards from West St. I was at school there from about 1958 and I don't remember there being a nursery in the grounds ever, it was a High School.

This sounds more like Broomhall Road Nursery, which is at 4 Broomhall Rd. Walking along West Steet, onto Glossop Road and then down Brunswick Street would be about a 20-30 minute walk from West Street ... depending on how fast your little legs could go ...

edit to say: it's a big victorian stone built detached house, with a stone wall around it ... playground in the front and large garden - set well back from the road.

AFAIK - As Far As I Know
IIRC - If I Remember/Recall Correctly
IMO - In My Opinion
IRL - In Real Life
TBH - To Be Honest
BTW - By The Way

I'm sure you already know most of them and I'm sure there are loads more .. but these are the ones most frequently used ...

Hi Ruby,
I went to Notre Dame in 1947 and in the corner of the big yard was the Montessori school where the preps were taught. As I was a scholarship girl annd was never a prep so I presumed it was a nursery. I used to be sent there occasionally with messages.

Hi Poppins
Broomhall Nursery is still there, now it's a 'family centre' which means it isn't a school any more, but a childcare centre from 8 am to 6pm. It's probably changed a lot, building alterations etc from when you knew it. In its heyday it was a centre of excellence for nursery education,

I never knew that about a nursery, Hazel ... the nursery building must have been what was the Domestic Science house when I was there. Down at the right hand side of the grounds, there was a two storey building and a big double entrance gate there I seem to remember? We used to go there for our cookery lessons with Mrs Barefoot.

I didn't go to school there, just went many times with my Aunty Lily she was a cleaner there, i thought the place was a bit scary as it was always empty when she went to clean, i use to go into the empty classrooms upstairs, i was even a bit afraid of the toys, every thing was too quite for my liking.

Most of the toys probably worth quite a bit now, lots of Golly Woggs, tin toys, trains ect, i'd be more interested in them now than i was back then.

I think you must be meaning Broom Hall itself. partly Tudor and partly Georgian ... the most wonderful house ... I worked in offices there once and the sight of it as I walked up the drive every morning was always a delight. It nearly fell into ruin at one time but was rescued and restored by David Mellors the silversmith and cutler. He used to display his work there before he moved out to Hathersage. It has a fantastic sundial on one of the outside walls in the really old part.

I also lived in Broomhall Lodge for a couple of years, which is actually in the grounds of the Broomhall Rd Nursery. My daughter was always sneaking through the fence during the holidays when the place was closed to play in the playground!

Notre Dame

I 'm not sure how long the "paid for" children lasted at Notre Dame Ruby but there was girls in my class whose parents were paying for the same education that I got.
And there were very small children there in a separate section. Yes bottom of the yard on the r hand side.
In those days I never knew what Montessori was, it was just a name the nuns said.

I have only recently moved and only occasionally use this bus service. The first time I used it, I asked the driver how much the fare was and he said £1.40. Each time I have used the service, I have paid £1.40 (until the fare increase) and never has this been questioned.

I boarded the bus at Manor Top and asked for a £1.50 fare as normal. When we got to Catcliffe the driver stopped at the bus stop and shouted at me to get off. I went towards the driver and explained to him that I normally paid £1.50 and that it was a genuine mistake, one that had come from a previous driver. He said I had to get off or pay again. I said I would not pay again, that I would give him my ticket for a new one that had £1.80 on the fare. He refused to do this, so I said I would not get off the bus. I sat down and he refused to drive, leaving a bus full of angry people wanting to get home. Surely he

My mum was deputy head of Broomhall Nursery in the seventies - I think the head she worked under was called Miss Packer. I got the impression she had been there for quite some time. She retired while mum was there but I don't recall the name of the new head who took over. Don't know if this is useful for anyone.

I went to the nursery on Shoreham Street, very early 50's. One day we had liver for lunch. Then put to bed for a sleep in the afternoon. When my mother came to collect me, I still had the liver stuffed in the side of my cheeks. Didn't like it.

there was a nursery on collegiate crescent, just of Ecclesall Road, that had a wall all the way round it.
