View Full Version : Wandsworth council, what do you think?

Compulsary micochipping of tenants dogs
I thought it was quite interesting and a step in the right direction, thoughts anyone?
I think it is a great idea.
"Earlier this month the RSPCA said the number of dog fights reported had risen 15-fold in four years, from 24 to 348"
That is a scarey comment though!
I think it's a good start too - make owners more responsible.
Plain Talker 17-07-2008, 13:22 The chap quoted in the article said it might be considered "Draconian"....
Nope, I don't think it is draconian, at all.
ANYTHING that encourages folk to be more responsible should be applauded. I also think iit's great that the council involved are doing it at no cost to the tenants, so there's no excuse for it not to be done. more power to their elbow!

I agree all dogs should be chipped , if i lost my dog i would want there to be as much protection as possible to help get him back. I denti chipping is a great way of doing this.
I once found a cat in woodseats , who was microchipped , with the help of the local vets her owners were found , she had been missing 3 months and although we were sad to see her go I was glad her owners were able to get her back.
pets@home 17-07-2008, 19:46 brill idea hope others follow suit ,but it ougt to be all dogs in the councils area ,& that responsabillity lies with the last registered owner to inform any changes of adress or they will still be accountable for anything to do with the dog .Any dog found un chipped to be siezed and put into pound / rescues where it will be chipped then rehomed. If you are a responsable dog owner this would cause you any problems. This along with a back to breeder scheme should go a long way towards easing the problem of abandond dogs. these are my views
helenasq 17-07-2008, 19:51 That is a great idea, then all stray dogs and cats could be traced back to the original owner, any cruelty cases could be dealt with a lot quicker and people could be fined for allowing their dog to stray or if they dumped them. It also offers peace of mind to the pet owner, and seen as it is free, there is no excuse for them not to have it done. This really is a step in the right direction!
I think this is a fab idea
there used to be a registration scheme in Sheffield whereby if your dog was on the register they'd be returned without charge. Now we have chipping and it's a heck of a lot easier for them to identify a dog, they have dropped this scheme and charge everybody the same
I'd like to see compulsory chipping linked to a nominal fee return scheme (say £5 or £10 for a chipped dog) but those who don't have chips to be penalised accordingly. Repeat offenders (say more than once in 6 months) also be 'fined'
I thought it was just me that thought it was a decent idea, on another site it has been blasted because its seen as a get at towards the council tenants.
If I lived on an estate with loads of these individuals roaming around with their dogs I would welcome any measure to make the area safer. Its the idiots on the end of the lead that want shooting
they're kicking off coz then they can't let their dogs out to roam with no come back, and can't dump them when they've had enough of them or can't pay vets fees - so can be prosecuted for abandonment ;)

I know! how very DARE they try and make these irresponsible dog owners actually take responsibility for their animals!

Shouldn't the council be microchipping their kids too then?

ROFL, lots of "wandering" kids round here could do with chipping!
Shouldn't the council be microchipping their kids too then?Don't get me started :D :hihi:
'oh, yeah officer. My name's John Smith'
BEEP
'no it isn't. Your chip says you're Ryan Jones'
SallyLaLaLa 19-07-2008, 06:25 I think it's a good idea but it should apply to all dogs in the borough rather than just council tenants as this kind of stigmatizes them by implying council tenants can't be trusted. To be fair though the population in Wandsworth is so transient it would be more or less impossible to enforce that so I guess it is a good start.

He is John. He's just looking after Ryan's chip while he robs Spar innit.

If it's in preference to a blanket ban on dog in council properties (which is becoming disturbingly common and I think should be against the law for all the benefits dogs bring to people) then I've no objection. I'm all for compulsory chipping of all dogs though - and a permanent record of their breeder to be included in the chip details
