The Heeley and District allotment society has produced a wiki (webiste/discussion forum). The website address is:

http://heeley-allotments.wikispaces.com/

Any comments and suggestions welcomed. The site has some info for new tenants and info on how to go about getting a plot for prospective tenants. There are still some pages that are not complete. Please feel free to use the discussion forum - anyone can post a messgae on it (actually I'll just check that).

This makes three allotment sites in Sheffield that I know have websites of some sort.

Didn't know about this one Rob. I'll add it to the list of Sheffield sites on our website.

I see on you wiki that you estimate there are more available plots than requested ones. I've looked at the site map and been down there a couple of times.
How come three-quarters of the site is derelict and yet the council's website says the site is full?

hi Captain Scarlet, I've got a lottie at Meersbrook - I think that it takes quite some time to evict people. LowCarbon recently did a survey of the site and gave the findings to the allotment office who were following up the plots that appeared to be unworked. I don't think the situation is helped by the fact that the allotment office is quite small and responsible for all of the Sheffield sites. Its worth joining the waiting list, I enquired around June time from memory and was given a plot by November of the same year.

I suppose there is a difference between an abandonned plot and an unworked plot. If the plot's rent's paid for (30 quid a year with water or something If I remember right) then I cna understand the allotment office doesn't reassign them.

MC is right. The eviction process does take a long time. The main problem though is with people appealing (I've twisted my ankle, my mum is in hospital so I couldn't get down etc.). Some of these are genuine and some are not but it's impossible to differentiate. So we either believe people or we don't. The allotment office is hoping to adopt some sort of 'three notices and you're out' regime but this has been talked about for nearly a year and we are no nearer to actually implementing it. I hate to have reached this conclusion but the Council really doesn't appear to care much about the allotments and all we get is talk. The group (including fed reps) that meets with councillors has no power - it is merely advisory. It's very frustrating for all of us.

We are trying to resolve the situation but as with anything to do with the Council there are processes and more processes. Maybe one day ...

Well with missus getting a job (thus more money) we are thinking of getting a plot in either Heeley or Nether Edge. Meersbrook allotments is a much bigger place and we know the area well but it isn't as close as the one on Archer Lane.
