You will have difficulty driving it end to end from Chicago to LA because some of it doesn't exist any more as I found out when driving part of it across Arizona where the road was a dead end near Flagstaff with the newish Interstate 40 running parallel.

There are books and maps available which give you ideas as to how to follow about 80% of the old route, I think it needs careful planning in advance.

Good luck, I wish I was doing it preferably on a Harley which I hate in this country but which seems the way Route 66 should be travelled.

very true, but in true period style I was planning on buying an old 70's Ford Torino like the guy in that movie who drove coast to coast trying to avoid chain burger bars and chain gas stations......not in a modern car NO WAY

Hia, I am so jealous about this! You will have a fabulous time!

As Darbees has said you may have some difficulty as much of it doesn't exist anymore. I've done some of it around the San Fran, Death Valley, Las Vegas area and it is wonderful.

Driving is easy in the US because most of the roads are long and straight and empty!

There are loads of books on it, but one thing I would say, is treat yourselves with a few really nice hotels in key cities, but for the rest of the nights just rock up to a super 8 or road side motel. They are not bad at all!

We are off to Minneapolis and Milwaukee in August and can't wait!

Me and my Brother did Route 66 about 15 years ago. As said before half of it aint there now. BUT we got an old map of the original route and then the O/S map for the current road system. We then planned a route that included all the main towns that the original route 66 passed through. we called it route 66.2 we had a great time. It is an idea to book some hotels in advance to you stick to a plan. We just ambled along and then near the end of the trip found that we had to speed up or we would miss our flight!!! Also DONT hire an old car!!!! Its' a bloody long way!!!! Hire a new car with a soft top!!! You then get all the bonus of breakdown cover etc!!! Have fun!!!
