Hi. I'm looking at studying at Hallam Uni from October and need somewhere to rent. I have two children (one will need a primary school, and one will need a nursery/daycare). I need to be able to get to the city centre campus easily, and my husband will need to get to the train station easily (by moped/bike).

We are used to a very quiet village where we are now. We like gardens, we need a garage (for said bikes), and off road parking.

The area around Charnock seems like it might suit. Has a supertram link, 3 bed semis, good (ish) schools etc. Am I missing something? It would be nice to have a local opinion (or two)

I loathe it, but that's beacause the ex-dragon lives there ........

Seriously, it's nice. Quiet, with people of an, er, 'above average age' in general, well served by public transport (the 51 will take you directly to the Hallam campus). There's no nearby secondary school for when the kids get older, but Charnock Hall Primary is good. There's a Foundation Unit at Valley Park school, but I'm not sure how many hours you could use, etc.

It's expensive though. Few properties are for sale, and even fewer to rent.

the nearest secondary school would probably be Birley, or (*trembles*) springs academy - (Myrtle Springs as was  )

ps, the supertram would take hubby directly to the train station.

My husband is from Charnock and my mother and father in law still live there. We almost bought there but we were outbid on the house we wanted. As said above it is slightly more expensive than areas surrounding it because it is that little more desirable.

I really like Charnock as it has easy access to Town but also easy access to some nice semi-rural areas around the Ford, Ridgeway and Eckington woods.

The primary schools and sunflowers nursery is meant to be good and Birley would be the closest secondary school I think - only a couple of stops on the supertram.

Magic. It looked like a good place. Thanks for all your replies. Will see if anything miraculously falls out of the sky for us in the way of rentals or a purchase. I hope all Sheffield people are as helpful as you lot! :hihi:

Exactly, which is why we started off teaching my eldest at home. Unfortunately a 'time of upheaval' occurred, and she ended up going to Westfield, as we couldn't get her into Meadowhead or Dronfield.

just a stone throw from Charnock there are a number of decent houses around Gleadless Common. Some are new build, others, like the one's on Durlstone Crescent area, are older but quite spacious, well built, most with garages and walking distance from the supertram stop. You'll find they are quite a bit cheaper than the ones on Charnock too, but it's a decent area and nice for families.

I've lived on Charnock for all of my 25 years and I haven't got a bad word to say about it. Its superbly located next to some very nice countryside which gives the perfect opportunity for walks down to Ridgeway and beyond. The residents are friendly and 'Geoffs' shop (the newsagents on Charnock) is very handy for essentials (and gossip if thats what takes your fancy - being an ex employee in my student days I got to know allsorts!)

There doesn't seem to be a major problem with rowdy teenagers in the evenings too as they tend to converge on nearby Gleadless Townend. I live on Charnock Dale Road which tends to get some passing traffic which sometimes can be well over the 30mph speed limit. May be worth considering if you have kids.

My brother is a little older and he has recently bought a house on the estate as he is of the same opinion as me. It has many of the characteristics of the S10/S11 estates (maybe not quite as nice!) but is considerably less expensive. Charnock Hall School is fine and the nearest secondary is Birley. I went to both of these schools. If I decide to stay in the UK and buy a house, Charnock will be high on my list of options.

Highly recommended

thanks to everyone for the help. I have been researching Sheffield thoroughly as it looked as if that is where I would be coming. Close but no cigar on the job, although its not a write-off yet. Fingers crossed.

In answer to Jeba, I'm a geography graduate. Looks like it might have done me some good when it comes to sussing out areas using just google maps and forums. :-). I seemed to have been pretty accuarate.
