Hi

I have a Fiat Punto (so is that even feasible??)
and i can't afford to spent a fortune and am only looking for a basic cd player - a single one'll do....

basic but not tinny!

I had a single disc JVC player fitted to my old Punto about three years ago; I took it to Charlie Brown's, and paid £99, and I was really happy with it. The guy there fitted it for me for free, and it took him about 2 minutes; there's some kind of tool they use to remove the old stereo and the new one plugged straight in!

Good Luck!

Halford and Argos both fit them for free if you spend over a certain amount like £100/£129 - but if you buy something cheaper only charge £39.99!!

Car CD players are on offer in Makro at present £39.99 (Ministry of Sound)!!

Personally, not originally beeing a car radio pro, I'd still try fitting it meself...
Took me 5 minutes when I put my new Sony X-Plod in me car over Easter :)

I know some insurance co are like, don't DIY, but 40 quid for a radio fitting, behave !

Almost all car stereo systems have a standard plug on the back, which means you can pull the old unit out, unplug it and pop the new unit straight back in.

We bought a Sony C.D player from Halfords around five years ago which we plugged in to the Vauxhall Cavilier we had at the time.

Then it plugged into the Xantia we had next but the steering wheel controls didn't work for the sound. but the stereo was fine.

Now its in the Ford Galaxy we have and again it was a straight swap.

The only trouble you might encounter is removing your old system. The hole you have to get to to insert the puller tool to remove it is sometime covered with little grubscrews but if you ask at Halfords they will show you whats what.

Once you've done one your laughing.

I'll agree with the other posters; unless you get one with free fitting, do it yourself. I got a single disc CD player from Maplins for £35. Does the job, and the fascia is removable so there is some security. Fitted straight into the Cavalier (now departed) and tonight I'll be fitting it to the Hyundai Accent.

The only car I've got difficulties with is my Polo (vintage 1986( because it came out before the standard connectors. It just has an array of about 7 different wires dangling behind the dash, and only 3 speakers (1 in the middle of the dash, and two in the back). Very odd...

If you have a portable cd player (walkman type thing) you can get a cassette that you stick into your tape deck and the wire into the headphone socket of your portable cd player and it plays the cd through your existing stereo. Maplins might sell them, else check Ebay or somewhere, they are very cheap and require no fitting.

Source sounds and security at chapeltown fit stereos and stuff. If you get a cd player from them they can put it in for you and it takes about 5 mins to do. They have all the tools to do the job, and they make a good job of it too.

neeeeeeeeeek, are these cassette thingies any good? They sell 'em in Argos pretty cheap, but they look to cheap to work (if you know what I mean?)

The proper CD players?

Or one with the cassette?

Where is there a Makro in Sheffield?

you are as well off buying a jvc one from Halfords and fitting it yourself, if you don't feel confident about fitting it yourself, if you bring your car over to me, i'll do it for you.... FREE !!! even if the exisiting wiring is a mess it should take no more than 30 mins :)

It is on Parkway Avenue and you need a trade card to shop there.

Feargal - I use a portable CD player which I plug into the tape deck in the car. It's a Sony D-NE518CK. It's actually sold as "Car-ready" and came with the requisite leads and connections. I've used it for about a year and have no complaints at all. It helps if you have a passenger to act as as assistant though.

They actually work quite well. a friend uses one because he can't be bothered to remove the standard stereo from his car. better than getting a cheap car cd player with no removable front as some scally will probably just steal it!

Oooh, I might try that then - thanks very much. My friends will be pleased that I am moving into the modern age!

I recently bought one online, a lovely Kenwood cd/cd-r/mp3 player. Plays cd's and cd's full of mp3's.

You just need the unit itself AND a converter / adapter type thing that will convert the plug in your car (in dashboard where your cd player goes) to the plug in your new cd player.

Easy to install yourself (well, I found it easy).

Good luck
