View Full Version : Rio Ferdinand - stalling over new deal
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/4459115.stm
This kind of behaviour from greedy football players is really starting to get me annoyed.
I think greedy Ferdinand is messing Man Utd about, this is the club who has supported him during drug suspension. His agent has now turned round and said that Man Utd should consider offering him a deal appropriate for the best defender in the world. There is also amid allegations os tap up meeting with Chelsea, I think all this is bull just to try and bump up the price.
I expect him to sign but I hope it all blows up in his face.

Decent footballer, I would love to see him leave Manchester.
I think they should offer a contract to the best defender in the world.. But I don't think Rio 'Ooops I forgot' Ferdinand is it
Ferdinand is playing a dangerous game with Alex Ferguson here.
If Ferdinand or his agent think he's the best defender in the world, then all the more reason for Ferguson to get rid of him.
Like it or not, Ferguson has made Man Utd Plc Ltd .com a success by keeping some grip on his Prima Donnas-, er the players.
If Ferdinand is making demands / threats like this or id generally becoming too much of a headache, then I would not be surprised to see Ferguson boot the player out, regardless of his reputation.
Ferguson did it to Japp Stam and Beckham before.
Agent Gypo 22-04-2005, 12:18 I hope Chelsea buy him, just to **** Ferguson off more than anything else really.
And then Ferguson can tell everyone he was never that good really and Wes Brown is better. Probably.
Ousetunes 23-04-2005, 12:49 Offer him £450 a week. Best defender in the world? Wasn't that Duncan Ferguson - a Scot - who beat him to the ball at Everton last week?
I'd show the t*at the door - if he can find it.
he's always been a prat
im a west ham fan and 18 million was very welcome. i cant stand arrogant players and yes he is a class player..but what a prat :)
Agent Gypo 24-04-2005, 08:59 Rio Ferdinand is a world class defender, and every team in the world would want him.

If Rio goes from MU then Im affraid its goodnight from me also.
I will not standby and watch MU turn into a selling club.
Three strikes and Im out.
Selling Jaap Stam was a big loss, selling Beckham was taking the **** out of the fans.. but if Rio goes.... no thanks.
Another development today in the ongoing Ferdinand story. It seems that he lost his rag with the boo boys during today's defeat to Koshima Antlers. Ferdinand apparently stuck two fingers up at the fans who were booing and then Ferdinand was apparently involved in a bust-up with Nistelrooy after the final whistle.
Looks like moral is not so good at Man Utd coming up to the start of the new season.
he is so overrated. They should just flog him for silly money and get rid of him. Nothing but trouble
how can a player not take 100,000 a week salary? and 1 of the best clubs in the world... come on rio!!
One of the most over-rated players - and I think him refusing £100k a week just goes to show what Man Utd (and unfortunately most footballers) are about these days.
Maybe he meant to sign the contract.... but he forgot and left without signing it? :hihi:
Im with Rio giving the fans a friendly wave or two to shut them up!
Good on him I say... the supposed fans are the ones who are shoving him out the door.. and when it backfires on us this season if he goes, I will be holding them responsible.
If Rio goes.. our backline is fooked good and proper.
Fergie made the ballsup of letting stam go- who also was world class, we cant afford to let Rio go either.
Pay him £120k a week, real madrid would, so should we to keep him at MU.
Guderian 04-08-2005, 12:16 Speaking as a season ticket holder at United, I say kick the t**t out of OT. He makes me sick. Class defender and all that, but his arrogance stuns me. We stood by him and forgave him for actions over the drugs test that never was.
Rather than repay that (and the fact he recd 8 months pay for nithing) by pledging his undying loyalty to us, he spits in our face. Get rid. If he doesnt sign by the opening day of the season the fans will make his life a misery at the opening games.
And we have a very promising young Spanish centre half named Gerard Pique, who, whilst young, is quite similar in style to Rio. This could be his chance.
Not a big fan of Man U, but quite frankly this stinks.
Football players need to take a serious look at what they are doing to our game. Gone are the days of role-models who kids can look up to - the type of players that are loyal to a club no matter what.
They are mostly very greedy people with little value for anything apart from money.

Yeah I agree. I can't believe he has been offered £100k a WEEK nevermind him wanting an extra £20k a week. Absolute greed.
No one is worth that amount of money.

Im sorry to say I have to disagree with you there fella.
Kicking Rio out of OT will not help us, and if you are one of the people booing him, I suggest you stop it along with the rest of you so called 'hardcore fans'.. we cant afford to lose another world class defender like him, look at the **** fergie left us in when stam went.
And if he does go, I hope you all who booed him dont get on Glaziers back about it, because I for one will be laying the blame squarely on the head of our so called 'hardcore fans' for ****ing us right up.
Pique is decent though I'll admit that- but he is not nearly ready yet for premiership.
If you want us to be great again- get off Rio's back.
What would you do if he goes to chelski?
was the movement of phil neville a surprise to any man u fans?
shocked me really.
I am quite happy that Phil is leaving to be honest and also I will be very happy when he takes Kleberson along with him.
I still reckon fergie is after another midfielder before the beginning of the season and I reckon its between Ballack and Essien hopefully.

What a great signing for Everton. David Moyes is a shrewd operator.
Guderian 04-08-2005, 22:57 If Rio goes I wont be that sorry. I would rather support a team with principles. And if we stood up to Rio we it might send a message out to other greedy players.
Anyway -set your clock pal. If he hasnt signed by the opening game then I (along with hundreds of others) will be hammering him at Goodison. No doubt about that.
Sir Matt would turn in his grave at his behaviour.
P.S Werent you the guy that said you would "give up on United if we became a selling club"?
Hmmm - think Chelsea beckons for you as well as Rio.

You are obviously the p**s big style with this post aren't you? If you're not are we talking about the same Phil Neville? Your post should have read what a great bit of business by Alex Ferguson and Man U selling Phil Neville to Everton who have been happy to take all their rejects over the years!

Dispite the stigma attached to Phil Neville, he is a quality player.
He will provide us with a good holding midfield player whilst also providing great cover for left and right back - positions we are thin on. He has over 50 England caps and has huge Champions League experience.
He is a great professional and will fit in well with the attitude we currently have with Moysey at the helm. All in all a great signing for £3m - he is 28 but how many players with over 50 caps at 28 will go for less than £3m?
We do need a couple more before the start of the season - a striker (Robbie Keane) and a creative midfielder.

Sorry to say fella, that if Rio goes, you the fans will be held accountable, not Malcolm Glazier- remember that.
I did say I would give up on United if any of our world class players leave, especially Rio, Ruud, Rooney or Ronaldo.
Any of them leave, and Utd dont make a decent effort to keep them, then sorry.. we are going down the ****pipe fast and I'm not tagging along.
After being a fan for more than 25 years, the last couple of seasons have to be fair, sickened me, through wrong managerial decisions to the ****e buys we have accumulated.
If Rio goes, so does any chance we can beat chelski to that title.
Period.

We'll wait to see if you're right, if you'd have said his brother was coming that would have been fine but Phil has made too many blunders in mine and Alex Ferguson's opinion-that's why he's been sold.
I like Keane but he's hardly done the business where he's been, I can't believe we didn't go for Darius Vassel from Villa.Man City got him and at 2m I think he was cheap!
Just realised getting a bit off thread here,so here goes...... Ferdinand get rid of him he's holding the club to ransom, no player is bigger than the club, there!
Guderian 05-08-2005, 12:07 Fan for 25 years with that attitude? I fail to see how you could have coped with Ralph Milne, Colin Gibson, and the like, not to mention 26 years without a title.
Glory boy it seems!
P.S Hope Rio goes.
Nope, I'm not a glory fan and neither am I one to say boot out Malcolm Glazier as well.
I have been brought up as a MU fan, born and bred.
How about you? Can you say the same?
Rio going- how will this help us in our current state, please explain because I must be missing something in my warped sense of mind???
I know lets let ronaldo go as well.. he's not signed a new contract yet and a lot of clubs are looking his way.. lets let him go off as well.. see where that gets us.
It amazes me sometimes about the thinking behind some of our 'loyal' fans or sheep as I call them.
They dont seem to have an idea themselves, they just follow about in herds following merrily along with the other so called 'hardcore' fans.
Next you will be telling me fergie does not deserve to be sacked this season if he does not win anything?
Guderian 05-08-2005, 12:27 You may be a United fan, but you are not a "Red".
Your last point about Ferguson being sacked leaves me staggered and unwilling to further this discussion.
End of debate.
AH! I knew it... aww come on, its a good debate this.
Why stop now? And please dont be offended by anything I say.
Just a bit of banter.. thats all it is.
What do you class as being a red though?
And if Fergie does not win the title this season, I really am not sure whether he can still do the job.
He cocked up a lot last season, what with tactically indecisions and also rubbish buys as well- dont you agree?
Guderian 05-08-2005, 12:36 Of course, but you dont sack someone like Ferguson. Perhaps Gill could have a word in his ear, or move him "upstairs", but to sack him would humiliate a man who has dedicated most of his working life to United.
No, I dont understand Kleberson and Djemba Djemba either, but if he can still unearth talent like Ronaldo then he still has something in the tank.
I'd stick him upstairs, we could do with someone keeping an eye on things if a new manager comes in to the club.
Kleb and Djemba- both were rubbish unfortunately but Ronaldo... big big signing for us.
I dont know if you heard this but when we played against Sporting Lisbon in a friendly- we lost I think it was 3-1 and Ronaldo played a blinder against us- our players went back into the dressing room and told fergie to sign Ronaldo.
Which worked out nice for us- because we have a link up with Sporting.. and now we have one with Fluminese in Brazil.. fantastic news for us.
2 of their kids are already coming over to us, and I've heard of one of them before Artur- who is supposedly a really fantastic young player.. fingers crossed!
Guderian 05-08-2005, 12:46 I had heard that. But Fergie had already made an agreement with Lisbon that we were to sign Ronaldo, but not until the season after. After he had run rings round Gary Neville the players demanded the signing be brought forward!
Lucky for us it was.
I am still undecided about this "feeder club" business. I can understand the Antwerp deal in terms of blooding our players (Ronnie Wallwork was over there until sent off for strangling a ref) and getting EU permits for that Dong fella. But we can hardly send youngsters to Brazil can we?
And young Brazilians might struggle in the Manchester weather!
But I suppose if it gives us a chance of breaking up Real Madrids monopoly of young Brazilian talent then it might be a good thing.

I hardly think he 'unearthed' Ronaldo, he was on many clubs list. Liverpool actually made the first overtures to him, if memory serves.
I would also be concerned about the stranglehold Ferguson seems to have at OT. Great manager, in the past.
I do think he's getting towards the end of his shelf-life as manager though, and think you really should be grooming his succesor.
Quieroz(?) isn't up to the job IMO - nothing to do with his stint at Madrid.

From the rumours going round at the minute a lot of the senior players are not happy with some of the techniques he has in training and other coaching methods.

Maybe it would be good to send a few of our younger players out to brazil to learn a bit more- I cant see why they couldnt send some kids over there? You might be right though about the brazilians and our manchester weather though!

LOL! :)
It would be good to train them up brazilian stylie I reckon.
Guderian 08-08-2005, 12:37 Angelus - just for you - a excerpt taken from the BBC 606 United Messageboard.
" I appeal to all Man Utd fans, who are sick to death of having multi-millionares hold the team they love to ransom, to continue to boo him with every last drop of energy.
In some reports I have read that the money saved by P. Neville's wages will enable Man Utd finance the Rio deal. Although not necessarily the truth, this thought is sickening. To me this is selling one of our most loyal players to finance a mercenary.
Even should this not be the case, I feel Rio’s behaviour is inappropriate given that Man Utd went above and beyond the call of duty by paying him during his self-imposed ban.
If he plays tomorrow, his valuation on the transfer market would drop significantly. I hope we sell him at all costs. I have been a Man Utd fan for some 20 odd years and I’d rather see our team disimprove in the short-term in order to set a precedence against such mercenaries.
I know many fellow fans reckon he is the best in the world in his position. Although I disagree, even were I to agree, I’d still stand by my comments in the paragraph above.
We should know within 24 hours whether an end is in sight (ie if he starts tomorrow or not). "

After thinking about this situation, I have come to the conclusion that NO PLAYER is bigger than the club, and NO CLUB can afford to give any player the impression that he is.
I would offer to drive him to the airport if I were a Man U fan. He is an absolute disgrace for holding the club to ransom, and a message needs to be sent.
I think this is possibily indicative of Ferguson losing his bite. Five or six years ago, Rio would be out on his backside, and rightly so. I also think there may be a lingering doubt in Ferguson's mind about the strength of support he will be offered by the Glazer's in the transfer market.
The combination of these two factors, is, I believe, the reason for Ferguson's pandering to Rio.
I also think the Phil Neville deal was, at it's heart, unrelated to the finance of Rio's new deal - you cannot refuse £3.5Million for someone who is, at best, a fringe player. Undoubtedly, the money from the deal will be recycled into the Rio's new deal (if he stays).
As a side issue, relating again to the Neville deal, does anyone else thing it is a strange coincidence that the deal was done shortly after the next installment of the Rooney deal was due to Everton? This could be a clear clue to the mandate of the Glazer clan. And it may also be another explanation of Ferguson's apparent keenness to retain Ferdinand in light of his current actions. He may be worried that they wont finance a deal for a suitable replacement.
Angeleus - what will you be saying in three years time when Rio starts demanding even more money again, will you back him then?

You do not win major honours by ******* off your best defender and one of the best defenders in the world.
I am so glad Rio has signed.. very happy indeed am I today.
And if he keeps up the good work, I would be glad to pay him more cash next time round, he is quality through and through and deserves to be paid as such.
all man u fans can now relax and trust the glazer family, they will for sure help the team.

I tend to see the bigger picture instead of wearing my red tinted specs all the time.
Are you watching the match today by the way:
I reckon 2-0 maybe 3-0 to us.. Rooney x2 + Ruud
Wassup:
I was a bit wary of the Glaziers since they first arrived but apart from plunging us into debt, which will eventually get paid off in the next few years, they have put money into the club which we did not have this season to make some decent signings for a change + they got rid of Kleberson and P Neville and - rumour has it that Ballack and Owen will be on their way to us soon!!
So its looking up for us at last.

The money has to come from somewhere. Have you any idea of the interest glazer is paying on his loans?
I think the proof in in the pudding. You dont care where the money comes from as it won't be from YOU, as at 8.01pm you were sat at your PC, exactly 4 minutes before YOUR team kicked off whilst playing at home 35 miles away.
I think perhaps I would have your ROSY perspective about this all if i was one of those fans that never actually got their hands dirty, such as yourself.
P.S We need a defensive midfielder to replace keane, NOT Ballack, unless you were prepared to sacrifice Scholes.

Sorry bud, Michael Owen is coming back to Liverpool. And we have a meeting arranged with Ballack and his agent in October (so early, to get the jump on other teams), to hopefully persuade him to sign a pre-contract with us in January.
Gerrard, Alonso and Ballack. Now that's a midfield trio.

The debt will be paid off, by us going to matches and by merchandising and the like- the point I was making is, this debt will only be hanging over us for a number of years, its not like it is unpayable is it??
So by me not going to the match last night - I am harming Utd why?
The fans still dont get it, and if you are a anti-glazier fan as well, you dont get it do you.
The Glaziers are in control of the club, you and the muppets protesting outside have ****ing lost.. give it up now.
You wont get rid of the glaziers, if you dont like it, **** off to chelsea.. otherwise back the team to the full
Most supporters 'dont get their hands dirty' as you say, most fans havent been to old trafford, but yet they still buy the shirts and follow the team through thick and thin.. if we lost all their support, we would be in the ****.
Its simple really, and united fans should learn to realise this as well- you dont have to go to OT to be a Utd fan, just back the team through thick and thin, buy the shirts and back the players- not boo the **** out of them.
Simple really.
We do need a DF midfielder now, not next year, looking at Keanes performance last night.. Gattuso would be nice, but I would rather see Ballack and Scholes at the minute with Owen up front with Ruud and Rooney.

Not from what I've heard my friend-- the only team in the running for Owen now is us, mark my words.

I'm affraid we've heard conflicting reports then. My personal view is that he'll be in our squad for the Sunderland game.
With regards to Ballack, he wont be joining anyone in January, merely signing a pre-contract. Apparently he sees Didi Hamman as a bit of a role model, by the way.
We will have to wait and see then fella, but whoever Owen goes to.. its gonna be a good season to see him back where he rightfully should be, back in good old blighty!
Ballack- I'm sure I heard that about Didi as well.. but still, I reckon he would prefer the Keano position at Man Utd.
Guderian 10-08-2005, 12:23 F off to Chelsea? I think you are the fickle one my friend
"I will walk away if we become a selling club!!", I seem to recall you saying.
How on earth can the Glazers buying us be a good thing? Are you completely mad?
How we now be in a better position than we were before?
Please tell me.
I am not against takeovers per se. I would have welcomed an Abramovich character - he paid off Chelseas debts and pumped money into them. Glazer is not in a position to do that. Economies will HAVE to be made sooner or later. And that can only be to our detriment.
Guderian 10-08-2005, 12:26 P.S How on earth could Ballack "prefer the Keano position".
He is not a defensive midfielder. If you played him there you would not be playing to his strengths. There is no way he would buy it - he is a goal scoring midfielder who needs just that sort of player (defensive) behind him.
Ballack and Scholes in the middle? Do me a favour. We would be swamped.

I said if our world class talent goes, so do I! Its not being fickle!
Its just I would take it as our management dont know what they hell they are doing and also fergie, ie: with the Jaap Stam farce which set us back a couple of years before Rio came in.

We are in debt, which is a problem, we wont be in debt forever and if the glazier family want to keep putting money into bettering the squad when we apparently had no cash to spend this season.. then I am all for them being at the club.

So your saying if the glaziers had **** loads of cash you would welcome them with open arms? Just because they dont have a bottomless pit your against them, just because we are now in debt for a few years.
Ballack

I would like to see a DF in keanes mould, I dont think we are going to get Gattuso and now Davids is at tottenham who I reckon would have been worth a shot for a couple of years.
Our CM is not as good as it should be at the moment, very evident to me when we played on Tuesday night- showing me Keane is now getting past it also Scholes is still giving the ball away no end- hence I would like to see Ballack in the middle for now with Scholes.
Ballack can hold up the ball- Scholes does not seem to be able to do so.. but yep you are right in a way, we would be swamped so who do you suggest we get into the CM area then if not Ballack?
Guderian 10-08-2005, 23:06 Who said we had no money before the Glazers? Had you seen our balance sheet? Its called being prudent!
United do it every year - have done since Martin Edwards. They plead poverty in order to get selling clubs to be realistic about their prices - Lyon and Essien right now is an example of a club taking the maximum that they think they can get.
Financially, we are not better off under the Glazers. That is a fact. The belt has to be tightened somewhere.
Crap!
We used all our remaining cash on Rooney last year.
They were not going to give us any cash before we sold players.. until the glaziers came in and now we have £25m+ a season to spend on players.. but I reckon they will give us more if need be.
Essien is a quality player, but I dont think there will be any takers for £30m+ though.
Financially, you are right- we are in debt, but all debts can be paid one way or another so I'm not that bothered about it to be honest.
Angelus I see you've changed your opinion about the Glazers since you posted this here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29108&highlight=shareholders+united).
Of course you're entitled to change your opinion but I'm just wondering what has changed your mind since you posted back in February when you didn't seem to be in favour of the takeover? And hence why I posted a link in that thread to the Shareholders United website...
Guderian 11-08-2005, 12:35 Double crap to you!
"We used all our money on Rooney"!!!!!!!!
What, because Gill said so?? Are you deranged or something? Thats ALWAYS the way United have been run. We plead poverty, even when there is money. Its the simple law of buying and selling. Never let the seller know how much money you have.
Do you honestly think they have made ANY money available for transfers that wasn't already there?
If Owen and Ballack were available and the Glazers hadnt got involved with us, we would still have been in for them.
Words fail me.

Hey there!
I have changed my opinion of the Glaziers now, and to be fair to them I think everyone should give them a chance and see what happens.. being in debt aint really good but then again, they have managed to bring in 2 brilliant players and will also give fergie for any new signings he needs to make allegedly.
Also they have sorted rio out .. which is brilliant for us.

Triple crap and back to you fella--
We used all our available cash for this season on aquiring Rooney last season.. Gill has said it and so has fergie!
Why would fergie make this up??
Yes I am deranged- thanks for asking :)
Last year we did plead poverty, because we didnt have the funding that we appear to have now with the backing of the glaziers- laughable as this may seem to you!
Owen/Ballack - we would not have had the money to get BOTH of these in this year without glaziers help by the way!

Just heard through the grapevine that Wee Michael was at Melwood yesterday......
We were waiting for Baros to go, but decided it's better to move quickly, David Moores has offered to put the money up personally.
Now that's a chairman.
Cardinal 12-08-2005, 14:28 Owen will be back at Liverpool very shortly. There's no way he'd go to Newcastle - why would you want to? And Man U can't afford him!!
Guderian 12-08-2005, 17:28 What makes you think the Glazers will fund Owen/Ballack?
Have they said so?
Don't you thinks its odd we haven't moved for either yet? I cannot believe your naivety. We are not signing Owen.
I personaly am pleased because he is over rated and will not fit into our system/style of play.
As for Ballack, if we do sign him, it will be next year when he is out of contract. For free.
Your whole argument is based on the idea that the Glazers have made cash available for two players that we havent showed ANY signs of buying!
Owen to Pool.
Ballack to Spain/Italy.
Guderian 12-08-2005, 17:30 P.S As for Fergie also pleading poverty as well as Gill, i refer you to the economic reasoning I provided earlier.
Why tell everyone you have heaps of cash? They will fleece you on the price if you want to buy something from them.
Thats why.
