View Full Version : Very heavy steering with PAS Sony 19-04-2005, 16:06 My golf has got power steering but feels like it hasn't quite simply. It's so hard to turn the wheel its unbelievable! Why??:D AJ sheffield 19-04-2005, 16:08 Too much fluid, too little fluid, could be either. Could be steering pump, rack. Look for any leaks on the seals and check levels. Dunno if the pumps belt driven or gear driven but look at those too. Sony 19-04-2005, 16:21 could it be just to do with leaks? I can't see any at all. Lurch 19-04-2005, 16:34 It could be a leak that you can't see. It could be that there isn't a leak and it's been overfilled. It could also be a knackered pump, which you won't be able to tell by looking at it. Does it make any noise at all when in operation, i.e. moving the steering wheel? Sony 19-04-2005, 16:36 No, no noise whatsoever. And as far as I can tell the power steering liquid is between min and max so it shouldn't be overfilled. Lurch 19-04-2005, 16:38 It's looking like a dodgy pump, or some other reasonably major component of the PAS. I'd suspect pump, but get it checked before buying a new one. sanman 19-04-2005, 16:39 I had a similar problem with my A6, it turned out that the belt driving the pump had snapped. beansfeast 19-04-2005, 16:40 Originally posted by Sony could it be just to do with leaks? If you can't see any leeks, how about carrots or even celery - they can sometimes be at the root of these problems! (Sorry, couldn't resist!) Sony 19-04-2005, 16:43 Oh for gods sake! its just gone to the garage and cost me £100. How can I avoid the high costs???? Lurch 19-04-2005, 16:45 Originally posted by Sony Oh for gods sake! its just gone to the garage and cost me £100. How can I avoid the high costs???? You don't hang about! What is the £100 for? owdlad 19-04-2005, 16:46 Originally posted by Sony Oh for gods sake! its just gone to the garage and cost me £100. How can I avoid the high costs???? What you need is to find a good car breakers ;) :D Sony 19-04-2005, 16:50 Its very frustrating. The water pipe had to be changed, it had to be a VW part, £31+ VAT+ £9 coolant + £42 labour+ Now the power steering has gone wrong... Don't get me wrong the power steering does work, but feels very heavy when reversing, actually especially reversing. cgksheff 19-04-2005, 18:08 Sony, Is this the 2nd Hand Power Steering that you had fitted yourself ?????? (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28493) Sony 19-04-2005, 19:03 No it was fitted as standard. The polo crashed....... automech 19-04-2005, 20:24 Hi Sony, You say the power steering works but is heavy when reversing, the most common fault for this is under inflated tyres check tyre pressures. hope thats your fault ...... very cheap to fix metalman 19-04-2005, 22:15 Perhaps you're suffering from some sort of muscular wasting disease. Lateral thinking there in case you hadn't spotted it. fredsredhat 22-04-2005, 20:05 a quick test to see if you have any assistance. park at the top of a big empty hill with the engine running. let the car roll down the hill and steer left to right. go back to the top and try this again with the engine switched off. (BEWARE THE BRAKES WILL WORK AT A FRACTION OF THEIR NORMAL POWER) if the steering is the same weight then you have no power assistance i.e. a belt has snapped. If it is a lot harder than it is now i'd say it's a hydraulic fault and go to a local VW specialist. (ive heard the guy on gilpin st is good) |
