samlasota 13-07-2008, 04:00 PM was just wondering what peoples thoughts were on renting a house with two dogs as part of the agreement????
I will be renting mine out shortly after the new year as a terrace with inclosed garden and large attic bedroom with 2 more bedrooms, dining room lounge , off shot kitchen and cellar. I will be renting it out due to going to New Zealand and i currently have 2 labradors that I dont want to rehome as I may only stay over there for a year, and I know there are a few people that want to rent and also want to have pets, so this could be a trail run for a year to see what type of commintment it would be to own 2 dogs and see whether they are up for the challenge!!!
does this sound utterly crazy or is it something that someone would be interested in???
Also all expenses would be paid for them, and the house would be fully furnished!
:D
midgecat 14-07-2008, 10:29 AM Sounds like a good deal for someone. I'd want to be very confident with them to leave my animals with them though.
What happens if they dont get on with the dogs and get rid of them while you are away - or they decide they like them that much they take them with them but tell you they 'died' or ran off or something like that. Will there be a deposit placed on return of the dogs.
Could the tennants blame 'your' dogs for damge to property whilst you are away as a bid to get deposit back if damage occurs.
Who will be liable for cost of vets bills and food whilst away?
Sorry to look on the negative side but after having both good and a very bad tennant experience I would err on the side of caution.
I think if you can find someone you like and trust fair enough but if not I would re-home them. We have more than £300 worth of fish away when we went travelling and let our house out as didnt want to leave the responsibility of upkeep and maintenance of the tank on a tennant.
Powerage 14-07-2008, 01:33 PM I certainly wouldn't trust anyone I didn't really know as they may just say ok yes we will look after them take your money and get rid of the dogs and you would be none the wiser until you got back.
Renting houses out is full of pitfalls and many tenants do not give a monkeys as after all they have the attitude it isnt their house.
samlasota 14-07-2008, 06:01 PM Thanks for all the advice and a deposit would be required and a contract set up with solicitors, also possibly a police check would be required. But again I wouldnt want to rehome them incase i came back after a year, or decided i wanted to stay in which case I would transport them over, just dont like the idea of them getting upset over moving there and moving back again if it doesnt work out. I supose the ideal solution would be to look for someone to foster them, but not having much luck with finding any information about theis either!!!!
teeny 14-07-2008, 06:05 PM Its not impossible to find someone who loves pets to do the job lol gl to you
samlasota 14-07-2008, 06:28 PM that would be fantastic, if I could. i had thought about kennels but they were taken to one once only for a weekend and were so distressed that i have never put them back into kennels. A family (as they are both great with kids) or professional couple would be great, and im more than happy to pay all expenses.
Anneke 14-07-2008, 09:56 PM Hi where abouts is the house? I am looking for somewhere to rent and I absoloutely love Labradors, my mom has one. Also I haven't got a pet at the moment because no-one wants to rent and allow pets but I really love animals. Where abouts is your house and how much are you thinking of renting for?
Thanks
donoghue 14-07-2008, 10:49 PM If the dogs were distressed after a few weeks in the kennels how do you think they would feel after you left them for a whole year!! dogs are part of the family and you have a responsibility to look after them - unless you can leave them with a family member then do not go to new zealand - sorry to be harsh but my dogs are my children and I would not leave them with anyone I did not know!!!

Thats why i did say that i wouldnt put them into a kennel and I am trying to find the best solution for them, If I didnt find anyone suitable to look after them with the house I obviously wouldn let the dogs stay in the rent and also i did mention the possible need for a police check. Inferring that I dont care about my dogs an unfair judgment to make, if i didnt care I would send them to the city dogs home, as it is they have their own place to live at them moment and I am trying to save them as much distress as possible rather than moving them to a new home and family will doubly distress them.

Bit harsh that not to mention hypocritcal. You say she shouldnt leave them with people she doesnt know, but you think its ok for her to leave them with family whom the dogs wont know. What exactly is the difference? The OP clearly cares about her dogs and she is trying to find the best solution for a difficult situationm- give her a break
liza D 16-07-2008, 09:43 AM so you want someone to pay you for the privelidge of taking on the responsibility of your two pets. I think the idea of leaving the dogs in their own home is fine but don't agree that whoever takes them on has to pay for it. People charge for this service as you can see by the posting by teany and it's not cheap either. May i suggest you get in contact with an agency that actually deals with this type of situation. must be some up here i know they have them down south. They usually have people on their books who pet-sit in exchange for accomodation. they have already done the checks for you. Good luck whatever you decide.

i will be renting the house out with or without my 2 dogs, and I have mentioned that I am willing to cover the costs for the dogs(please read original post carefully!) I just thought I would find out what people think, I as I know that the majority of lettings dont allow pets and as its short term people may want to find out what its like to live with 2 dogs before making a full commitment to have there own. Ive seen so many people wanting to rehome their pets after a 6month period which is a shame. This way it would give the person the 'feel' of owning a pet before they have to make a full term commitment.
sue100 08-08-2008, 10:56 AM Hi-would personally be interested in this kind of rental. Myself and 13yr old daughter have just returned from Spain and looking for accomodation in Sheffield. We love animals(have many years experience with labs!)but until we were to be settled somewhere are unwilling to take on life long committment-and yet we miss not having dogs.I have not read all your post so not sure where you are up to; but if you are still interested please contact me.
