Hi,

Ive noticed all the signs and thing are up for it now and that everything looks ok inside but is it even open yet? I'm off out tonight and just wondered if its open.
I was just wondering if anyone has been to 'Babylon' and what they thought of it. Thanks

I felt obliged to sign up and give you my two penny's worth as nobody was forthcoming...

I've been in Babylon twice since it opened and only have good things to say. Its nicely decorated and cool (a million times better than it was!). The staff seem lively and enjoy their job and early on both the times I've been in I've been offered table service which was a nice touch - I like the fact that its really laid-back until it gets busy and you don't even have to get up to go to the bar (ha ha lazy!!). Drinks are reasonably priced and the music is good (although I will admit I did hear the Macarena once!!). Overall I think it was time for the change and it works well. I reckon it will do well when the students come crashing back. At the very least it's worth a shot (and a mojito if you ask me...)

Where is this mystical club I've not heard of itIts not a club its a 90's themed late bar. Although the 90's were packed full of great music no doubt this place will serve up a steady diet of novelty euro pop, steps, five, take that, east 17 and spice girls records

Again I would say give it a go... Undoubtedly there'll be some nights where they play a lot of cheese but I was certainly surprised witha lot of the music I heard.

Suddenly I am very glad I asked that question, another place to avoid! Cheers DD. Mind you its a sign of how the years are ticking on by isn't it, I remember walking past Reflex (shudder) when it first opened an talking to a mate about how long it would take till we got a 90s themed bar, we had Flares for a while, then Reflex, now babylon.

Hi Stormy, we felt obliged to also sign up as it's obvious discodown hasn't actually been in! Please feel free disco to come along as we think you'll be pleasantly surprised. First of all Babylon is a bar that happens to play 90's music as there is a lot of demand for that right now as our extensive ( and expensive) research has proven. We have only just opened our doors and will be constantly changing and improving, the decor isn't 90's themed we are a bar first and foremost! We have an extensive and very reasonably priced cocktail menu and yes we offer full table service.
Please visit our facebook group for photographs and reviews. You can email us on manager@babylonsheffield.co.uk for info but we suggest you come try us for yourselves!

Flares is/was a 70's theme bar but did it play any proper disco (not abba and village people)? any of the new wave of british heavy metal? any early hip hop? any dub? any philadelphia soul? no it was a steady diet of cheesy party records. Flares is an 80's theme bar, does it play any electronica, any house, early techno, heavy metal? no it does however play a stream of wham, kylie, bros, rick astley and general 80's cheesy pop.

I'm assuming that Babylon is owned by the same company therefore will almost certainly supply a steady stream of 90's pop and euro dance novelty records. If it does then say so, theres nothing wrong with that. People like it and you'll make a lot of money. Theres no shame in catering for the lowest common denominator but don't pretend its going to be something it isn't because thats just wrong

I think the name instantly lets it down to be honest. I have come across a few bars up and down the country named Babylon and all of them are the kind of places that end up being frequented by really old men, uncomfortable office parties and young local kids who realise they don't need to sit around the parks drinking 20/20, they can go to babylon.

Nylon has a **** name too (kind of like a cheap fibre), but that had some reputation as being Bar Matrix. It will be interesting to see if babylon can entice a new crowd or whether its just another place for people to get **** faced enough to ask another human being for sex.

Good luck though.

Now a 90's themed bar? There was a nineties themed bar downstairs in Reflex for the last three years at least. Until it turned into a Flares.

Me and my mate ended up going here last Saturday (when i posted i think) and we enjoyed it. Its open until 3pm. It opens early as a cocktail bar then later on changes into a night vlub type of thing. The music is from the 90s so we heard quite alot of different stuff, ie. Five, Britney spears, Backstreet Boys, Gina G i think etc..

We enjoyed it and I believe she wants to go back again. I don't know if that was because she got a snog or because of the club lol :hehe:

Oh and by the way the club wasn't full of young ones either. It had ages ranging from 18 all the way upto about 50. Even people with grey hair!! So it wasn't just a young persons place. Not when we went anyway

Hoops 67...well, I couldnt have put it better meself...your observations are really very accurate, if it isnt as you describe in reality at present, It wont be long before it fits your description perfectly, I went in, just reminds me of half a dozen other spittoons around Sheffield, in general though & I hate to generalise unless its absolutely necessary, most bars of this nature go the way you describe, start off fine, only letting peeps in that look like they didnt get their outfit knitted by the council, have their own hair, some teeth and look like they can string enough words together to form a sentence when prompted at the appropriate time : PINT O BEER! Half a Lager!
Only bar in town that kept it up for quite a long time , record even, before it nosed dived into the pit of bar room doom & dysfunction was the Crystal Bar....Used to be scrummy in there at one time, mind you Vodka Rev is still ok, or is it, everytime I go in their lately I feel like half the pub is staring at me, paranoid? nah... Just tall with no one to block me view..... they were y'know , honest they were :)

Shows what I know then. To be fair I woiuld rather go to work than go to Flares and Reflex for a night out. Seriously. Its not my bag

Went to the new 90s place in Town, was kind of dreading it, I did think they would be playing nothing but Take That.

But I take my hat off to them, good mix of all 90s music from the Charlations, REM, Prince, Take that (was played a couple of times) and some other great stuff I'd not heard for ages, so well done to the new bar.

Plus unlike 80s bars, there were not loads of sweaty hairy middle aged bloaters all over the place, or middle aged men on the pull

Great night out (whatever the name of the place is) look forward to spending many a saturday night in there

90's bar? Hahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahaha. Has everyone gone mad? :loopy: The 90's only ended 7 and a half years ago. What's next.......'Early 2000's Bar'? Folk will be getting nostalgic for things they did last week soon. Madness!

first of all surely the 90's ended 8 and a half years ago. secondly it begun 18 and a half years ago so i guess some of the music isn't that recent.

I'm loving that Babylon has come to Sheffield. (It's a chain of nightclubs in it's infancy; so we do well to get it before most).

Never forget the 90's!!

I don't recall dressing smartly at any point in the 1990's apart from my brothers wedding! They must have forgotten about the whole grunge thing?

Perhaps they are adopting the Shirt and tie approach that you used to have to wear to get into Cairos in the late 80's - always used to make me laugh, these lads you'd see all week in their jeans and t shirts borrowing their dad's suits.

Some of us were talking about it last night. I wouldn't mind popping in for one drink to see what it's like but as it's in the end of town I rarely drink in, I can't see it becoming a regular haunt. If i want that sort of night, I'll just go out in Rotherham!

Ill bet you by 90s they mean they are playing Take That, Boy zone , Spice girls, Robby Williams etc etc crap instead of Prodigy, Born Slippy, Blur/Oasis, Pulp, Felix, Snap, Happy Mondays, Verve, and loads of other good stuff !!

Its called Babylon - across from Crystal Bar off West Street. Don't know what the road is called. Oh its where Flares used to be - gone from the 80's to 90's now.

i found it very amusing that every single band on your list bar Felix and Snap (i think) are played at Babylon. to be honest when i first heard of it i did think "oh dear.." assuming the 90's theme to equal cheesy pop. it does not, however. Babylon will play almost anything providing it was released in the 90's. Their music list is very extensive featuring artists and songs that are far from cheesey.

For example -
Prodigy - Out of Space
Faithless - Insomnia
Underworld - Born Slippy
Oasis - Wonderwall
Blur - Parklife
Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy
Daft Punk - Around The World
Lauryn Hill - Everything Is Everything
etc...

of course pop songs from the 90s are included, which you may not like, but a set list including songs you love and songs you don't is the same in every bar/club.

basically, as already explained, i feel that Babylon is a bar first and foremost, the music is not designed to be taken incredibly seriously, the idea is just to go out and have a laugh with it.

hi
bad experience with babylon club saturday night. my son and two of his mates ended up in hospital, group of xxxxxxx!!!! kicked out of club by bouncers for causing trouble over a girl (whats that about!) does she realise that those idiots rounded up their other pack hound mates waited in a back alley and kicked the xxxxxx out of my son and his two mates. who didnt deserve that, he wasnt even involved. i feel like being a vigilante and going round the clubs to find those and the girl involved and see how they would like their head being kicked in.they wouldnt laugh then, the girl wouldnt like it, it would spoil her looks, but she cant have been a nice girl, and im sure their mothers wouldnt have liked it either. all i can say is watchout ! why the violence ? why cant people just av a good night without the violence. is it the drugs? booze or combination. help me understand. by the way was the incident on cctv or did it catch them running away. and are the police looking into that, thats what i pay my taxes for!
