I also went to the school which has now been demolished with a new one in its place.I was brought up overlooking the school so I have known it all my life.(60 years) owdsmiffy 18-07-2008, 14:07 I went to school here, oooh it's a long time ago, it would have been between 1947ish to 1952ish I think!! was'nt it called "Arbourthorne Junior & Infants School" with the infants bit on the right and the junior bit on the left, with a big hall building inbetween, seem to remember school teas were served in there, and did'nt we used to get into the school after hours and play alsorts of games, running around the place, untill the caretaker (Mr.Myers???) came and chased us away. life seemed to be so much simpler then, can't remember any names though, think I'm getting old!!!! roughy101 18-07-2008, 17:16 gosh this brings back memories, i remember miss renshaw i think she was he nursery teacher and miss walton the headmistress, she was alovely lady and i believe lived to avery old age:) biker 18-07-2008, 23:36 I went to school here, oooh it's a long time ago, it would have been between 1947ish to 1952ish I think!! was'nt it called "Arbourthorne Junior & Infants School" with the infants bit on the right and the junior bit on the left, with a big hall building inbetween, seem to remember school teas were served in there, and did'nt we used to get into the school after hours and play alsorts of games, running around the place, untill the caretaker (Mr.Myers???) came and chased us away. life seemed to be so much simpler then, can't remember any names though, think I'm getting old!!!! It was called the Arbourthorne Central county School. In the middle was the dining hall where I learned to hate beetroot etc.In the middle at the field side (the view from my bedroom window) was the nursery where I started at 18 months in 1948.Mr Myers and his dog ruined many of our football games. He was always chasing us off the field.I think even the CID were involved once I believe.I bit of overkill I think. We used to climb back over the fence and hide in a gap between privet hedges as we were frightened of him.He wouldnt last 5 minutes nowadays would he? Miss Walton was the Junior school head when I left in 1958 and my last teacher was Mrs Davies.I remember the school layout surprisingly well. The classrooms were around open squares and snow used to stack up the walls as you used to wait to go into the classroom stood in it.It definately snowed more in those days. clocker 19-07-2008, 10:28 Are we refering to the school at Brimmsfield and Craddock Rds. ? biker 19-07-2008, 23:35 Are we refering to the school at Brimmsfield and Craddock Rds. ? No, the school at the junction of Brimmesfield and Cradock Roads was Norfolk school clocker 20-07-2008, 13:24 No, the school at the junction of Brimmesfield and Cradock Roads was Norfolk school Plain Talker , the school on Brimmsfield and Craddock was up until 1952-3 called Arbourthorne North County School . The Name was then changed to Norfolk . I was at that school when the name changed . The descriptions of the school that I have read in this thread sounded like the same layout of the building . Even Miss ( June) Watson taught at this school and this prompted me to ask my question . Thanks for the replies , appreciated . The architecture and layouts of both schools would have been more-than very similar, as were most schools, built in the thirties, with their generic quadrangles etc, - I'm thinking Arbourthorne, Norfolk, Shirecliffe, southey to an extent,Wisewood, Herries, (now "Parkwood"), Beck, Hartley Brook, Pipworth, Standhouse, Woodthorpe, Abbeydale Grange Upper School, (Abbeydale Girls' Grammar School as was) High Storrs, and its "almost-twin, on Hatfield house Lane, the schools on Parson Cross:- Monteney and the school whose name I have forgotten, near the White Horse pub, ah, that's it:- Meynell! and these are just the ones in Sheffield I can think of, off the top of my head. The schools at Wybourn, Longley (on Raisen Hall Road?) Earldom Rd (Burngreave) and Hucklow Road school are just a bit before, and are solely red-brick construction, not "two-tone" like most of the others, although they, also, have the "art Deco" touch. At the Open Day, at my old school, High Storrs, someone was talking about a college built on Merseyside, which was literally bang-identical to HSS, right down to the clock tower! clocker 20-07-2008, 16:43 The architecture and layouts of both schools would have been more-than very similar, as were most schools, built in the thirties, with their generic quadrangles etc, - I'm thinking Arbourthorne, Norfolk, Shirecliffe, southey to an extent,Wisewood, Herries, (now "Parkwood"), Beck, Hartley Brook, Pipworth, Standhouse, Woodthorpe, Abbeydale Grange Upper School, (Abbeydale Girls' Grammar School as was) High Storrs, and its "almost-twin, on Hatfield house Lane, the schools on Parson Cross:- Monteney and the school whose name I have forgotten, near the White Horse pub, ah, that's it:- Meynell! and these are just the ones in Sheffield I can think of, off the top of my head.
