View Full Version : Penny in the slot gas meters.
Can anyone remmember the old penny [240 to the pound] gas meters we had one at Shiregreen in the late 40's on a high shelve above the gas cooker not a very good place, my Aunts at Padley way Lane Top hers was in the living room under the window not boxed in.
The question is how did the collector deal with the weight of copper coins,i seem to remember a photograph of a bin arrangment on wheels to transport the money.
Bragard you mean you had gas went we still had candles:hihi:
hillsbro 12-07-2008, 13:30 My grandma had a penny-in-the-slot gas meter in the 1950s. She didn't use much gas as she only had a ring; most of her cooking was done on the good old Yorkshire range. Grandma lived in a cellar-kitchen house at Woodland View and the gas meter was in the cellar. You had to put a penny in the slot and then turn a metal flange all the way round until it dropped, then you had gas for a while. They apparently still make coin-slot gas meters - see http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.electricitymeters.fsnet.co.uk/images/gas1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.electricitymeters.fsnet.co.uk/gas.htm&h=545&w=393&sz=69&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=Z4uy7Qk-NNbpjM:&tbnh=133&tbnw=96&prev=/images%3Fq%3D%2522gas%2Bmeter%2522%2Bcoin%26um%3D1 %26hl%3Den%26cr%3DcountryUK%257CcountryGB%26sa%3DG %26ie%3DUTF-8 The man who emptied the meter looked like a bus conductor with a big leather bag for the cash - maybe he had a bin on wheels as well. Usually there was a slight overpayment and the man would give grandma a few coppers back, which she would share with me so I could go for an ice cream etc. Happy days.
And Sunday afternoons the gas when down low it took ages to cook the roast, also I remember we had to pluck the feathers off the Christmas turkey too, we all took our turn with the tweezers, I magine having to do that now.
I can remember penny slot gas meters and gas lights in my grans house.
sweetdexter 17-07-2008, 17:23 When we first moved onto Parson Cross 1947 we had penny gas meters.
When I left in 1966 it was shilling meters. Inflation I guess
hillsbro 17-07-2008, 17:55 We had two-shilling meters in Dykes Hall Road in 1966. We're a bit posh in Hillsborough.:P

james299 10-09-2011, 23:14 Hi there Hutch
I'm a newbie on this Forum.
I'm a writer seeking an answer from someone in the know...???
on the following:
Penny Gas Meters UK?
Yup, believe it or not...........
I’m doing research about a onetime dramatic situation relating to the old "Penny Gas Meters."
I'm hoping to make contact with a member, or a friend of a Sheffield Forum member.
I have a controversial question that would be much appreciated with an intelligent answer from someone who has, or had, some past experience of the 'penny gas meters' house calls to users of that time?
Should this first opening of mine relating to 'penny gas meters' tweak someone's interest. Then their email contact will be most welcomed; and, they will also find it to be of real genuine interest..!!!
(if you email me Hutch I can give you more information; which you may like to pass on to someone else for me. With my many thanks..!)
A positive outcome from a helpful email contact may also prove to be of much interest to fellow Forum Members..!

We had a penny in the slot gas meter when we lived in Goulder Place Attercliffe. It was in the cellar and a gasman used to come every so often and empty it and count the coins. He would then leave some coins as a kind of rebate for unused gas. Suprisingly one of the gasmen was called Mr Gascoyne. During the war our air raid shelter was in the cellar so when the blitz was on it wasn't a great feeling sitting next to it.
Penistone rd dont think there was any gas in the house, all cooking was done on the Yorkshire and nothing else needed Gas

Imagine the risk assessments having to be carried out today as the 'Gasman' who emptied the meters walked the streets with just a big black square bag with all that money in. Everyone recognised them. Were any of them ever attacked? Plus the weight of the thing - health & safety!!
We used to have a Penny in the slot gas meter in the celler when I lived in Heeley and I remember all the above well, also in my bedroom at the back there was a gas mantle on the wall.
I remember one day turning the tap and gas coming out, when I told my mother pandemonium broke out in our yard because every one naturally thought they had been disconnected.
They soon where...:hihi:
pensionipper 11-09-2011, 11:08 I worked with a pal whose dad had been a 'meter emptier' and wore a large leather pouch to empty the coins into. One house he visited had a meter in the cellar that had no light; he would unlock the drawer and tip the contents into the pouch, but here it only contained water, never money. Wet and puzzled this business went on for years until it was finally discovered that the culprit was one of the very few inthose days who had a fridge and was making ice 'pennies'. Ice little earner...
james299 11-09-2011, 12:38 Gotcha, n'ice one..!!!
Here is something else to smile at.
The Perfect Husband (show it to the ladies)
Several men are in the locker room of a golf club. A cellular phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands-free speaker function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen.
MAN: "Hello"
WOMAN: "Hi Honey, it's me. Are you at the club?"
MAN: "Yes."
WOMAN: "I'm at the shops now and found this beautiful leather coat. It's only $2,000. Is it OK if I buy it?"
MAN: "Sure, go ahead if you like it that much."
WOMAN: "I also stopped by the Lexus dealership and saw the new models. I saw one I really liked."
MAN: "How much?"
WOMAN: "$90,000."
MAN: "OK, but for that price I want it with all the options."
WOMAN: "Great! Oh, and one more thing. I was just talking to Janie and found out that the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They're asking $980,000 for it."
MAN: "Well, then go ahead and make an offer of $900,000. They'll probably take it. If not, we can go the extra eighty-thousand if it's what you really want."
WOMAN: "OK. I'll see you later! I love you so much!"
MAN: "Bye! I love you, too."
The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths wide open.
He turns and asks,
"Anyone know whose phone this is...?"
............
PS...Do you know of a Gas Meter Fitter I can talk too..?

Does no one remember filling them up with water ?

Eli,Eli, can you imagine any blagger boppin' some 'gasman' over the head for a bag of pennies? The hernia wouldn't be worth the trouble.
handypandy 12-09-2011, 19:40 I remember the penny meter when we lived on Cookson Rd in 1956, I was six years old at the time. Around 1970 ish I visited a house in S6 off Holme Lane, maybe Haden St or Beechwood I'm not sure. An old couple lived there and didn't even have electric in the house. Gas lights, fridge, cooker etc.... and to my amazement, a gas iron!
pensionipper 14-09-2011, 08:03 Worked on a gas iron (on the document it was down as a Goose Iron) in a sweat shop about 1971 converting it to natural gas. It was still in regular use; the conversion was 'ad hoc'.
