View Full Version : What business would you start?
If you had the chance and the conditions were perfect to do so, what business would you start?
Is it a far fetched dream or will it happen one day?
If it a far fetched dream, what preventing you from making it a reality? Money, family, lack of skills, fear of failure.... other reasons?
*Twinkle* 13-10-2003, 17:11 I'd start up a sandwich shop! lol! You'd be surprised how much people pay for a sandwich at lunchtime when its the only place open.... :)
The only things preventing me from doing this are:
~my age
~no money to start business up with
~no idea how to do business calculations....or any other calculations for that matter...
~I know I can do better than be a sandwich shop keeper!
I would start a pharmaceutical company which would find a way of creating a pill which reduces the amount of time required to sleep. E.g. if taken it could speed up the bodily functions that take place during sleep and halve the amount of sleep required, so the average 8 hour night would become 4. You would wake feeling just as revitalised as you would after an 8 hour night. The result? More leisure time, less stress, better work - life balance.
mr craig 13-10-2003, 23:09 Think i'd like to open a pool hall, then just spened all day running racks of 9-ball!
Seriously though,i think i you opened a high quailty pool hall that used all the top-spec table/cloths/facilaties then i think you could make a real go of it.As for whats stopping me doing this:-
1)Complete lack of business knowage.
2)Complete lack of finacial knowage.
3)Complete lack of money!!

And you would have one very regular customer here!!
purplepippa 13-10-2003, 23:44 I dunno...
It'd have to be to do with books and music.
But I wouldn't want to be taking people's money for profit.
It would have to be some kind of co-operative library type place I think.
With conversation clubs for people who want to improve their English, mother and baby stuff, youth groups, that kind of thing too.
An all round positive community building type project really.
We would also have a fair trade cafe :)

There is a 'Subway' franchise in Wakefield.
PS already started my business... www.mobileunlocked.co.uk
alchresearch 14-10-2003, 12:05 I'd like to open a sailing / scuba diving or fishing business in Abersoch, North Wales. I could do it now I suppose, but there are lots of others already there, so I would use the money to eliminate the competition!
There is a 'Subway' on Division Street now. But I'm guessing you know that already
I'm confused  :P
Moon Maiden 14-10-2003, 14:47 I would start up an occult and magickal supplies shop catering for everyone from your new age crystal lovers to those who practise the dark estoeric arts.........
oops already have!!
The things that nearly stopped me was financing. The idea sprung into my head and I knew I could pull it off I just couldn't get finance - then enter the Princes Trust who give me lots of mula to start my shop!!
Hurrah!
Moon
I'd start a Horse Caravan holiday company doing tours of the peak district in a Romany Caravan!! There difficult to drive but who cares!! :D
OOooh Moon is your shop a mail order company or a normal shop?? I wouldn't mind shopping there!!

Hurrah, you have Subways. We have them all over the place here. Do you think they will honour my coupons. I have loads of freebies cos we get sandwiches from there all the time.
Oh sweet, hubby will feel so much at home.
id say so, my coupons are little tiny square things you have to lick and put on a card :)
WintersMist 15-10-2003, 15:42 A late night bar that incorporates gallery space to show up and coming artists - like myself :D Of course would be very gay friendly :P

Yup, those are the ones. If you can be bothered to save em up and stick em on a card, you deserve a free one.
I'd open a typical English Tea Shoppe. I'd serve hot buttered tea cakes and scones with jam and clotted cream. You'd have to sit at a table with a lacy table cloth and drink out of real china cups and saucers. I have chintzy curtains up at the window too. No coffee will be served but different varieties of tea from all around the world. I've often thought about that. The Americans love that kind of stuff. At the back of the shop I'd sell Mcvities Digestive biscuits and chocolate Hob Nobs. I sell my mums home made jam too. I'd have all sorts of English stuff like tea towels with the Union Jack and t-shirts from Sheffield. God I miss home!! Can you tell??
back2basics 16-10-2003, 12:45 I am in the process of setting up a online-only record label. Taking small payments of 50p for exclusively signed independent tracks. The music industry, as is, is struggling. Small labels more than most. People need an outlet and they need somebody to promote their tracks. Lot's of great music never gets signed, and there are lots of bands making absolutely nothing.
But all i have ever wanted to do is have a small bar and restaurant on a beach, somewhere warm... maybe grow olives and grapes as well :)
The business i would like to start up [and maybe i just might v.soon] is marketing some indigenous sweets/foods from the Caribbean [read Trinidad and Tobago] to the masses.
I am actually thinking of doing something for Valentine's Day..sweet boxes with a difference.
PLUS seeing that i am so articulate [hahaha seriously!!] I can also offer customized verses/poetry for your loved one!!!!
Any takers?
