View Full Version : Sheffield United's Chances?
Earwiggo 11-07-2008, 11:04 As there's not much to debate at the moment, I thought I'd try to find out the general feeling of Blades fans about your prospects this season.
Any Owls infiltrators, sensible input only please!
What do you expect from the lads this season.?
Do you fully expect a play off place, and nothing less?
Or do you think that you may struggle a bit in Blackwell's first full season, and would be happy with say, a top 10 finish?
Is hovering around the relegation zone completely out of the question?
Do any of you think that you're bound for the Prem even before a ball is kicked?
Do you expect to start this season in similar form to how you finished last season?
Are you happy with Blackwell's close season signings?
When, if at all, would you think Blackwell may come under pressure, or do you have every confidence in KB and his methods, and you'll be reyt?
Which player(s) do you expect to shine this time around, and is there a fringe
player who could break through, make a proper impact, and make people sit
up and take notice?
Do you think that this is a make or break season for Tonge, and which way do you think it will go. Will he perform, or will he continue to disappoint?
Finally, are you really looking forward to the Sheffield Derby's, and how do you think you'll fare in the two games. Your head's decision, not your hearts!
Enjoy the new season, and don't go doing owt daft!
My prediction for the Blades? ……. Play offs.
After the way the team ended last season, not threatening a playoff spot (or even an automatic promotion spot) from the get-go would be a grave disappointment. Of course, there's always teams coming down to worry about, but then the three teams that went up are now missing, so that really isn't an excuse.
Predicting derby results is a mug's game at best. All too often can I remember the team that was doing badly, beating the other.
On form, United should take the lion's share of the points, but then that was true last season and they didn't....
Earwiggo 11-07-2008, 11:35 Are you happy with the present squad and set up Heyesey?
Is it geared up for a good push do you reckon?
Stockers 11-07-2008, 13:23 I'm confident for the Blades this season, we have one of the league top strikers and with the addition of Cotterill i think we can push on with the form we finished last season on.
Birmingham will be a strong contender for promotion so we've got to get off to a good start against them.
As for the derby matches yoy can never predict them, we should batter you but in all reality it might be the only thing you lot have to play for in the season and as Laws is trying his damn hardest to morph into a Neil Warnock type pantomine character i can see him getting you lot fired up for the derby matches against us. Now we've got Blackwell incharge we've got a hell of a lot more team spirit and more of a never say die attitude so i think we'll be better geared up for the derby matches next season.
I can see you Blades making the play offs if we get decent midfielder in to compliment Gary Speed and Cotterill to supply the ammo from the wing.
Earwiggo 11-07-2008, 16:54 Not a lot of support for Tonge.
It seems that most Blades have probably given up on him.
He did look a cracking prospect 4 or 5 years ago.
It's a shame... and I mean it.
discodown 11-07-2008, 17:10 I'm quietly confident of a playoff place at the least. If we can continue as we left off then we should be ok. As always its about momentum and once you starting getting good results you tend to keep doing ok so a decent start is paramount.
Derby games? Could go either way, we might leather you we might get murdered it all depends on the day
canadablade 11-07-2008, 17:13 Not a lot of support for Tonge.

Like most have said and I can only comment on seeing him a few times but seen enough of him on the televised matches to notice that he doesn't seemed bothered most of the time. He fades in and out of a game.
When he scored that free kick against west Sham I bet Blades fans wouldn't have wanted anything less than 5 mill for him:D Now most Blades are willing to drive him to whatever club will have him :hihi::hihi:
Earwiggo 11-07-2008, 17:16 Could he do a job for Wednesday? .... good job that is.:D
bladebloke 11-07-2008, 17:25 Like most have said and I can only comment on seeing him a few times but seen enough of him on the televised matches to notice that he doesn't seemed bothered most of the time. He fades in and out of a game.

think tongy thrives on confidence. he was garbage under robson put picked up a lot under blackwell. like most others i suppose. but i like tongy and a new season fresh start could be what he needs. lets give him a chance least till christmas.
and he's far too good for pigs. but then again so am i ;)
you could'nt afford him
football is all about confidence, under robson he had none and his performances showed that. now under blackie he's showed us at the back end of the season he as what it takes
he needed a good man manager we now have one

Earwiggo 11-07-2008, 17:38 Any youth, reserve players you'd like to see given a go?
Any young 'un that maybe needs a bit more time but you're looking forward to seeing them in the first team sooner, rather than later?
Who's a future star at the Lane, the one to watch?
OwlGuy08 11-07-2008, 17:39 The pigs will go down!
Earwiggo 11-07-2008, 17:41 And, do you think Blackwell will prove to be 'better' than Warnock?
Do you think he'll take you further than Warnock did, and for a longer time?
Earwiggo 11-07-2008, 17:42 The pigs will go down!
Mr Guy,
Get on handbags with your drivel.
NERVY-OWL 11-07-2008, 18:18 i think they will make playoffs. although blackwells honeymoon period is over i think he should be able to steer them to a play off place at least, hopefully i'm wrong thoughhas the wednesday one of this been deleted anyone, i cant seem to see it:huh:

Oh Earwiggo living in the past come's to mind,it was 15 years ago.
Earwiggo 30-07-2008, 12:39 The Premiership was 18 months ago. You bang on abaht it often enough.
It's still part of history.
Stockers 30-07-2008, 12:57 The Premiership was 2 years ago. You bang on abaht it often enough.

The Premiership was 2 years ago. You bang on abaht it often enough.

I don't mention it Earwiggo check my posts ,when we got relegated apart from the Tevez affair ,I never said nothing after relegation.
I think that proving that we can have an injury free season for our main players we can do well this year. The absolute minimum is a playoff spot but i think we should be within shouting distance of the top spots by the end of the seaon.
Consistency is the key- something that united usually lack.
Floridablade 30-07-2008, 18:40 We'll be the team all others need to beat so it'll be a hard season but I think we'll be top or second

Well we were consistent last season :hihi: Mind crap until Robson got the boot and we then started to field players who should have started from day 1.
Bull Dog 30-07-2008, 21:03 We'll be the team all others need to beat so it'll be a hard season but I think we'll be top or second
Deluded or just stupid???
Earwiggo 01-08-2008, 17:25 That's it then lads. No need for any other teams to bother turning up this season. Reading, Birmingham and United have already done it. Easy wasn't it?:|
Jolly well done to all of you!
Earwiggo 02-08-2008, 22:02 Any other contenders like to stake a claim?
pitsmoorlad 03-08-2008, 04:47 We'll be the team all others need to beat so it'll be a hard season but I think we'll be top or second
Been out in the Florida sun a bit too long there mate ?
pitsmoorlad 03-08-2008, 04:49 We'll be the team all others need to beat so it'll be a hard season but I think we'll be top or second
What we need is a thread starting, where everyone puts down their predictions re finishing positions for the local sides. CB's good at starting them off, he's got nothing better to do out there in lumberjack land.
to include, Owls , Blades, Dingles, Donny, Rotherham (if they're still going) and possiibly Chezzies.
All entries to be in by the first match of the season.
Then at the end of the season we can see who's been realistic and who's been ridiculously optimistic.
Floridablade 03-08-2008, 13:22 Owls 17th, Blades 1st, Dingles 15th, Donny 11th, Rotherham liquidation.
Rocklegend 03-08-2008, 14:11 Blades 6th,Weds 9th,Donny 14th,Dingles 16th,Roth 3rd,Chezzy 5th.
Earwiggo 03-08-2008, 19:51 Champions Reading
Runners Up Birmingham
Play off winners Crystal Palace
5th Sheffield United .....
9th Sheffield Wednesday
15th Barnsley
17th Doncaster
Chezzy 5th Rotherham Relegation now I'm afraid.... but I hope not !!
Earwiggo 11-08-2008, 16:51 Oh Dear !!!!:hihi:

I think we'll have a few bad games and blades fans will jump onto blackwells case. A few of the new lads need to gel before you see real football from them.
Bladesman 30-08-2008, 18:24 We need a creative midfielder to be honest.
Tonge has had his day at the lane unfortunatly.
CorkerSWFC 30-08-2008, 18:44 Both Sheffield Teams played the 2 best teams in Wales today, both of them are no rollovers be it Swansea away or Cardiff at home, if we want to be realistic i thought Cardiff was a dodgy game today for United, as was the Swans away for Wednesday.
I reckon the Swansea fans will be pretty gutted today they were all over us for long periods, but one thing which has made me happy is the amount of character we showed, to withstand that pressure and come back to draw, thats a definate plus i can take from this game, i doubt many teams will take much from the Liberty stadium.
They could well do a Bristol City Swansea and go very close, they have a good nucleus and a decent back up squad wise.
Cardiff will bother any team in this league there a gritty little side who never give up.
Sweep it under the carpet lads and lets see a double whammy from England in the next fortnight.:thumbsup::thumbsup:
Floridablade 30-08-2008, 20:08 Excellent result for Wednesday today well done the Owls. From reports we were second best and lucky to get a draw.
SteveBlade 30-08-2008, 20:49 Excellent result for Wednesday today well done the Owls. From reports we were second best and lucky to get a draw.
We should have got a goal. Henderson missed an amazing chance, and Stephen Quinn could have scored. It was even for most of the game and either team could have won. Fair result but we need to play better.. Hopefully it was just a one off aye?
We need a creative midfielder to be honest.
Tonge has had his day at the lane unfortunatly.
Yeah browns gone and ever since he did tonge went crap.
