View Full Version : Current Films at the Cinema
haddockman 10-07-2008, 10:23 Similar to the "Rate the last film you saw" thread in the entertainment section, but a bit more in depth.
What have you seen recently? Was it any good? What did you like/not like about the film?
haddockman 10-07-2008, 10:24 I'll set the ball rolling. Saw Wanted on Sunday and thought it was fantastic! Not the kind of film I like usually, but I thought the effects, the storyline and the over the top stunts and action made it the most enjoyable action film I've seen in a long time! 9/10!
Beakerzoid 10-07-2008, 12:06 Wanted - a great film. Pure spectacle and style over substance, and I loved it (even though it diverted from the cmic book at times)
Hulk - Pure comic book action, and plenty of nods to the old TV show. Hulk smash!
Kung Fu Panda - As good as the trailer suggested. The animation was cracking, and the style was fitting to the Chinese legend tale.
Hancock - completely different animal to what the trailer made out, and so much better because of it (if it had been the comedy-fest it was marketed at it would have run out of steam quite early on)
Gone Baby Gone - One of the best films of the year, but I class it as last year as i saw it last October.
The Mist - Stephen King + Frank Darabont = Stunning and chilling.
Indy 4 - about average as a generic action film - totally awful when considered as an Indy film. Too much CGI, no structure to the story, and a terrible Deus Ex Machina fuelled plot.
The Forbidden Kingdom - Simple, fun family Kung Fu movie. Jet Li as The Monkey King is ideal, and the best film Jackie Chan has done in a while.
I'm not doing too bad for recent films :)
As always, full reviews eventually make it onto my website and Facebook page
EdnaKrabappe 10-07-2008, 18:17 Wanted - James McAvoy need i say any more? I really liked this, don't know the comic at all. I liked the narrative, reminded me of Ed Norton's "Jack" character in Fight Club and I liked all the slo mo shots.
Prince Caspian - This film started to bore me tbh and i thought there were some gory bits for kids...
Hancock - No way a child's film.... thought it did a u turn part way through and couldn't quite decide where it was going... but still liked it.
Superhero movie- I thought this was pretty ok - did what it said on the can... i did laugh out loud at the Tom Cruise gag and it's rare i do this at a film so it get's a thumbs up just for that!
Sex and the City (twice- lol) Aw how could i not like it. Not many classic lines except one i can't post on the forum from Samantha at the pre wedding dinner.
Hulk - Ed Norton, my favourite actor. Thought it was very good although no way was it a child's film. As Beakerzoid said, I liked the little You wouldn't like me when i'm angry type lines.
Indiana 4 - I wasn't well when i saw this and should have gone home instead of to the toilet five times! Enjoyed it though...
Charlie Bartlett... Thought this was an excellent Ferris Buller type teen film which entertained me all the way through.
Missed the happening - that went off quicker than i expected... you usually warn us Beakerzoid with the two a day showing! And i missed priceless which i intended to see also.
Beakerzoid 11-07-2008, 00:03 Missed the happening - that went off quicker than i expected... you usually warn us Beakerzoid with the two a day showing! And i missed priceless which i intended to see also.
It surprised us too - after a strong 2 weeks it really dropped off on the third week and so was dropped to make way for the multiple prints of Hancock and Kung Fu Panda
youwhatref 11-07-2008, 20:25 Well i usually post in the rate thread and in fact i just have but can elaborate a little more -
Sex and the City - I really enjoyed this, as a guy i do like rom-coms and happily admit it. But i'm not a fan of the serie sbut feel the film worked as a stand alone film and would galdly watch it again (in fact i did get dragged along twice by different female friends)
Priceless - My cinema buddy wouldn't touch this with a barge pole!!! Anything slightly girly then he feels the need to get a pint, eat a kebab and talk football and women!!! So i went along an really enjoyed it. Great film which will be remade in a few years by the Americans
The Escapist - It was ok and did have me slightly hooked but the end tried too hard to twist and left me slightly baffled
Charlie Bartlett - Agree with Edna and after 15 mins wtaching it knew i'd enjoy the film
Wanted - What it says on the tin. Totally OTT, Angelina looks great in it and a decent action film
Indiana - Good sentimental stuff ruined by the weird ending
Hulk - Not seen the first one but this was a decent Comic book film.
Iron Man - Thought it was great but the ending to the Hulk concerned me slightly and they shoudl be kept apart (if you've seen them both you'll know what i mean!!!!)
Th Mist - I love survival horror films and this was a good stab at one. Stephen King does what he does best with the loopy lady, and heartbreaking ending.
haddockman 12-07-2008, 11:56 The Mist - I love survival horror films and this was a good stab at one. Stephen King does what he does best with the loopy lady, and heartbreaking ending.
I really must watch this sometime! I'm curious about what the ending is!!!
I saw Kung Fu Panda twice last week is was that good.
Going to see Wall-E this coming week, then the new Batman on the 25th.
I really must watch this sometime! I'm curious about what the ending is!!!
I watched this last night- it is a must see.
haddockman 13-07-2008, 13:52 Hancock - 7.5/10 - Thought this was going to be a bit rubbish from seeing the trailer, but I was pleasantly suprised. Very enjoyable and nowhere near as stupid as I had thought it might be :)

I agree in part. I surprised myself about how much I did enjoy it but it was still absolute fluff. It felt like it had been written by a geeky, horny 14 year old boy, oow what would happen if I had a gun and was like in a really cool gang and there was loads of car chases and I could bend bullets and I got one over on the school bully and I was like really cool and i pulled angelina jolie etc etc
That said I quite enjoyed it. Though what the chuff was all that stuff about looms about? Not sure that really made sense!
Think this is great by the way - having a specific film forum

Very true that it was absolutely like so teenager's fantasy, but it was brilliant! Thought the looms bit was quite funny really, but guess they had to invent some way to justify killing people at random!!!!

The same applies with films as does with music one persons favourite is another persons rotten tomato! I thought "The Mist" was one of the worst films I've seen this year and for a long time but everyones different :)
Recent ones I've seen (some on dvd)....
Adulthood - Ok, if you liked Kidulthood!
The Mist - As I've said before.....hated it, Stephen King must have been on the wacky baccy again :loopy:
Indiana Jones 4 - Oh deary deary me!
The Happening - Utter cobblers!
Wanted - Not bad, I don't much like Angelina Jolie so that wasn't ideal but it was ok!
The Incredible Hulk - Yeah....not bad, better than "The Hulk" from a few years back.
Cloverfield - Even worse than "The Mist"... :hihi:
Forgetting Sarah Marsh - Great!
Iron Man - Pap!
Forbidden Kingdom - Really, really, really enjoyed it!
haddockman 14-07-2008, 11:12 Forbidden Kingdom - Really, really, really enjoyed it!
Oooh really, I decided not to see this because I'd heard bad things, but think I might give it a go next weekend if it's on at a convenient time!!
honeyb35 21-07-2008, 19:37 I saw Mamma Mia and loved it! I know some people will absolutely slate it, but if you're a girly abba fan you'll probably find it hilarious.
i saw hancock today i really enjoyed it not really a will smith fan but i liked this one a couple of hours of escapisim
EdnaKrabappe 22-07-2008, 16:20 Mamma Mia - so camp, so good! I loved it! And although i am straight, I thought Meryl Streep looked gorgeous in it!
Mamma Mia - so camp, so good! I loved it! And although i am straight, I thought Meryl Streep looked gorgeous in it!
i was tempted to go and see that one but im not brave enough:) next one for me will be kung fu panda
Been to see Hancock this afternoon, absolutely fantastic!!
I almost peed myself laughing
Beakerzoid 22-07-2008, 22:28 Saw The Dark Knight this morning........
......Absolutlely fantastic! The running time flew by (it didn't feel like it was almost 2 and a half hours). Ledger's portrayal of The Joker is perfect - feeling like the Joker of Killing Joke and other such defining comics tales. I urge all to see the film, but be aware that the 12A rating in this case really does mean that it isn't suitable for kids. Some scenes are brutal, twisted, and just plain scary. The young 'uns will have night-terrors watching this!
I was really, really disappointed with the Dark Knight. Especially as Batman Begins was so exceptionally good. My heart sank with the dreadful opening [and very on the nose] dialogue, which in one sense is very comic book but is still awful. I also though it was slow and very boring, not good attributes for an action movie. :( Two Face's genesis was very well developed but everything else seemed a bit thin. A friend who loves such films normally, said he kept checking his watch to see how much more he had to endure.
It surprised us too - after a strong 2 weeks it really dropped off on the third week and so was dropped to make way for the multiple prints of Hancock and Kung Fu PandaCould it be as word got around that The Happening wasn't very good, that people stopped coming? It certainly was not the blockbuster type of movie that the posters indicated, more of an indie/European arthouse movie. Interestingly, my OH's first comment on leaving cinema was "How cheap was that film?"
Hulk - Not seen the first one but this was a decent Comic book film.
Iron Man - Thought it was great but the ending to the Hulk concerned me slightly and they shoudl be kept apart (if you've seen them both you'll know what i mean!!!!)The ending is a setup for further development, that fits in with future films. And also makes perfect sense if you know the comics as the Hulk and Iron Man were both part of the Avengers, as is Captain America who is indirectly referenced in The Hulk film and may appear on the DVD version.
I thought both were great fun and the second Hulk outing was a distinct improvement on Ang Lee's interesting but flawed attempt at the Hulk.
Lazarus78 18-08-2008, 16:26 Saw the new Mummy film other night. Enjoyed it quite a lot....however I want Rachel Weisz back....really did miss her perfect timing with comical lines to compliment Brendan Fraser
Haha .. I've been to see Mama Mia twice now with my daughters .. such a feel good film .. and as it's the nearest I'm going to get to Greece this year ...
I hate the cinema, so to go twice in less than a month is above and beyond ..
I saw Hellboy 2 yesterday. I wasn't really that fussed about seeing it as I'm a bit sick of this whole comic book adaptation era that we seem to be stuck in but I had a thoroughly good time. The plot mostly passed me by but the Hellboy chracter is great, refreshingly angst free for a superhero and I particularly liked the fact that he gives baddies a pummeling with his fists and not with any special high tech gadgetry.
Very good fun indeed.

If heelboyII isn't an advert for hellboyIII I'll be amazed. It was OK, but the first one was far better. Love the hell boy character though
Saw babylon ad last night...very poor, I didn't read any reviews and saw it because of Vin diesel....how he has fallen...terrible ending...as if they ran out of money during production and said 'cut'....bizarre...loads of shouts from the crowd.
Anyone seen 'get smart'...looks funny but the reviews are varying...I'm going tonight
Saw clone wars...was ok, but nothing special...would recommend for kids
The latets mummy..again ok, but not great...it misses Rachel Weiss
Of all the ones we saw this year we went to see the dark knight which was booked out so we went for Game plan instead...the best movie I've seen in ages...really really entertaining.....defo gonna by the dvd when it drops in price....and we didn't even plan it.
Sheffield is pretty decent for cinemas.....
and the cineworld near meadowhall is just amazing....world class...

For me Hellboy II was better than the first - it tapped into the nature of the comics a lot more, and was a lot more fun.
Not bothered with Babylon AD. The trailer did nought for me, and it just looks like average sci-fi. I'll waiti for DVD (or bluray, where I wonder will it be Babylon ADHD :) )
Clone Wars was toss! A few Tv episodes crashed together to make a so-called film! The only good new Star Wars these days seems to be the games. Everything else has been utter rot!
I saw Get Smart and was pleasantly surprised. It isn't a brilliant film, and some of the jokes 'miss by that much' (to quote a line from the film). However when it works, it really works. Carrell carries it for the majority of the film, and the last hour is a huge imrpovement on the first half of the film. Worth seeing as it entertains.
And thanks for the praise :)
spottie2101 06-09-2008, 17:04 I saw Step Brothers the other day and found its so funny i couldnt stop laughing. I expected it to be crap but it was so corny it was funny and definatly cheered me up. If you want spectacular acting its not for you but if you want a giggle id recommend it.
The new Mummy film was ok but thats about it some of the special effects were good and i liked the Yeti's.
Hellboy II was ok but i dont think it was as good as the first one but made me smile in parts.
Anyone seen Zohan i think this looks quite funny????
go and see The Duchess. A really good film
mamasquirrel 08-09-2008, 17:16 I saw Zohan - thought it was hilarious - had me proper laughing; but then I do like really really silly things (and this film is silly :hihi:)
spottie2101 16-09-2008, 12:34 I found Zohan funny but not as funny as Step Brothers.
We watch The strangers yesterday and i thought that was brilliant i become so engrossed i even screamed out loud at one point then felt very embarrased about it. If you want a good scare i definatly recommend it!!!!
haddockman 24-09-2008, 08:30 I watched Pineapple Express the other night, didn't think it was as funny as some of the other films from the same group of people. Seemed a little bit over the top on action for me, but very much enjoyed it nevertheless!!
Also saw The Wave last night, definately reccomend it to anyone who likes 'interesting' films. It follows a school teacher's project to run his class like a dictatorship, asking the class if they think another dictatorship could develop in modern day Germany. The class say "no", however the teacher manipulates them and by the end of the week, things are out of control and the class' idea is disproved. Definately reccomend this!
Not heard of The Wave Haddockman, but sounds interesting. Might check that out.
Anyone heard anything about the Pacino/De Niro film out this week? The trailer looked like every other film they'd ever been in, but strangely compelling?!:hihi:

It's on at Cineworld this week only and presumably at the Showroom too. Thumbs up to Cineworld for showing this sort of film!
Not heard anything about that one.....I'll probably go and see it in the next couple of weeks. It'll either be really good, or a crap film people will see JUST because it's got De Niro & Pacino in.....we'll see!
Will try and squeeze a viewing in then.

That'll be Righteous Kill which comes out this Friday. Looks pretty decent from the trailer (but then again, that's the job a trailer is supposed to do). It is written by the same guy who wrote the script for Inside Man, which was alright but nothing special. Reviews online seem to put Righteous Kill in the above average scoring.
spottie2101 25-09-2008, 10:05 We watched the Boy he stripped Pjs and what a brilliant film, i didnt know if i fancied it at first but heard such good things about it and it was a 100 times better than expected.
We also watched Tropic Thunder in my opinion dont bother - enough said.
stevesheff08 25-11-2008, 23:51 film to see is death race if you like that sort of film i thought it was brill
transpporter 3 looks good might have to see that
EdnaKrabappe 26-11-2008, 21:57 Really enjoyed choke full of batty old women! A glimpse into the future mebbe!
youwhatref 27-11-2008, 20:29 I wasn't so sure by Choke and only gave it 5/10. I think it wanted to be too dark.
I didn't score Blindness on the other thread but found this so frustrating. It isn't an easy watch and is someones view on what happens if everyone goes blind and how we'd react. But i didn't buy into the Julianne Moore charachter and fel frustrated by her.
Body of Lies was a good and tense watch. Had poor reviews generally but it kept me hooked and was an interesting piece of film that didn't side with either cause.
My Best friends girl was watchable. I read somewhere that is should have been an 18 cert but they toned it down to get the teens in which is a shame. Hopefully the DVD version will be more true.
youwhatref 08-12-2008, 23:43 Update-
Four Xmas's - Decent rom-com. Better than the critic reveiws that hammered it, slowed down a little to the end but I'm a fan of Vince and fancy Reece which helps!
Just what happened - I think it wanted to be the next 'Get shorty'. Quirky and a decent film. Didn;t sparkle or disappoint
Chalenging - Very good film although wont see again for a few years. Didn't make it too melodramatic as it could have been as AJ was a joy to watch.
The Express - Little known film that i really enjoyed. Not a American football fan so had my reservations but an uplifting film based on race.
The Children - Very poor! Very frustrating and not for me. Found it too unbelievable but i'm told it may become a cult classic. Not for me!
Lakeview Terrace - It was potentially very good but was just a decent film. SLJ is great cast in the role of a nutcase/anti-white neighbour and just as the film builds up momentum (to be a great film) it slows down again. Little too long for what it needed to be.
youwhatref 08-01-2009, 11:24 Update again :D
Twilight - Very slow moving film. Mentioned before, it is solely aimed at teenage girls as this is where the films faults mainly lies. It could have been more upbeat for me but it was still a decent film.
Australia - Another slow film but much more watchable. Another movie tackling the racism issues of the past, great lead roles and great scenery. Felt like two different films put together.
The Spirit - See the Turkey thread
Che Part One - I thin it does help to have some background knowledge and once again a slwo moving film that for me got better as it went on. Didn't feel they built on Che's personality much and feel the film is missing something.
The Reader - I enjoyed this! Very watchable again and another great history lesson.
There's five films out this week and looking forward to seeing them all in this order - Slumdog Millionairre, Defiance, Sex Drive, Role Models & Bride Wars. Good week hopefully.

Well - I enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire but not anywhere near as much as I enjoyed Defiance - best film I've seen in a long long time!
Not seen The Reader yet - but will be doing soon.......Role Models (not my kind of film....nor is Bride Wars)
I enjoyed 7 Pounds too - Will Smith back to his best!

Let us know what Defiance is like please! It looks pretty interesting, so I'd like a review before I go. :)
EdnaKrabappe 09-01-2009, 15:58 Saw Slumdog Millionaire on Wed 9.5/10. Thought it was an excellent film, the storytelling was ace, the cinematography was ace and the pace of the film was brilliant. Really loved it didn't look at my phone once even though it went off three times which is always the sign of a good film.

Just got back from this. My problem is that i read far too many reviews of it and too many raves about it so that i was really hyped up for the film! Therefore it took me a bit of time to get into it. (will stop reading too much in future!)
But a very good film which i think i'd enjoy more a second time. Purely a love story built round the premise of the Game show and very well done!
Fantastic film. Stunning visuals, fantastic storyline .. loved it!
youwhatref 15-01-2009, 21:32 Well i've finally got the fifth film of the week seen and must say a great week for film in general.
Started with Slumdog as mentioned above - 8/10
Sex Drive - Raucious teen comedy that did what it said on the tin. I loved American Pie, Road Trip, 40y/o virgin and recently Superbad. I'll add this to the list. It isn't great but was an enjoyable road movie which provided a few giggles and plenty of smiles. All of these type of films have the slapstick humour which works but also a good script which all of them keep going with the general love interest. - 8/10
Bride Wars - Seen a few bad reviews of this and after 30 mins i did have my doubts. I didn't really like either charachter to begin with and it was a standard film aimed at women. But the film did warm up towards the end which helped it redeem itself - 6.5/10
Defiance - True story based on the Jewish survival story in a forest set in Belarus. Focuses on ther two brothers mainly and their different opinions on how to stay alive against the Nazi's. Slow and steady film with the odd great battle scene. 7/10
Role Models - One of the films where the trailers do show you the main humourous bits of the film. Another 'what it said on the tin' films which agan got better as it went along. Provided plenty of smiles, odd cheesy moment and hot babe - 7.5/10
I saw a promo for Bronson last night and was tempted by it despite never having any previous interest in "real life" criminal biopics
EdnaKrabappe 17-01-2009, 01:22 I saw a promo for Bronson last night and was tempted by it despite never having any previous interest in "real life" criminal biopics
They are making a film about Mister Bronson:o? Well yeah I do blame him for Danny's illness and Zammo's drug addiction and the fact that Roland had to comfort eat. Should be a good one.
*Now has to tell self off for going off topic:rolleyes:* :hihi:
youwhatref 19-01-2009, 20:29 The Wrestler - Great! Micky Rouke has the lead to a tea and for me backed up by a very fit looking Marisa Tomei (?) whose charachters life is running in the same vein as The Wrestlers. Another slow moving that probably wont appeal to many and the wrestling scenes are great and painful to watch - 9/10
