View Full Version : The £35m West One development
I see it still hasn't opened yet - according to rumours it's 6 months late  According to my source the developers are now going to sue Gleeson for poor management. Here is the Gleeson project page:
http://www.mjgleeson.com/housing/case_histories/case_west_one.php
I also heard that they are opening a Budgens Supermarket in the centre of the development. While I think Budgens is okay, I'm surprised that a larger supermarket like Tesco or Sainsburys didn't steal the space. I also know that the popular "Vodka Revolution" bar is moving in to the premises.
Anyone else know much about this development? I accept rumours
I know that the architects have developed a building with an unusual arch shape that beautifully frames ... the Hallamshire Hospital! Though I'm sure anyone else who has walked up Division Street has noticed this already. I'm petitioning MacDonald hotels for a similar hole in the side of their Peace Gardens hotel (a hole that's preferably hotel sized... :-) )
This is completely true. They are opening the largest Bang and Olufsen shop in the country in there. They are also keeping the one on Ecclesall Road. Business must be going well!!!

I park on Devonshire Green everyday, always here the builders joking about how long the project is taking and all the problems that they keep having!!
Looks like part of it is finished though (the building with the gym I believe).
I heard the gym (or "The Cage") is opening in April? Anyone been to look around it?
I hear that the New Zing Vaa take away on Ecclesall Road are opening a noodle bar called East One.
Also the fine contemporary furniture and interior retailer PREGO are moving to West One from Victoria Quays.
Does anyone Know what "scale of Quality" would Budgens fit into... is it like Tesco/Safeway/Sainsbury's etc?
The Cage looks like you'll need recreational drugs to enjoy yourself there, it appears they are targetting those with pupils as big as their pecs. :D
El Duderino 09-03-2003, 18:51 Apparently Budgens will be in the M&S/Waitrose level of quality.

but what about size? is this like a metro store or supermarket?
Hmm, now it's opened I'd say more in the Spar level of quality ;)
The retail/leisure side of West One now seems about complete. Anyone know when the Revolution Bar opens?
I have bought an apartment in West One. It was due for completion Spring but has now been delayed, they are blaming the fire there a short time back. We received a letter today saying that our section will be completed target November worst case January. Some sections have been delayed until next March.
Answers to above questions :
a) Budgens is already open it is not a big place but reasonable.
b) Bar revolution is nearly complete.
c) Two restaurants are already open so is a coffee bar.
d) The noodle restaurant is nearly ready.
e) PREGO is nearly ready.
f) Some posh clothes shop (forgot the name) opened, got burgled and is due to re-open I believe.
g) The cage is delayed I think until November but not sure.
The whole thing is severely delayed and the fire is being blamed but it was behind schedule before the fire.
Personally I think it's looking good and should be a good addition to Sheffield
d) I thought I saw the Noodle bar having an opening night on Monday?
f) Burgled twice, on consecutive nights - see this (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1198)
As for the delay, my original post (at the top of this page) was posted in March. Even at that stage there were talks of the builders being sued for being so slow - so I wouldn't bank too much on the fire having anything to do with it ;)
mattgreen 18-07-2003, 17:58 Has anyone been to the bars/food places/shops in West One yet? What do you think of them?
We're buying a place in there but haven't had chance to look around yet.

Hi MAtt,
I live near West One and have been around the commercial area of the place. There is a Noodle Bar called 'the one'- which is quite nice, and Budgens is all right. Haven't tried anything else.
Regards,
Michael
bassman-x 29-07-2003, 21:23 I heard (from a reliable source) that the builders had not used proper insulation between the floors to save money so noise is going to travel between the flats loads.
I'd never move into one of these flats, overpriced poor quality [edited] the size of a shoebox imho.
I feel sorry for any of the people who have wasted their hard earned money on this [edited].
