I have a 10 month old cat at the moment and I'm not sure whether we should get another similar age cat for her to play with. She just seems to be quite lonely as when we come back from work she's absolutely crazy as she's been sleeping all day on her own so spends the rest of the night running around the house and when we go to bed she pulls up the carpet in the hall as I think she's just bored. I've never had a cat before so dont know whether this is normal but I just feel like it would be nice for her to have another cat to play with when we're not in. Another concern is whether our house is big enough to have 2 cats, its a 3 bed terrace so im not sure whether it will be ok to have two cats. and if she will even accept another cat in the house, is she too old now to let another cat into the house?

Any advice you could give to a novice cat owner would be appreciated!

I live in a 3 bed terrace. Along with..... husband, 5 kids, 1 german shepherd, 4 cats, 1 parrot and a shed full of rabbits  so i wouldn't be too worried about space. As for introducing your cat to another, I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon to give you some handy tips. I have mother cat and her 2 kittens, then shortly after, brought in another kitten so they were all used to each other from bein very young.

we also live in a small terrace and have a cat and a kitten. They have the run of the house (except for the lounge which they are only supposed to be in, if we are in), so there is plenty of space for them to have time out if they get fed up of each other.

Our cat is a rescue cat and he is 7 or 8 years old. We only had him a few weeks before the kitten arrived. They settled down fairly quickly.

Our two put their clogs on before running around the bedroom between 4-6am and the kitten's favourite thing at the moment is walking up and down your forehead if you don't wake up to give him some love at some unearthly hour.

I'd say go for it ! :D:D

thanks for the replies guys! i feel better now you think that my house would fit 2 cats as that was one of my main concerns against going for it. ive seen a cat that looks nice on the cat protection website but you have to have a home check and that sounds quite scary!

We had a dilemma the other day when we went to Thornberry. We have a 17 year old cat and a 19month old cat at home and were wondering what age of cat would fit in best with them. We didn't want another old one because the young one tends to bully the older one, but thought another younger one might bully the old one too. Anyway, we went for a 6 year old, so see how it goes!!

Definately go for it, they'll get on, it might just take a bit of time :)

Although cats are independent, they can be fantastic company for each other, as well as us. We have 5 and its fun to watch the little cliques that develop between them. Don’t be put off if they don’t seem to get on at first though. There will be a ‘bedding in’ period when the house rules are laid down between them, but they will sort themselves out, if not immediately, then very soon.

we introduced Feugo (she is partcailly sighted and other needs too) when she was 2 to a 7 week old kitten, she was fine although there were some hisses and growls they are now best friends , they sleep together, clean eachother, and eat each others food lol
I think its good for them to have a friend from the smae species.

We have 2 cats and we have a 3 bed terrace.
Our girl was 4 and we got a little tearaway ball of fur 13 weeks old. She was scared of him at first and we kept them separate for a while at night, but they are fine. He bullies her a bit actually!!
If you have a home check, i think they'll check if you live on a main road etc and garden/outside space.

If you feel you have the love, time n money for another cat.... GO FOR IT!!!

I used to foster for CP and home checks are not scary! They don't come to check your standard of housework or anything (thank goodness, or I'd have been forever catless!).

It's more about where the house is situated, eg: not good if it's on a main road (mine is, but I had a cat-proof garden) and, if there are children, whether they've been taught to respect animals or treat them like toys. Also, if you've got the "perfect" house with silk curtains and hundreds of knick knacks, and you've never had a cat before, to see if you realise what the little beggars can do to your home!!

Over the years, I've introduced numerous cats (permanent and temporary) to each other, there's usually some jockeying for position and perhaps a bit of fur flying, but they usually settle down in time. The only time I would be dubious of introducing a new cat is if you had an old, settled cat, who had become used to being on its own for 15-20 years, then you might more problems. But yours is nice and young and would probably appreciate a playmate.

we had our home check during the middle of building work - there was barely any floor in the kitchen and only enough space for one of us to sit down in the living room but the man from delmonty still said yes
