Do any of you regularly read any film magazines?

I used to subscribe to Total Film, but then bought a copy of Empire a while back and much prefered it, so I now subscribe to that. There's a good preview of films to come over the Winter in the current issue :thumbsup:

I used to subscribe to Empire, but cancelled a couple of years back as the writing style went seriously downhill (not to mention the reviews - Kill Bill was given 3/5 yet the review stated it would be a 4 or 5 but "Tarantino films are measured by a different yardstick". Utter nonsense - a good film is good regardless of the director. I dread what they say about Spielberg films these days as Schindlers List was a masterpiece so all his other films must be 1/5 in comparison) The final straw for me with Empire was the Star Wars edition with the 'breathing vader cover'. How old are the age group the mag aims for? 5? 65 pages of that issue were took up with Star Wars stuff, despite them dedicating 10 pages for each issue previous on the run-up. If I wanted to read Star Wars Monthly, I would. Also Empire's obsession with Top 50 Best...... charts is worse than Channel 4! I think the fact the Bourne films get voted as 'Best of the Year' these days at the Awards shows the readership of the mag.

I still subscribe to Total Film, and have done since issue 2. Back in the day TF offered the 'films with explosions - woohoo' take on articles and reviews, and Empire was the more serious. Over the past decade they have all become the same, with all the same articles etc. I find I read less an less of TF each month now, and it is only a matter of time before I ditch that too. By the time the mags come out I already know all the news thanks to the web (which you can read TF and Empire's latest reviews and news there first if you wish), so it just seems a waste of cash.


Genre mag wise i read SFX and Death Ray. Of the two Death Ray is the one I read everything from cover to cover (and have had letters printed in 6 of the 13 issues so far) SFX gets about 3/4 read.

I'm not going into too much detail but prefer TotalFilm over Empire.

Total Film's the mag for me, good online forum too.

I've never bought Total Film, I buy Empire at the moment.

I buy sight and sound because I think it makes me looks err clever like. I don't really always understand it though and so I also sneak a peak at empire too though they seem to give everything spielberg ever does 5 stars which is annoying

I'm currently a subscriber to Empire.

I think the Subscribers cover they did in memory of Heath Ledger was just the most fitting tribute to him.
