Did anybody else watch the new Sport Mastermind programme on BBC2 tonight? It's got the makings of a good 10-part series, but I thought Des Lynam was awful as the presenter.

It was as though somebody had said: Right, we'll give you so much money, sit down there and this is what you say. He didn't come over with any enthusiasm whatsoever, and just seemed to be rattling everything off as quickly as he could in a really monotonous voice.

I could only stand it for about a minute. Either the autocue was going too quickly for him or he can't read. I just don't think he's any good at scripted stuff

I quite like the idea, as a sports fan, but it does smack of "What can we do to fill TV slots up in the summer?".

You're spot on there. I remember seeing him chairing Have I Got News for You a while back, and that's just what I thought then. He just seemed out of his depth. My opinion was confirmed a week later when Bruce Forsyth was in the chair - absolutely hilarious. I'm not saying I could do either job any better, but then I'm not a highly paid television presenter.

Is Lynam ill? That's how he came across last night.
