Seems a little strange as we used to have full marathons some years ago.

The route on the http://www.sheffieldmarathon.com seems a little lame.

Obviously Sheffield's quite hilly in places but a route up through London Rd, Millhouses etc or maybe out towards Meadowhead, Gleadless, Mosborough areas or use Penistone Road out to Middlewood. All quite flat areas.

Or perhaps the organisers were worried they wouldn't get enough entries to the full marathon?

Thoughts?

I'm not sure of the exact reason why they abolished the full Sheffield Marathon but I do have a feeling that it was because there was not enough entrants to warrant keeping roads closed for the most of the day.

I ran the full Sheffield a couple of times and noted that they always seemed to use the same circuit for the full marathon as the half but two laps instead of one. On the second lap round runners were few and far between and all the supporters had gone home. The last time I did the full marathon in Sheffield there were less than 300 runners doing the full, most people only bothered with the half.

Been thinking about this.

Why don't they keep the half as it is but rather than jut do 2 laps for the full which it has to be said would be a little boring continue the route to a full marathon distance.

They could go up ecclesall road and out towards fox house but take the right hand turn before that takes you up to ringinglow and the round house.

Then turn back down ringinglow road then back down ecclesall road to hunters bar.

They may have to add a little on to make it the full 26 miles but it should not cause a problem.

It would make it a more difficult race but a lot more interesting and I bet more people would be interested than just doing the 2 laps.

Also it would allow the half to run as it is at present.
