United and Wednesday Come Together

For Derek Dooley Memorial Match

England and Germany Legends, who will meet at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane Stadium on the evening of Thursday August 7th live on ITV4, will play for the honour of lifting The Derek Dooley Memorial Cup, it has been announced.

The trophy marks a fitting tribute to a man equally revered on either side of the Sheffield football divide. Born and bred in the steel city, Dooley, who passed away on March 5th of this year, earned the respect and admiration of United and Wednesday supporters on and off the pitch.

England Legends Manager Peter Reid confirmed: “It is great news that we’re playing for the Derek Dooley Memorial Cup. I met Derek Dooley on a number of occasions, most memorably while I was manager of Sunderland. We played Sheffield United in the Championship play-off semi-final games in 97-98 and I remember chatting to him in the boardroom after both games. Derek Dooley was a lovely fella, a real gentlemen who was gracious in victory and defeat. Not only that, given what happened to him when a brilliant playing career was cut short, he was also obviously a very brave and resilient man. I hope we do him proud against Germany.”

Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe said: “Derek was one of Sheffield’s soccer legends so it is appropriate that these two illustrious teams should be playing for a trophy in honour of Derek’s remarkable career in football.”

Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws added: “The name of Derek Dooley is legendary on both sides of Sheffield and that says everything about the man. The Derek Dooley Memorial Cup is a fitting tribute and all of us here at Sheffield Wednesday are delighted to support the England v Germany Legends game at Bramall Lane on August 7th.”

Derek’s widow, Sylvia, said: “Derek would have been honoured to see his name on this trophy. He personally knew a lot of the English players likely to be playing or involved in the match.”

The Legends: England v Germany – The Derek Dooley Memorial Cup is being played to aid The Red Cross China Earthquake Appeal. Broadcast live on ITV4, the fixture marks the second game in a three-game summer 2008 Legends Series. In May, the England Legends kicked off their summer schedule with a 2-0 win over Scotland at St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, thanks to goals from Stan Collymore and Steve Hodge. The England Legends will face the Irish Legends later this summer. England and Germany Legends previously met in the summer of 2006, Germany running out 4-2 winners.

Tickets for The Legends: England v Germany – The Derek Dooley Memorial Cup are £10 for adults (over 16) and £5 for children/OAPs, plus booking fee and available by visiting the Bramall Lane box office, calling Sheffield United on 0871 222 1889 or visiting the Sheffield United website.

A fitting tribute with reasonable prices at the turn-styles.

I hope many turn out and make this a great occasion.

Anyone know where I can watch ITV4 in Orlando?!!

I'm looking forward to watching the game tonite. Last nite, ITV4 did a build up for it, and said some lovely things about Derek.
A great chance for Sheffield to come together!!

Apart from when Wednesday fans were threatened by United fans for support the England Legends (Chris Woods, Des Walker, Viv Anderson & Andy Sinton).

Hardly any policing, stewards were about as much use as chocolate fireguards, some I know left early.

So not a fitting tribute for the man that allegedly could unite both sets of fans, me thinks not.
