I used to know how to do this in Windows 98, but since I've swtiched to XP I have forgotten.

I have too many shortcuts on my desktop screen and would like to remove them without creating orphans etc.

i know this is a very fundamental question, but i would be grateful for a reply

Thank you Vidster. I thought of this but thought it was too easy to be unproblematic -

Won't I get messages when i clean my system about missing shortcuts etc?

If you delete a shortcut on your desktop it will not change any part of a program you have.
Windows XP will inform you of this and derect you to Add/Remove programs if you want to remove it.
Apart from that XP won't do anything ;)

Can run desktop cleanup wizard to chose what icons remain on your desktop with Windows XP!!

It automatically shows you the date the program was last used and files away any discarded icons to a folder so they can easily be restored at a later date if required!!

right click anywhere on desktop, then click arrange icons by....then select run desktop cleanup wizard!!!
