Today we took our two children (4 & 6 year olds) to practice on their bikes behind Don Valley stadium. I was looking forward to showing them the stainless steel sundial that stands there as a tribute to Harry Brearley the Sheffield man who invented stainless steel. Unfortunately it has been completely vandalised and is now useless as both a working sundial and as a monument to the proud achievements of our city. Congratulations to the idiots who did this and who have no pride in the heritage of our great city.

Sad to hear about the vandalism-----just about sums life up for a lot of Sheffielders these days.
I know this is a bit off the subject but Harry Brearley's daughter was our school secretary , at least from 1953-1958.
I don't know about before or after those years. It's quite probable that she's still going strong. It would be interesting to find out from anyone.
Incidentally , I hope I've got my facts right about it all. It's a long time ago but I'm sure that's what the Headmaster told us. At any rate , her name was definitely Miss Brearley.
I think we all should email the Council to ensure that Harry Brearley is included in the proposed 'Sheffield Hall of Fame'
