The new version of Beat It by Panic! At the Disco.

It was bad enough when they played their own songs at me without ruining a classic such as this...

I heard top ranking toss metal band Disturbed do a cover of a Phil Collins song the other day. Awaful.

Pop Idol winnner Lennox Lewis's karaoke butchering of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", a song made famous by Roberta Flack's definitive version.

Anything ever covered by Boyzone, Westlife or Ronan Keating. 'Love Me For a Reason', 'Mandy' and 'Words' were perfectly fine, slightly camp slabs of 70s nostalgia before these putrescent boy bands soiled them with their over-emoting blandness.

Ronan Keating should be shot for his cover of 'Iris', and I can only assume Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens was facing a large tax bill when he agreed to record 'Father and Son' with him.

Oh yeah, and their version of Shout by Lulu wasn't the most amazing piece of musical genius I've ever heard either.

In fact it was bloody shocking!

Some would say the Lulu's version of Shout was bloody shocking in comparison to the original version by The Isley Brothers.

Having acquired a four track over the weekend, I'd also like to contribute the cover of Bill Tarmey's hit Grandad that I'm going to record tonight.

Actually Clive Owen, of Dad's Army fame did the original "Grandad" song back in the early 70s iirc.

Jack Duckworth's version was itself, a cover.

Onto bad cover versions... I personally cannot forgive Will Young for ruining The Doors' classic Light My Fire, but then Will Young is overrated tosh anyway (and no, not because he bats for the other side (is gay)), and as mentioned ALL of the Westlife cover versions, ESPECIALLY their version of "Mandy", the original is one of my fave songs EVER, them Irish lads want shooting for ruining it IMO.

If I ever had the opportunity though, I'd love to record an album of me doing cover versions of Meatloaf songs, of course I'd donate at least half the profits to work as they're a Charity in need of fund raising at the moment, but beside that I reckon it would be a laugh!

4 Rolf Harris - Bohemian Rhapsody
5 Mae West - Twist And Shout
6 Pat Boone - Paradise City
7 Hayseed Dixie - Fat Bottomed Girls
8 Duran Duran - Come Up And See Me

10 Danny La Rue - Copacobana

They are all really bad except Fat Bottomed Girls which I don't mind actually.:loopy:

Robson and Jerome singing .... well, feebly attempting to sing ... Unchained Melody.

Actually, pretty much anyone attempting to sing Unchained Melody. I've never heard a cover that was anything other than disastrous.

I also remember a young girl once on TV, didn't know her name then or since ... she had a beautiful, pure, sweet, angelic-sounding voice .. and was singing "House of the Rising Sun." :loopy:

Paul Shane? As in 'Hi Di Hi' Paul Shane? Christmas novelty record presumably.

The William Shatner 'Common People' is fantastic! He does a sort of lyrics narration while the wonderful Joe Jackson gets the singing credits. It has the added bonus of Ben Folds on keyboards too.

Hayseed Dixie do great versions of Green Day's 'Holiday' and J Geils Band's 'Centrefold'.

I sincerely hope that you realise it was shout by Tears for Fears they covered and not the Lulu version as you reckon you've heard it.
The Phil Collins song they covered was Land Of Confusion.
Both not good.

I've just heard a cover of "Hungry Like The Wolf" originally done by Duran Duran. The cover is by a band called Black Light Burns (Wes Borland ex of Limp Bizkit is lead singer). I cringed.

What made it worse is the original artists played backing vocalists!

Indeed, it's a little known fact that the song "Grandad" was co-written by TV host Clive Anderson and Clive Sinclair, who later found fame as the inventor of the C5 car and the VIC-20 computer. Clive Dunn of course sang the song, with a young Clive Owen playing his grandson in the video.

Although it sounds strange that all the people involved shared the same first name, the whole project was actually conceived at the annual social weekend of the National Clive Society (NCS), an organisation set up by former Beach Boy Brian Wilson in 1971.

Hope that helps!

I think you will find that the VIC-20 computer was invented by Commodore who's founder a Mr Ritchie later went on to form a funk/soul band with a few ex employees and had a moderately successful time and a few hits including Once, Twice Three Times a Lady, a tribute to his head of statistical research at Commodore.

Hope that helps a little more.

Back on topic.

The sheer gut wrenching awfulness of Westlife's crucifixion of Michael Buble's Home should be classified as a crime against humanity.

Girls Aloud 'I think we're alone now' and it was them what murdered 'Eternal flame' an all. G4 doing ANYTHING. Er... Disturbed are an unashamedly gimmick group so I kind of forgive them (a bit). Will Young's 'Light my fire' was awful as well.

And there was a glut of dance 'remakes' that just stuck an annoying synth drum-beat over any half decent song... that trend killed me for a few months. Then I stopped listening to the radio.

Back in about 1982, Kevin the Gerbil, of Roland Rat fame, "covered" Summer Holiday by Cliff Richard... OK I bought the record (forgive me, I was only 6 and did not know any better  ) but even to a 6 year old that song was annoying after about the third listen! Especially the B-side containing "Reggie", Roland Rat's "nephew" banging on about a Holiday in Minehead!
