View Full Version : Need to lose 2 stone before August. Help please!!!
I've decided to take part in a charity event in August for the Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice. The event is a tandem skydive (with instructor attached) but the maximum weight they allow is 14st/89kg. Currently I'm 16st/102kg and I need to lose the weight in about 3 months. Obviously there's money to raise as well and that's a minimum of £380 to be able to do the jump so I'll be asking people around work etc for sponsor money. I have just joined a gym and have been today to get my program sorted out but I also need to get a diet program going so that I can get rid of the weight.
Any suggestions anyone as I'm terrible at dieting and have no idea what to eat/what not to apart from the obvious chips, burgers, chocolate etc.
Serious suggestions only please.
If that's not a red rag to a bull I don't know what is.
Have you thought about joining a slimming club? WeightWatchers seems to work for most people.
Good luck!
Join weight watchers.. you can eat what you want if you use a point system,.. i once lost 1 and a 1/2 stone on that diet.. but i also walked about 7km 3 times a week (on a treadmill) !
I would always check with a doctor first though as you dont want to be underweight for your height or lose weight too fast.
Eat less + exercise more = weight loss
GOOD LUCK WITH THE SKYDIVE!
evildrneil 17-04-2005, 18:23 Avoid too much weight training (muscle is much heavier than fat!) but make sure you do some - especially the big three of squats, deadlifts and bench presses maybe with cleans and presses thrown in for good measure.
Don't crash diet - you will loose muscle preferentially over fat and you basal metabolic is roughly proportional to your lean muscle mass.
Drink plenty of water - aim for at least 2 liters a day.
One day every couple of weeks go of your diet and splurge - it will help stop your metabolism adapting to a low calorie diet.
Go do some boxing or kick-boxing a couple of times a week - you will get fit lighter and knackered very quickly!!!
Ive tried them all and still think slimming world is the best.
couldn,t cope with weight watchers as when youve had your 20 points or whatever then thats your lot.
maybe im just a hog though.
if you don't like going to a slimming club try www.weightlossresources.co.uk you get a three day free trial to see if you like it.
Good Luck
start riding on a bike to work everyday its nice weather, if it's no further than the city centre you shouldn't get too sweaty being mostly downhill on the way (i think..?), and then you'll have a good workout on the way back home. Will help raise your metabolism (horrible word) and help keep whatever weight you lose to stay off..
good luck anyway and well done, I'd love to go skydiving one day..
Cut out carbohydrates. I lost 1 1/2 stone in 6 weeks by not eating bread or potatoes.
I agree with whomever mentioned not doing too much weight training, muscle does weigh more and obviously your after loosing weight... stick to mostly aerobic exercises, cycling, running, rowing etc... cut out the crap the best you can, but you can stick to eating meats as long as they aren't fatty burgers or fatty pork chops etc...
Personally I'm still of the mind that dieting is a lot more of the getting off your ass and exercising to burn the fat... I find it weird how people think they can eat salad's all day and loose weight... how do they think they're going to burn fat if they're not pushing their body to sweat its ass off? :P
2 stone in 3 months is do-able, most likely... personally if you've just joined a gym get some proffesional advice from them if you can... they'll be able to help show you which machines to use and what exercises, and maybe even suggest diet changes :)
Well Pauly.. I made the decision to lose weight..was around the 14st mark and needed to lose it for myself, I used my mountain bike...
It took some motivation but after a month I was doing 12 - 15 miles a night and enjoying the pain ! Then the best bit was the 4 cans of beer at the end !
am now down at 11 and a half stone and feeling blooming good.. the (bit) fat I had has been replaced by muscle (so I am told ;) )
No one regime is good for everyone...just that this worked for me
GOOD LUCK !
Cheers people. I just had a long chat with MissBrum's other half as I've known them both for a little while and he's sorted me out with a proven sensible eating plan. Clever bugger. :D
Will see how this goes for a bit. Cheers for the advice so far. :)
Eat less, exercise more. I don't understand why people find it so difficult.

Agreed.
More exercise and less carbs should see you right. Try to avoid having big meals, spread your food intake into small portions through out the day. Its been said before but avoid doing weights, this will only make you heavier.
Good luck with the sky diving!
muddycoffee 17-04-2005, 22:54 Pauly,
I would say that 2 stone in 3 months is a too much for a healthy weight loss. I once had a diet race in my late 20s with a girl at work who was getting married. I lost 1 and a half stones in 2 or three months. I was around 15 stones to start with at 6'2".
I ate strictly healthy and low fat food. And walked for 3 or 4 hours a night and 4-6 hours at weekends. I continued my usual alcohol drinking regime. The weight fell of me but I didn't feel well at all. If I were to do it again I would halve my expectations. I got occasional dizzy spells and couldn't sleep at all due to low blood sugar. Medium term I felt weak and was worried that I had done some permanent damage to my heart but I put that down to paranoya.
Kristian 17-04-2005, 23:10 I'm quiet worried that nobody has asked Pauly how tall he is. The max weight may well be 14st, but this is 7lb under my ideal weight! To lose 2 stones in 4 months seems like a tall order to me, although I have lost weight far more rapidly in the past. That said, I have also sufferred from eating disorders in the past, and would advise caution!
My advice would be to see your GP, and decide what kind of weight you should be aiming for, and then take his/her advice on a healthy eating / exercise plan.
Good luck Pauly!

I've noticed the difference Max! Well done! Might try this myself - but first just must have some toast and butter!
I lost 1 stone in about 2 - 3 weeks simply by eating less. I didn't feel dizzy or particularly that hungry, and I wasn't overweight to begin with but it was up after Xmas.
I'm 6'1 Kristian. I've had a chat with a friend who has used this particular system before and I will actually be eating more than I currently do but more often. The idea is that you eat every 3 hours (not huge meals) and it keeps your metabolism going constantly so it's burning fat all the time and nothing gets stored like it would if you had a big meal in the evening.
It makes sense to me and a friend of my mother's also tried this and it worked for them so I'm going to give that a go. If it doesn't work for me then I may try something else but you never know til you try.
14st may well be under weight for me as I have quite a large frame (44" chest) but we'll see. I'll get some advice as to what my ideal weight would be just so that some of you can sleep easier.
GimmeSomePK 18-04-2005, 08:06 Doesn't sound like you're hugely overweight for your height to start with, and i'm a little worried by some of the suggestions so far. A few of my thoughts:
1. Losing weight for any reason other than your health is unhealthy. This includes for a bet, a competition, a charity etc.
2. Being "on a diet" is not good for you in the long run, you will not maintain weight loss once you stop the diet. Don't go "on a diet" CHANGE your diet. Do you plan to eat every 3 hours for the rest of your life? No.
3. Your body needs carbs. Potatoes, rice, pasta etc. are not evil. A lot of the weight lost through low-carb diets is water.
4. Muscle is heavier than fat. But MUCH better for you. Use a tape measure or %body fat to measure your weight loss. (GP or some gyms will be able to arrange body composition tests.)
5. MOVE! run, dance, swim, walk, stand up... damnit!!
6. Ok i know i'm getting carried away now, but these 5 portions of fruit and veg... have a glass of fruit juice every day, even the posh freshly squeezed stuff costs less than a beer.
I'll stop now. But happy to expand/discuss etc on anyones comments.

Ive lost 4 stones in the last 10 months and it was easy. I was fed up of my way of life, not active enough in my job, too many hours at work, crappy snack foods, not eating my main meal until late evening- just the usual perils of running your own business. One day my blood pressure check read 212 over 105 and I weighed nearly 18 stones. That was it - business closed, more active job found and crappy foods thrown in the bin. 10 months later Im down to 13 st 11 and blood pressure down to 140 over 80. All without the miracle diets or Weightwatchers.
Anyone heard of the African plant HOODIA ? suppose to curb the appetite all day, the hunters use it while there off hunting all day long, it's only grown in certain parts of africa and getting very popular in diet suppliments but they say nothing like taking a bite of the real plant itself.

Have a leg amputated ?
Seriously, you need excercise and a good diet, anything else won't work.
What is boring food in your opinion then? :)

Anything that doesn't fight back.
Do you drink much? Alcohol piles on the pounds. But it's such fun.
Why is it all life's pleasures are so bad for you??
I don't drink too much.; It tends to be indoors with the other half as it's cheaper all round. It's mostly the weekends though. Nothing serious and we don't get hammered. Just merry. :D
If I keep up the gym work it shouldn't make too much difference.....I hope ;)
