View Full Version : Blades have £10 Million for this season for new players
bladesufc1 07-07-2008, 07:58 SHEFFIELD United have assembled a multi-million pound war chest designed to catapult the club back into the Premier League.
The Star understands that the majority of the £10m plc chairman Kevin McCabe recently proposed to make available at Bramall Lane has been earmarked for the playing squad

Is "assembled" a euphemism for "borrowed" or has McCabe actually donated the money this time?

That's a definite then.
eyretile 07-07-2008, 12:59 Is "assembled" a euphemism for "borrowed" or has McCabe actually donated the money this time?
Surely the ability to be able do either is the important thing here.
Bladesman 07-07-2008, 18:37 If thats true then its great but it wont explain why we are argueing with Wigan over paying an extra 500k for Cotterill.
I dont think we actually need to spend £10mil on players Id say we only need to spend half of that on our squad anyway.
freyasdad 07-07-2008, 18:48 I think this figure is possible to find the new Michael Brown that Blackwell is looking for because he won't be cheap.
Earwiggo 08-07-2008, 16:30 Is that the 'great' Michael Brown of Wigan?
Is he as big a legend as your current legend, 4th and 3rd division star Brian deane?:D

Didn't do too bad in destroying you mugs now did he?
He's no Paul Stancliffe that's for sure.
freyasdad 08-07-2008, 17:00 He's no Paul Stancliffe that's for sure.
No but lets have a rational think about this then.
I suspect he is the highest ever goalscorer from midfield that any team in Sheffield has ever had.
So if this is true then he is a legend.
I think I called him a legend when he fluffed that penalty at Cardiff.
Average player (at the top level) who had a great season at United.
But (and this is not a dig) United haven't had that many great players over the last 30 years so I can understand how fans look back.

I would suggest the fluffing of penalties is the last subject you should be raising, taking into account that SWFC legend Waddle making a total bollacks and being hated by the nation. :hihi:
Yeah, he wasn't a patch on Lord Michael Brown was he?
little_m 08-07-2008, 19:03 Yeah, he wasn't a patch on Lord Michael Brown was he?
Browny can sleep easy every night knowing his career will not be defined by one monumental cock-up, a cock-up so bad that the nation as one muttered 'What a ****'. :hihi:
little_m 08-07-2008, 19:18 What a numpty.
Yes, he was a 'numpty' skying that pen. :hihi:
discodown 08-07-2008, 19:25 But (and this is not a dig) United haven't had that many great players over the last 30 years so I can understand how fans look back.Waddle and possibly Des Walker aside how many truly great Wednesday players have there been over the last 30 years? I mean nationally renowned players
bladebloke 08-07-2008, 19:25 Yes, he was a 'numpty' skying that pen. :hihi:
i can eventually forgive a player for missing a pen. what i cant forgive is taking the p*** afterwards by making a pizza advert and making more money whilst laughing at the english fans who spent their hard earnt going to support him. it was just a joke to him. no shame.

He did a good deal on the ads though, Pizza for life apparently. Judging by the look of the fat get he's filled his boots. :hihi:

Cantona...........ooops. Ballsed that one up didn't they. :hihi:
Waddle and possibly Des Walker aside how many truly great Wednesday players have there been over the last 30 years? I mean nationally renowned players
I reckon I could name at least 20 Wednesday players (probably more) who have been better than Michael Brown. And if you named a combined Sheffield team of the last 30 years I don't think a United player would make the 11.
Who was it who nearly signed Maradonna?
discodown 08-07-2008, 19:33 I reckon I could name at least 20 Wednesday players (probably more) who have been better than Michael Brown. And if you named a combined Sheffield team of the last 30 years I don't think a United player would make the 11.I would disagree completely. I think theres an excellent chance a united player would make a combined sheffield team or it wouldn't be a combined sheffield team. It would be the best Wednesday team of the last 30 years.
The question wasn't can you name any Wednesday players better than michael brown, thats a given. I can name 20 united players better than Micheal Brown. The question was truly great Wednesday players on a national stage
NERVY-OWL 08-07-2008, 19:35 how do define a great player though, we all have players at our clubs we would class a legends. aswell as walker and waddle i would put hirst, sheridan and pressman aswell. those are players from my era, cant comment on players before that.
discodown 08-07-2008, 19:36 Who was it who nearly signed Maradonna? We did. As big an error as signing Cantona and letting him go.

What a complete and utter pile of sh*t that statement is.
NERVY-OWL 08-07-2008, 19:45 i would agree waddle and walker then, other than them i would struggle. but the same goes with utd, obviously brown wouldnt count and i wouldnt know about other utd players
What a complete and utter pile of sh*t that statement is.
Which bit?
And you name a Sheffield team of the last 30 years and I will. Might be later though.
Di Canio will be partnering Hirst though so don't even think about Donkey Deane.
little_m 08-07-2008, 19:49 Who was it who nearly signed Maradonna?
Maradona was 17 year old unknown at the time.
Cantona was an established but troubled 26 year old who's played under Beckenbauer at club level, won the French title, won the European U21 Championship and went to Marseilles for a record fee.
The fact Francis was, like the supporters thick he insulted Cantona by only offering an extension to his trial. He went to L**ds and the rest my porky little chum is history.

hirst swfc played 294 scored 106 , england played 3 scored 1 .
deane sufc played 222 scored 94 , england played 3 scored 0, also scored for leeds benfica ,middleborough and west ham . deane edges it .

Jesus wept.
If you are going to say that Brian Deane was a better player than David Hirst then you are seriously deluded.
I don't think any of the other Blades on here would even support that.

Makes no difference porky, the stats speak for themselves but then again the fact you LOST two cup finals in the same year seems to be a badge of honour for most of the swine so stats mean nothing to your lot.
And Jesus probably did weep at that pen miss by Waddle :hihi:
Brian Deane scored a lot of goals in the third division.
little_m 08-07-2008, 20:15 Brian Deane scored a lot of goals in the third division.
I think you need to have a look at the stats pal, he played one season in Div 3 with United. One in Div 2 and the rest in Old Div1/Prem before going to Leeds and scoring 32 in the Premiership for them.
alex3659 08-07-2008, 20:23 david hirst's goals for wednesday were not all in the top flight either .

Too much of a hot headed temperamental pig for any team of mine.
You telling me Alan Kelly isn't the best keeper this city has seen in the last 30 years ???????
Jesus look at that, I've started in the keepers position and its 1-0 United already and you said no Blade would be in the starting 11 of a Sheffield side :hihi::hihi::hihi:
DiCanio wouldn't even make my team.
You're going to put Dane Whitehouse in aren't you? :D

Sounds like one of those Wednesday massive club brain dead proponents.
If you're going to have a dig at United at least be true to youself and don't post a denial right off the bat.
canadablade 08-07-2008, 22:46 But (and this is not a dig) United haven't had that many great players over the last 30 years so I can understand how fans look back.
And starting to look like its swings and roundabouts because its wendys turn because they have had no great players or even decent players for the past 10 years now :hihi:
What has all the bickering who had the best players 30 odd years ago got to do with the original post, can we get back to the original post.
Sheffield United are said to be tracking MK Dons midfielder Keith Andrews according to the Milton Keynes local newspaper...
The Dublin born midfielder is set to join the Blades for around £1.5 million says sources close to the Dons. The 27 year old claims he is too good for third tier football and wants a move away from Stadium MK.
Earwiggo 09-07-2008, 10:37 You MUST include the Blades legends, the 3rd division's Brian Deane and Keith Edwards.
Our 3rd division legend was Terry Curran. He wouldn't get in Wednesday's first 11 of the last 30 years, and probably not in a squad of 22.
Donkey Deane on the other hand is your first choice!!!
Think about it Blades, your outclassed in ALL departments.
I'd find another thread to post on, as you are completely out of your depth on this one.:hihi:

This thread has nothing to do with old players from either side ,it's about how much McCabe has given Blackwell for transfers.

I apologise, I won't do it again.

Tongue and £1 million to wigan, with brown and cotterill coming the other way is what im hearing.

EW I wouldn't do something like that,it's that a lot of threads end up losing the original story line & it get's a bit confusing.Cheers Tosh13
According to the DM Eagles may be going to Burnley for £1m if he is available I would snap Man Utd's hand off ,he is a quality player.

but all these super stars (that outclassed us in all departments) you had earpiggo still could'nt win at bramall lane and could'nt stop donkey deane scoring against them and could do nothing to prevent another derby double for us. you have tricky trevors super stars we'll stick with harrys basement bargains. ooo ahhh bob booker.

Earwiggo 09-07-2008, 16:51 It's off thread BB, (I've said I won't interfere.... except to say....
So you now admit Deane was a donkey.... AT LAST!
And in 1979, Ian Mellor, Terry Curran, Jeff king and Mark Smith scored in a 4-0 win over 'top of the table' Sheffield United.
Does this make these 4 players great? No it doesn't.
But two of 'em were better than Deane.
Sorry Tosh, but this post needed answering.

There's not many pages in that book you're reading old boy!
'Derby double', 'through his legs' and 'collecting tins'.
Riveting reading!
Try some Enid Blyton.
Oh sod it I give up,Dane Whitehouse was a class player ,L***s were going to sign him for £1.5m before his knee injury ,but Dane turned them down anyway & Deano was a great center forward scoring the 1st goal in the PL.
Earwiggo 10-07-2008, 00:15 Deane was only 'great' at United in the 3rd and 4th divisions.
He wasn't revered at the other clubs he played for.
Great players don't move on that often, they go to a big club and stay there.

As i never saw Springett or Hodgkinson play no comment
Right Back - Len Badger (again, i never saw him play)
NIGEL PEARSON - BAAAHHAAHAHAHAHHAAHHAAHAHAH, he was ok for a mule, not even a patch on Jagielka (played most of his time in the PL as Centre Back, plays Centre Back for Everton most of last season and played Centre Back for England.
Waddle or Woodward - Woodward
Sheridan or Hockey - Hockey
Divison 3 strikers, what Deano????!??!!?!?!? hahahahaha!! he played 1 season in the old 3rd and one season in the old Second.....hardly a division 3 striker is he. Does that make Les Ferdinand a 3rd Division striker as well then?
Who scored the first ever PL goal?

1/ How many games for ANY club did Donkey play in the Premier League?
2/ How many goals did Donkey score (in total) in the PL?
It's probably 1. the same one that you all go bangin' on abaht, 'cause it were the first scored in the PL. Wow! What an accolade! Mark Bright (not our best ever striker) scored lots more than DD, and ALL in the PL.
Les Ferdinand played 99% of his football in the PL. From around 23 years old, through to retirement, so no, he wasn't a 3rd division (or second) player. He gained many England caps as well. Donkey got ..... caps? Was it 1?
Was it Donkey that put the ball through Woods' legs in a derby match?
How many times have United 'done the double' over Wednesday? I can't remember.
Any luck with those collecting tins yet? .. We could be needing them.

some people on here like to stir the crap up and when you tell em what you think of them and a few home truths , they go running to mummy the mod .
Stockers 10-07-2008, 09:40 Quote from Stockers (who really ought to know better)
Waddle or Woodward - Woodward
Sheridan or Hockey - Hockey
Like I said, case dismissed.
Its called an opinion Earwiggo, we all have, it just so happens most of yours are wrong!!
Stockers 10-07-2008, 09:58 1/ How many games for ANY club did Super Deano play in the Premier League?
286
2/ How many goals did Donkey score (in total) in the PL? 71 - One more than Eric Cantona and 21 more than Mark Bright
It's probably 1. the same one that you all go bangin' on abaht, 'cause it were the first scored in the PL. Wow! What an accolade! Mark Bright (not our best ever striker) scored lots more than DD, and ALL in the PL - no he didn't :hihi:
Les Ferdinand played 99% of his football in the PL. From around 23 years old, through to retirement, so no, he wasn't a 3rd division (or second) player. Deano spent 1 season in the 3rd and one in the second - do you have a point? You called him a 3rd Division Striker?
Deano also spent the majority of his career in the PL with us, Leeds and Boro
He gained many England caps as well. Super Deano got ..... caps? Was it 1? no 3, same as David Hirst
Was it Super Deano that put the ball through Woods' legs in a derby match? Yes, SWEET
How many times have United 'done the double' over Wednesday? I can't remember - i recall 2 in my life time
Any luck with those collecting tins yet? .. We could be needing them - rattle rattle.
You're too easy Earwiggo, you spout off without any knowledge or stats to back up what you're saying. Once again i've proved you wrong on every point you raised in the above message.
Earwiggo 10-07-2008, 10:04 Its called an opinion Earwiggo, we all have, it just so happens most of yours are wrong!!
The international team managers wrong as well then?
Stockers 10-07-2008, 10:08 The international team managers wrong as well then?
I'm sure if Len Badger would have been Swedish and Trevor Hockey had been Irish they'd both have won a lot of caps for their respective countries.
How many caps did Pearson, Waddle and Des Walker win during their time at Hillsborough?
Earwiggo 10-07-2008, 10:11 Big clubs in bold type.
Gazza - Newcastle, Spurs, Lazio, He played 2 minutes each for:
Everton, Middlesborough, Burnley, etc
Owen - Liverpool and Newcastle ... (2 minutes for Madrid)
Rush - Liverpool (and when past it) Leeds, Blades
Deane - Blades (and 2 minutes at Leeds, Benfica, Boro, West Ham)
Earwiggo 10-07-2008, 10:15 Please can you provide a link to DD's PL stats?

hahahaha - you really are a plank Earwiggo, just when i'd found the Holy Grail (A pig fan i can hold a sensible conversation with), you do this to me.
Gazza - 2 minutes at Everton and Boro?????? Oh and i missed Rangers.
Deano - so you're proving your own point, he only played for one big Club. 2 minutes at Leeds - 4 SEASONS - hahaha!!!

So DD got 1 goal in every 4 games. Around 10 a season.
How long was he at L***s and Boro?
Who mentioned David Hirst?
And you managed to miss out Owen and Rush in your summary.
And I could have mentioned DD's 2 minutes at Benfica, Boro and West Ham too, but didn't.
So DD only really spent any time at one club... L***s.
Any Boro, West Ham, Benfica or L***s fans around with an opinion on 'the great DD?'
Not every point, I don't think you've actually proved one point yet.
little_m 10-07-2008, 10:21 Sheerpiggo, this is getting embarrassing have the self respect to quit mate he's making you look like a total plank and to be honest i'm a little uncomfortable with it as clearly you are a bit erm, how can I put this, backwards. :hihi:
NEXT.

Sorry Earwiggo, little_m is right......this thread is getting embarrassing for all concerned, especially you :loopy:
Earwiggo 10-07-2008, 10:38 The only embarrassing thing is DD is your current legend.

So he did only score 10 a season? .....
I reckon you've not got an answer to the query 'big clubs' and DD, or to the fact which I've brought to your attention that he scored 10 goals a season.
4 in one game against QPR!, so that's how many in the other 37?
What an absolute legend!
Yes. it's very embarrassing.
And the thread is called £10m for new players....

That was only PL goals i was quoting, throughout his careerer he had a season in the old 3rd and 2nd getting approx 30 and 20 goals respectively.
Towards the end of his career he also spent time at West Ham when he got about 10 goals in their promotion season and further time back with us and Leeds.
Infact you lot tried to sign him for £3m but he turned you down to move to a bigger club.
You're getting really boring now Earwiggo.

Thanks for the boring tag, that will live with me on here forever.
DD a big success in divisions 3 and 4, 10 goals a season after that.
Trevor Francis tried to sign him apparently, and Tf subsequently proved that he couldn't run a bath.
Boring, or factual (and boring)?;)

bladebloke 10-07-2008, 15:45 Quote from 'I'm always right'.
what like waddle, gasgoine, beckham, ronaldo, rush, owen, henry, etc etc
Exactly.
Deane played for more clubs than this lot put together.... nearly.
Becham 2 big clubs, Gazza .... 3 big clubs Which Ronaldo? Rush, Chester and Liverpool, Owen 2 clubs.....
And you call me embarrassing!

(in my best shaggy impression) "it was'nt me"
NERVY-OWL 10-07-2008, 18:00 you cant really ask either set of fans who the best player is, each is going to be biased to their own players and i have hardly seen many utd players play, mainly wednesday players. only an impartial person could give a true answer. all were exellent players but to say who was better, no ones going to agree
Rocklegend 10-07-2008, 19:09 Sheridan or Hockey - HockeyComparing Hockey to Sheridan is like comparing Souness or Macmahon to Dalglish...

Blackwell is talking to Wigan about the signing of Cotterill ,Wigan are trying to recoup the £2m paid for him,but Blackwell has said talks are ongoing & Cotterill wants to come back to the Lane.

I can't understand why they would want to sign him?
I don't know which position he played for United on loan? but he's made less than 20 appearances in the top flight with Wigan who signed him for 2 MILLION from bristol in 2006 where previously he only scored 8 goals in the two years he played first team football. I believe he only scored once for Wigan.
He spit his dummy out when he wasn't picked for the Welsh squad in 2007 publicly criticising John Toshack:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/6630293.stm
How much is Blackwell prepared to pay? as I think he's done more than; as Blackwell says "lost his way" and should go to United on a free.
OK you could say he's a young player but at 20/21 he should be making an impact as an exciting prospect.
bladesufc1 14-07-2008, 15:58 he played fantastic for us, he was crossing something like 20-30 balls a game in to the box,(2nd half of the season) quality player, i'd pay the 2 million
