I've seen some strange coloured symbols and numbers on the pavements in varioius parts of the city centre. What are they?

I believe that if they're blue they're water company markings, red is electricity, green is cable and grey (not a good colour for pavements I would have thought) for telecoms.
Could be the roads or pavements are about to come up!

They seem to be all over the place

I can't say what the specific symbols and squiggles you've seen are but generally they're to mark out where something is going to be dug, or where something is for some reason.

It'll be a utility contractors marking of some sort.

they are making a digital pic of the city showing all pipes and so on
the writting next to the colour is the depth of the pipe

If they dig everywhere they've marked, there will be no pavements left at all

Never been known for their planning, or promptness, though have utility contractors.

It's a gigantic game of city-wide hopscotch?

What normally happens is:
The water company closes the pavement for a week, digs it up and re-tarmacs it.

Week after: Electricity company closes the pavement for a week, digs it up and re-tarmacs it.

Week later:BT closes the pavement for a week, digs it up and re-tarmacs it.

Are you sure they're not pedestrian speed humps and 'rumble-strips'? You been walking too fast?

The first pedestrian speed camera might not be far away...Let's tax the pedestrian!!

We've got lovely blue and yellow writing on our pavements too.

Considering the size of the office blocks and the hotel that are being/ going to be erected in that area, I assume they are plotting the layout of the utilities that are already there, and preparing to link them in.

Has anyone else noticed all those markings around town on the pavements and roads, whats going on?
I hope they are for new cycle paths, then i don't have to risk my life every time i cycle up west street.

ps, remember its The Apprentice final tonight, possibly one of the best shows ever produced!

At least then our pavements will be in the same condition as our roads;).

i dont know much about what these markings are for, ie whats going to happen, but i do know they are to do with services that are below the ground, ie water, gas ect ect

Its the Gas Board, TRANSCO or whatever, replacing a lot of old gas mains at the moment
