Jobi-Wan 06-07-2008, 09:59 PM If anyone is interested, North London Hen Rescue is again organinsing a rescue to rehome spent battery hens that are due to go slaughter.
The rescue is scheduled for the end of the month, 26th-27th July, and I have volunteered to be a collection point.
For more information and the forms which you will need to fill in to be allocated some hens please go to http://www.northlondonhenrescue.org.uk/
If anyone has any questions and wants to pop over to the yard to see how well my girls are after only being free since March then just ask.
:)
Gemima 06-07-2008, 10:38 PM That very good of you Jobi. I take my hat off to you, I really do. I only wish I had some land and could help.
If I can help in any other ways, please let me know, Good luck with the rehoming.
xxxnicolexxx 07-07-2008, 03:01 PM Ive recently bought an eglu in the hope of being able to rescue 3 ex batt's, would i have to travel to london to collect the ladies or would they be already with you?
Is this the same rescue I asked about a few weeks ago? Carla did say this month. If so will I be collecting from you? (if I am allocated any hens) :D
LitleMermaid 07-07-2008, 03:08 PM Out of curiousity, what exactly do you need to take care of a hen or two properly?
Jobi-Wan 07-07-2008, 09:46 PM Little Mermaid, have a look on the NLHR website or google the Battery Hen Welfare Trust (can't remember off hand if it's .co.uk etc), there's loads of info on there about the care an ex-batt will need in the weeks following the release. But basically a rabbit hutch and run will suffice initially and long term if adapted. The need to be kept with company so a minimum of two.
Nicole and HP, they should be with me, there's a network of people able to transport but I can't confirm I can help on that side just yet, although I will if I can. But I am able to provide a resting/ collection point.
Thanks Gemima, if you could just put the word around that would be help enough. These hens have years of egg laying left, albeit at slightly less than the 6 eggs per week commercial optimum, and make great pets.
Jobi-Wan 11-07-2008, 11:23 PM Well, there's 26 little hens coming to me on 26th July destined for new homes rather than the slaughter house. They'll have a drink and a bit to eat and a restful night in the stable before heading to their new families on the Sunday.
I'm so excited just to be able to help!!!
And there's a good possibility that 100 more hens are staying the night before heading to Manchester :D
PinkJo 15-07-2008, 09:43 AM Bump bump bump
Jobi-Wan 15-07-2008, 09:58 PM Thanks PinkJo :)
There's still time to help out a few more little ladies, just click on the link at the top and fill in the forms for Carly.
I'm so excited about the big day!! :D
I have just had my mail from Carly to confirm my hen's and have sent my donation to secure them :D the email said that there will be a collection point here in Sheffield as opposed to Doncaster? does anyone know where this will be? collecting from Sheffield would be so much better for me because I am a very bad car passenger and was dreading going all the way to Doncaster

Jobi-Wan 18-07-2008, 06:41 PM I'm the collection point at Hellaby (it was easier to say Sheffield as from experience when you mention Rotherham to anyone in the south they just look blankly at you!!! :D)
When I get the list through, hopefully on Monday, I'll ring round everyone on there and let you all know a time and the address for collection. If anyone would like to volunteer helping on the Saturday when they get to me then please let me know. As far as I know so far there is 134 hens that will be landing with me! :)
:D How many are you getting? and pics please :hihi:
I can only fit another two in, but I'll happily take piccys when they get here.
I just hope I can talk the ball and chain into taking me to hellaby (if we can find it)
littlestarshine 21-07-2008, 07:27 PM Ive put in an application :D
Jobi-Wan 21-07-2008, 10:30 PM yippee :D
I'm so excited about it, even though none will be with me permanently. just waiting to get the list now so I can call everyone and put them out of their misery and give them times for collecting :D
bobgirlsnake 22-07-2008, 01:20 PM Can anyone answer a few questions as we and the kids have been thinking about adopting ex batt's for a while
1. are the hens excessively noisy?? (although nothing can be louder then the neighbors dog at 2am)
2. I have heard to house chickens at a council property you need some sort of planning permission??
3. are the ok outside in the colder months would they need bringing in??

not really too noisy, we have one hen who can be a bit loud from time to time. but you dont hear them at all during the night.
Cant vouch for the planning premission, but I can't see why you would need it unless you are adopting 20 or 30 hens. A hen house should really be no bigger than a garden shed for a small scale flock ,if you are in doubt speak to the council.
Hens used to be wild animals many years ago, I am sure they will be fine outside in the winter, as long as you have a foxproof run and house you should be fine.
Lotti 22-07-2008, 02:37 PM Hiya bobgirlsnake.
Take a look at this - http://www.thestar.co.uk/diary/Chicken-clicking-is-cracking-way.3907466.jp
Yolande Bosman runs chicken keeping courses for those wanting more info and looking to keep them.
She's lovely and great to talk to about these things!
Yolande's details are on the bottom of the link should you wish to get in touch!
