View Full Version : New large store in Sheffield.
Sheffield Council have long stated that the city does not have big enough retail units to attract quality retails to the city.
One large(ish) unit has become available the former Fox's musical store next to Argos.
I could not believe that the latest big name attraction to Sheffield's shopping scene is the 99p Store....I give up!

Who say's the city centre isnt going up in the world!!
Going past on my way to work on the opening day, I could not believe my eyes when I saw a row of people camped out in sleeping bags! Judging by their sogginess, some had clearly been there all night.
Apparently the first 9 people into the store could purchase a DVD player for 99p.

I doubt you would be able to attract a big name retailer to that area, - it's the 'dead end' of town really. Just take stock of what there is to pull the affluent shopper down there....TJ Hughes, Primark, Argos, B&C CoOp, SY Police HQ and the Law Courts over in No Man's Land.
Don_Kiddick 17-04-2005, 10:13 If Sheffeld is betterer than Rovvrem ... :suspect: ...
Why is it becoming a retail clone? :suspect:
:D :hihi: :P :heyhey:
i was shocked that we have yet another pound land in the citycentre....... i guess i shouldnt have been tho. i went in the day it was opened as it is right next to my bus stop and gotta say i couldnt find anything decent.
Carborundum 17-04-2005, 11:03 SO is Sheffield now officially called Pound City ?
I thought to myself the same thing. Sheffield, I give up with you......
We have those in the us, dollar stores they call them, i think there great, i've had some good buys from them on small items, in fact we have them all over the country now but not usualy in a town center.
When i walked past they had a huge display of pop corn in the window,i actually wanted to go in and buy some but i just could'nt bring myself to go in.
FairyNormal 17-04-2005, 16:29 Hey don't knock it!! We popped in yesterday as we passed it on our way to the bus stop. Where else can you get a box of Green and Blacks's Hazelnut Twists for 99p?!! :wow:
dragonsoup 17-04-2005, 16:48 Do you lot only think about shops and bars? What normal person judges a place by these standards. Pi.. off to Leeds or Manchester or better yet lovely London if you dont like Sheffield.
when I was a kid they had decent stores, then there were the £1 shops, now this.
what next? 89p stores?:suspect:
and how many 1p's must they have?

Another poundland? This place has a 1p edge over it's more expensive rivals  It's next to my bus stop and it has been busy since it opened.
royjames 17-04-2005, 18:49 Stop being such bloody snobs will you,its another store for those who want to get a bargain.

I do, and thats the problem, so do lots of other people who could be spending their money in Sheffield. If you get the train back from London on Saturday night is full of people who have been to London shopping, so it the train from Leeds and Manchester.
We need better (yes, more expensive but also more unique) shops in town to keep locals here spending and even (god forbid) attract people from outside of Sheffield into the city.
The only reason to go into town at the moment is to buy a mobile phone of 100 pegs for £1.

and like nick2 said... we already do go to London but wouldnt it be better if the money was coming into sheff?

That would be a great bit of electioneering if you were standing Roy:D
seriously, I have no problem with cheap stores (every city has them). Its the fact we don't have quality ones as well.
Since I started school people have always gone to Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham shopping. Even Barnsley has posher shops than us;)
