lolliew 05-07-2008, 02:13 PM Help
my neighbours dog barks all day and into the night. It is driving me completey bonkers.
If i step outside it barks, if i sit in the garden it barks, i open the door it barks (starting to see a patten here). The fence seperating the 2 properties is solid so it cant see me or the kids when we go out.
Its owners are just on the right side of the law with food and water and shelter - although they never give it any attention and it stays in a cage all day. And they shovel out its mess just once a week (we have to close all doors and windows during that).
It looks like a great big huskie type - and it looks quite evil. It has in the past broke out of its cage and mauled another neighbours dog - but it got away with it (or they did).
I have tried the council, better neighbourhood people, environmental health, i have even reported them to the RSPCA, who in all fairness, came out to see them and warned them about caring for the dog (which now means it gets daily water and food) and have made a follow up visit.
They know they tee off the neighbours with it but they just dont care.
Has anyone got any advice to try to shut it up?
(thanks for reading my moan)

there are many reasons for a dog barking.
it might not be able to see you, lollie, but it will certainly be able to hear you on your garden and moving around. It may be that it's teritorial, and think that you are in the prodess of "invading" its territory. (think how many dogs react to piostmen etc?)
It may have separation anxiety.
it might just be that it''s a pup, and/or new to the home (although from reading your comments these seem the least likely explanations) and going through a bewildered-and-I-need-to-get-used-to-my-new-home- phase.
I'm currently feeling a bit "antsy" and uneasy as the pup I took on in a rescue, the other week, is anxious, and yapping a lot. I am very concerned about her disturbing the neighbours, as it's the last thing I want them to put up with.
Fortunately, at the mo, they are being understanding, and they know I am a) doing my best to keep her quiet, and b) actually "doing" something about setling her in, so she is not "showing off".
She is going to have to get out of that mode, and stop barking. but it'll take time for her to acclimatise to living here.
I know it can't be easy for you having to cope with the noise and hassle.
lolliew 05-07-2008, 03:23 PM I have thought that it is being terratorial etc - and i do have a dog myself so on a good day i do think it is being protective etc but when it is non stop i sometimes wonder about natonstan' s advice :hihi:
It is fully grown and very dirty (never seen them bathe it but i am not here 24/7) it looks like it should run wild in some sort of natural park (thousands of miles away please).
One of its owners was out today whilst it was going potty trying to get out of its fence and he just ignored it. When i shouted for it to shut up it did - so seperation anxiety could be a problem - however it barks in vain as they have no intention of spending time with it.
DancingDave 15-08-2008, 01:45 PM I have a similar although not so serious issue. Next door acquired a little dog a few months ago, but they keep the damn thing outside almost all the time from morning till night, they never seem to take it for a walk or let it in the house until 10 or 11 at night. The inevitable consequence is that the dog yaps and barks all the time at the slightest noise. It is going to be a serious issue soon as we have a baby on the way.
Plus they also have 2 cats that they have now banished outdoors in all weathers, so they are always in my garden.
Would the RSPCA be interested in this ? is there anything else that can be done ? It seems like cruelty to me, not to mention the nuisance.
Lotti 15-08-2008, 01:59 PM DancingDave if the dog has shelter and water there is nothing the RSPCA can do as far as I know.
Personally I think the circumstances described by you and lolliew are atrocious and I really wish people would begin to take these cases seriously :( Not only do I feel for you as neighbours I also feel for the poor dogs.
My dog barks but I'm working on it and she spends most of the day inside if I can't be out with her to distract her from people passing the gates. I hate thinking it may be distracting for the neighbours but sadly in order to get her out of barking for attention I have to ignore her until she goes quiet (thankfully not too long)!
DancingDave 15-08-2008, 02:40 PM Well it doesn't have shelter, there is no kennel for it, it is loose in the yard, I don't even think there is water for it, all I've seen it doing is dragging its turds around.
Lotti 15-08-2008, 03:22 PM I'd contact them then - they would first come and talk to the owners and make a follow up visit to see if things have improved. Unless, of course things were so bad there was cause to take the dog immediately.
Moonbird 15-08-2008, 03:22 PM It will be bored and lonely and probably feel that it needs to protect itself and its area, dogs are pack animals and don't like to be alone for long periods of time, it makes them feel lonely and insecure.
Obviously the owners of the dog alone hold the answer to that problem, I can never understand why people get dogs just to leave them outside alone all of the time, I am afraid that I think it's cruel and I would take some persuading otherwise....I think a dog can cope with being kennelled for a few hours in the day but not as a permanent thing alone they are just not that type of animal.
DancingDave 16-08-2008, 11:55 PM Yes it is a very sad state of affairs for everyone concerned, and I do like dogs as a rule, the neighbours on the other side have one but I honestly never hear a peep out of him, they are obviously looking after theirs properly and don't leave it outside ever.

so they can boast in the pub that 'we've got one of those... it's got six champions in it's thingy/pedigree' or to 'guard' the back yard from anybody who might be thinking of getting a neb at their cinema sized telly? :suspect:
