View Full Version : Programme 'Jews'...on BBC4...did anyone see it?
catzeyesF 05-07-2008, 11:24 Hi all.
Did anyone watch the Jews program on bbc4? First one was about a Jewish man coming out of jail and how his local community helped him back on his feet.
Second episode was about the holocaust and the refugees. The third was about Faith family and how they wanted jewish people to keep their heritage...
I found all these episodes great and it was really nice to see how Jewish people live and practise their religion. I have always been fasinated with Judiasm but have found it hard to grasp.
Did anyone watch it? What did you think?

Anyone help me with one thing, milk and kosher issue? Didnt understand that part?
cgksheff 05-07-2008, 11:50 Why not google milk kosher ?
I didn't see it, but I wish I had now! Some documentaries by the BBC are excellent. I have to say that I don't understand everything about Judaism, but just the basics.
I found one or two links quite useful. It was actually recommended by one or two users from past religious discussions, believe or not. :hihi:

Yesterday was 4th July, and we had bagels in our office as part of the celebration, and I did wonder about why there is a hole in the bagel. :) It did occur to me to think whether donuts are derived from bagels. :hihi:

In the Jewish faith foods are divided into Kosher, Parve and Traife. ("clean", "neutral" and "dirty", to take it to the simplest level), just as in Islam things can be described as "halal" (permitted, clean) and Haram (forbidden, unclean).
Part of the jewish law on Kashrut (kosher) is that you cannot serve dairy (milk etc) and meat in the same meal.
Many Jews who keep a Kosher kitchen and follow the dietary laws, even have seperate fridges, sinks, crockery, and pans, etc, for preparing and serving up milk and meat.
Amyvictoria 05-07-2008, 17:00 I saw these documentaries and really enjoyed them. They showed three quite different aspects of modern Jewish life.
In the one about the children of survivors of the Holocaust one women said that it was surprising that something so long ago was still casting a shadow but then why wouldn’t something that huge not do (I’m paraphrasing). This really resounded with me. There were several adults on that program that had never even known that one or both of their parents were Jewish. Their parents had hidden it from the world, not because they were ashamed to be Jewish but because they felt that being Jewish was a dangerous thing to be.
This ties in to my own situation as my grandfather was brought up Orthodox. He married out but he and my grandmother were deciding if she should convert and their children be brought up Jewish and a friend said to them that the holocaust will happen again and they should keep their children out of it if they didn’t have to be involved. In other words, it was safer for their children not to be Jewish, if they didn’t have to be. My family did not even loose any know relatives in the holocaust. But it still cast it’s shadow.
The affects are still being felt in my generation, the grandchildren, who identify partially as Jewish but do not have the language (Yiddish or Hebrew) or the knowledge (religious or cultural) to participate in anyway in the community. As a child I was aware of my grandfather Jewishness but we were discouraged from disclosing it to anybody – because it wasn’t safe to do so.
The third program about the man who support organisations to promote religious observance amongst Jewish families. He seemed to think that marrying out and assimilating was the worst thing that could happen. While this is obviously a worthy cause I couldn’t help feeling a bit cross at him.
There are many, many, “Partially Jewish” people around but no Jewish out reach programs for them. It’s as if because the parents or grand parents took the decision to marry out the next generations are tarnished.
It is a difficult subject with no easy answers. I’ve found this website really interesting.

Hm.. that is really interesting about not combining meat and milk, because I have come to realise that nutritionally, it floats the body up a lot, and you don't absorb the nutrient as efficiently. I think this is the theory behind "the Hays diet" or something like that.
I find that a lot of scientific theories in modern day are based on some form of tradition or religious background. It's kinda interesting really.
catzeyesF 05-07-2008, 21:42 Bago - You can watch that last episode on I player. I really think if you have a chance watch it. I hope theres another one :)
