View Full Version : Sheffield - City on the move.
I remember the council had a motto for Sheffield a few years back which was something like: 'Sheffield - City on the move'.
Does anyone have any idea what the current 'motto' is? or even more interestingly - if you had to think of one, what would it be??:)

I recall something like this in the public information films of the 70's, such as the one at the start of The Full Monty.
The library still has an archive of them and shows them on the odd occasion!

redrobbo 16-04-2005, 19:33 Sheffield - city of trees. Short, simple, descriptive.
I'm not so keen on these promotional slogans, as they get used to describe some of the daftest things. The village of Tibshelf in Derbyshire proudly proclaims "Tibshelf - the site of England's first inland oilwell". Ouch!

So..."Sheffield - Site of the world's first overshot, double relay, ferrous bucketed, direct drive water powered tilt hammer." wouldn't do it for you then redrobbo?
It's got a ring to it though.:)

I should'nt put our city down too much. I love the place & could'nt imagine living anyhere else, but I look around the place and think "yeah, it'll be great when it's finished." Then something else gets bulldozed or dug up. I also feel sad when great shops in the city centre close down because they can't afford to stay in business, Gemsoft being a recent example, and another bargain basement opens up.

I recognise the value some people find from having Gemsoft, but I found them arrogant and far too expensive. More than once I have made a trip into town to purchase something they had in stock right now, and even check they had it while I was on the phone, only to be told they don't have it in stock, when I'm stood in the shop.
I agree with you about the problem of too many cheap shops in town, but until the place is redeveloped (very soon now) you cannot expect decent retail outlets to invest and relocate there. Opposite the peace gardens on pinstone street is a decent parade of shops, and also in Orchard square, those places are finished, attractive and modern.

Sheffield 'it could be worse'
How about Sheffield: a city for the blind
I really dislike the whole 'city on the move' rubbish; not only is it seethrough and ambitious at the time, it dates really badly when you realise that sheffield was only moving in one direction from the mid 70's onwards. I think if you must have a slogan, it should say something particular about your city, rather than be aspirational and anonymous;
Sheffield: green, friendly, different.

Reminds me of a guy i got talking to in spain last year. He had a tattoo on his arm that said " Fear nowt ". I asked him if he was from yorkshire because of his tat. It tuned out he wasn`t. He wanted Fear nothing on his arm but the artist couldn`t fit it on so he put " Nowt " instead. Made me chuckle. Said he was going to have it covered. Think he was from blackburn.
It has to be

Yes I'd go for that one as well. like it:thumbsup:

??? Appro for the 70s maybe but steel died a long time ago as far as Sheffield is concerned in the full sense of the term you mean...its like saying Stoke is still producing the best pottery in the world.....
SHeffield at the moment is synonymous wuith the Arctic Monkeys so perhaps a slogan encompassing their brand or trademark.....
SHEFFIELD....City of the Monkees.....
maybe they will last longer than the steel industry!!!!!
Pseudonym 13-02-2006, 04:19 Sheffield - City on the move...

espadrille 26-10-2008, 05:14 Just found this old thread and I do really believe that we are really now on the move.I attended a cabinet meeting this week and it was great to be able to have access to the documents that are now being approved by the leaders to take us forward in to the next few years. I do believe that devolving power to the local communities is the way to go and that we as residents will then be able to make choices for what we want for our area in the way of services, organisations , shops etc etc.
The diversity of the City is a strong point and the development of the creative industries and the sports facilities like to complex at Meadowhead will bring more business and more talent to the city.Capita are still committed to Sheffield as they appreciate how many graduates stay behind to make their lives here as they realise how good it is to be here as opposed to places they came from.
I just think that we need to work on improving provision for support in some areas but I know that this is not just a local issue but a national one.
If I had to have some wild guesses, some of the guesses would be :-
1] That you work for Sheffield Publicity Dept............or.....
2] You 've never set foot outside Sheffield, ever..........or.......
3] You 've been injected by a powerful drug, developed by Sheffield City Council, called,
' Eebygum Oxide ' and you have accidently overdosed.............or......
4] You are from Leeds or Manchester.....or Wigan ?.......and this is all just irony.

I just see things going on around me.Maybe you shoul wake up to it aswell.
espadrille 27-10-2008, 05:59 Three and a half years later, yet still strangely appropriate.
Or Sheffield....Bucking the trends.Sheffield retains a big population of its student graduates.Capita is expending its base here as it appreciates what Sheffield has to offer with its skills base.
If you look at other cities who do not have the student retention that we do, the students will migrate to other parts where they prefer to live.If we keep students here after they graduate and they bring up families here, there is more chance that big companies like Capita will invest in Sheffield .
I recently attended an event at the millenium galleries for awarding women in business and I was astounded at the numbers of women entrepreneurs that have successfully set up and are running businesses in Sheffield. There is support for women now( and men) so we can no longer have excuses for not achieving our true potential.
