View Full Version : What's the best ever comeback you have ever witnessed?
CorkerSWFC 04-07-2008, 19:50 What with Turkeys antics in the Euros and seemingly more and more comebacks occurring these days, what is your biggest memory of that fatefull or dramatic day you found your team or one you supported get pulled back in extraordinary style?
Ive had a look round and this one takes some beating.......
Tranmere’s 2001 FA Cup run produced one of the greatest comebacks in the competition’s rich history. Trailing Southampton 3-0 at half time, and having been comprehensively outplayed, Tranmere came out for the second half transformed. With Prenton Park a cauldron of noise, they ripped Southampton's defence to shreds with relentless attacks. A hat trick by striker Paul Rideout brought the scores level before Stuart Barlow hit the winner. Then-Southampton boss Glenn Hoddle later described the defeat as his worst moment in football
barnie41 04-07-2008, 20:01 Play off semi final - Blades v Forest. THE most nerve wracking, 90 minutes of madnes I've ever seen at the 'Lane.
Pity the final didn't live up to that.
blade4ever 04-07-2008, 20:04 the blades in the second leg play off semi final against nottingham forrest at bramall lane a few years ago. we were trailing 2-0 and came back to win 4-3. what a game.

you just beat me to it
Firemansam 04-07-2008, 20:16 I remember The Blades coming back from either 3-1 or 4-1 down to beat Brighton 5-4....it was better than the Forest semi for excitement. Be nice if any Blades could remind me how the scoring went.
CorkerSWFC 04-07-2008, 20:19 If im honest one of the most guttering for me was last season when we were 2-0 up at the lane, talk about a chance to end the hoodoo lol!!

That was the 89/90 season, we were 3-1 up, Brighton came back to make it 4-3 and we scored two late goals to make it 5-4 to the Blades.
Beating Leeds 2-1 with two last minute goals was a good en but i think the Second Leg of the Play Off Final v Forest takes some beating.

We were actually 3-0 up, after about fifteen minutes ... that was a hair-raising game.
So, technically, the best comeback I've ever watched in the flesh, was Brighton coming from three down to lead 4-3...

I'll have to watch 'Harrys Game' to jog my memory. :hihi:
I know John Francis got the winner.
CorkerSWFC 04-07-2008, 21:25 is there a good website where you can watch old matches and even last seasons highlights any1?

Aye ... 4-3 down with about five minutes to go when Deane gets the easiest chance of the whole game, and misses it :gag:
We all knew then it wasn't going to be our day .. how wrong we were :D A late, late penalty saves a point .. then an even later winner sent everyone crazy.

The top one I remember clearly. Great day on the kop.
The Leeds one is my all time favourite. I strangely can't rem the Forest game :loopy::confused:
I do however remember when Leeds once were 2-0 down at the lane, and they scored twice in the dying minutes :gag: (I was on the John St Terrace, so I'd guess my early teens) 87 ish

john francis diving header at the kop end. i was stood right behind the goal.
forest took the whole familly and my mrs actually smiled.
also last season wendy at home. not the best come back i know (we should never have been behind) but i was sat above them and to see the look on theire faces when they realised they'd just chucked away the best chance of a derby double since god was a lad was priceless.

I guess we can't blame you, it was the highlight of the derby games this season for you. The ass kicking at Hillsborough can't have been nice to watch.
freyasdad 05-07-2008, 11:10 The forest game, what a match.
bladebloke 05-07-2008, 15:50 The ass kicking at Hillsborough can't have been nice to watch.
no it was'nt pal. but seeing as the title of the thread was biggest come backs i did'nt feel the need to metion it. but realise you have to at every opportunity
as you never know when the next ones coming.:)
any way to keep topic going the comeback against wendy has to be up there with the best. as it keeps our 80 or is it 90 odd year run since a derby double defeat in tact. and also made sure no wendy under 45 has seen a wendy competetive victory at beautiful down town bramall lane.
Stockers 05-07-2008, 19:25 The forest game, what a match.
Someone posted extended highlights of it on youtube, seeming Des Walker blubbering at the end is great.
CorkerSWFC 05-07-2008, 19:41 I doubt it beats Alan Quinns tears at the end of the Wigan match though talk about what goes around comes around .
I can remeber United playing Brighton a few years back and both teams made a comeback in the same match. United went 2-0 up were losing 4-3 with about 5 minutes to go and won it 5-4
Think Chelsea at Hillsboro in cup semi when we were 3-0 up at half time and booking our seats for Wembley, then a cetain winger came on Canoville I think his name was and we froze when he ran at us,they went 4-3 up and only a last min penalty got us a replay.
Been a great season for Blunts when all they can talk about is a 2-2 draw with us a BSHBL

Stop been to bitter Corker.
CorkerSWFC 05-07-2008, 20:15 Just giving n taking lol

Did you know that the last time United beat Wednesday out of a major cup competition was 1928.
This includes 3 League cup games and 4 FA Cup games including the biggest 'derby' game there will ever be, at Wembley stadium.

Yeah, what a sickener.
Not as bad as getting a lesson from your rivals in the biggest derby game there will ever be at Wembley stadium but it was a sickener.

Andy Linighans last second of extra time goal (or should that be Whoopsy Woods' o.g.) went some way to healing the pain.
Seeing a half empty Wembley of blubbering Wednesday fans even allowed me to break a smile for the first time in a couple of months.
CorkerSWFC 06-07-2008, 08:42 Wolves at the millenium must have been a hard one to take, 46 games to get where you did, then to come up with a pathetic performance like that.
Time is a great healer.
I have the Semi-Final on DVD though.
I know what you mean though, Uniteds disasters in big games (play-offs, semi's) are great memories. I really thought United would turn Wolves over in the play-offs and was expecting the worse. But 0-3 down before half-time and the lager was out.
Good times. By the way, the trek home from Cardiff is horrendous when you win so I sympathise with Blades fans for having to do it after a hammering.

Great season and many great memories, shame it all went wrong at the last minute.
Still without that we wouldn't have had the 2005/06 season which involved automatic promotion and a Sheffield Double - now thats what i call happy days!!
CorkerSWFC 06-07-2008, 08:48 Are you going to do it this season then u blades, its a tough tough league this season, we all know what Reading did last time they were in the championship.

We're ready this time and we have a great manager............we'll **** it!! :hihi:
£20 says we finish above Wednesday.
CorkerSWFC 06-07-2008, 08:54 I,ll hold my bet till i see if we can sign a couple more faces otherwise i,'' have to agree with you.
Like i said theres a lot of decent prospects in the championship this season.
We won't get nowhere near the play offs unless we sign a couple of heads, and if im honest i think if you got a couple of injurys you could struggle to sustain a proper challenge this season.

I hope to see the back of Brian Laws when the takeover goes through but I wouldn't swap him for Blackwell.

Think it says something when all you have to spout about is the other teams defeats. At least we were there for the final.

Ahh, repetition AND originality (is that spelt right?). You truly are blessed with great wit, litt...[yawn]
Wednesday coming back from 4-2 down to beat Man Utd 5-4 in 1968 - Man Utd were European champions with the likes of Best, Law and Charlton at their peak.
Wednesday coming back from 2-1 down to win 3-2 against Man U in our first season back in the top division. A big poke in the eye for them once again since we'd beaten them in League Cup final the previous season at Wembley. :D
Happy days.....where HAVE they gone. :(
CorkerSWFC 08-07-2008, 08:18 Happy days.....where HAVE they gone.
