USB1.1, known generally as USB, was the first popular standard for the Universal Serial Bus. It is intended to take the pain out of adding peripheral devices to a computer. Maximum data throughput: 1.5MB per second.

USB2.0 is the latest Universal Serial Bus standard (official launch: November 2001). With a maximum throughput of 60MB per second USB2.0 is 40 times faster than USB1.1.

Don't get fleeced by the cost of a USB cable. You should be paying no more than £4-£5.

The cables and plugs/sockets are the same, its the hardware on the end of them thats differnet. USB 1 devices will work in a USB2 port, and USB2 stuff will work at a slower speed than its capable of in a USB1 port.

A USB1.1 and a USB2.0 cable are both the same cable! The speed difference is in the PC USB and the peripheral and NOT the cable. So just buy the cheapest cable (95p from Screw Fix)

So why are they sold as USB and USB2 cables?

So they can make more money :suspect:

It's a bit like when CD's came out and everybody was selling 'Digital' headphones. There just the same as analog ones.

Sometimes!

USB1.1 devices are meant to work in USB2.0 ports, and usually do.
USB2.0 devices aren't meant to work in USB1.1 ports, but often do.
